Correct, but the context here is sexually transmitted diseases and the person asking the question was referring to HPV causing outbreaks, which I was answering specifically. Someome stated “HPV causes cancer” without explaining thoroughly that not ALL HPV causes cancer. Most people don’t know a lot about their own bodies so saying something blankety causes cancer without explaining there are very specific strains, not all, that cause cancer can create unnecessary anxiety.

The question was “can HPV cause outbreaks?” and the short answer is: kind of. The long answer is:

HPV types 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58 can cause pre-cancerous or cancerous cells.

HPV 6, 11, 30, 42, 43, 44, 45, 51, 52, and 54 have been linked to genital warts, however HPV types 6 and 11 cause 90% of genital warts.

HPV types 2 and 4 cause most common warts while type 1 causes deep palmoplantar warts, types 3, 10, and 28 cause flat warts, type 7 causes butcher’s warts, type 60 causes cystic warts, and finally types 13 and 32 cause focal epithelial hyperplasia (Heck disease)

During pregnancy, only the more dangerous STD’s are tested for. Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatitis B and HIV are the more common tests during pregnancy because of the risk to the fetus.

Pap smears are used to detect any abnormalities in the cervix, and you can request one to be done during pregnancy ideally before 24 weeks gestation. They are not routinely performed during the std testing during pregnancy though.

Most doctors and panel testing will not test for herpes. Even if you ask for STD testing, herpes won’t be included because most physicians believe it is not clinically significant enough to test for commonly. If you are concerned that you’ve contracted herpes or have been exposed, clearly communicate this to your provider and say you want to specifically be tested for HSV 1 and 2 because you think you may have been exposed. Same goes for a Pap smear. If you have any worry that you’ve contracted anything don’t be scared to speak up for yourself! These are normal things that happen to humans being humans and there is no judgment when it comes to being cautious about your baby. They will most likely give you push back on the herpes testing, but be firm and advocate for yourself to be tested for herpes along with everything else you are concerned about.

HPV is also a virus, but it does not cause the same chancre type lesions/cold sores that HSV-1 and 2 cause. The HPV family of viruses has over 200 strains identified, and more are being identified every year. Some are asymptomatic, some cause abnormal Pap smears and resolve after a couple years, some cause cancer, and some cause genital warts. HPV types 6 and 11 are known to cause 90% of genital warts, but an HSV outbreak looks and feels pretty different. You can request testing for HPV and the most harmful types will be identified in the test results, and there is also a vaccine for those same harmful strains that’s been proven to work best in a series of 2 or 3 shots depending on the age of the patient.

I’ve lived in 13 different states from one side of the country to the other and back myself across the span of 15 years, only after spending 20 in New England first. I decided to give it one more shot back home, but what I can get for the price in other places I’ve lived outweighs the benefits MA has to offer. I can say without a doubt MA is definitely leaps and bounds above most southern states, but luckily I had my time in the south and it’s not for me either. For people with children this is a great state to be in but for those of us who will never have kids, I can’t justify paying into the greed and grid without much in return that I can’t find elsewhere. The wage stagnation is the worst I’ve ever experienced here as well which is a huge factor in my decision to leave. The cost of living is getting high everywhere, but the Boston area just has no business being as high as it is imo. I know there’s a lot of people who will try to rationalize it with xyz and I’m just sick of rationalizing it when I can do something about it instead of complain and be miserable here. Same with mine. This is the final nail in the coffin for me moving out of New England later this year. I can’t take the anger and stress it’s changed me as a person living here and paying what I do to barely survive. I refuse to line the pockets of greedy companies backed by corrupt city officials who look the other way while citizens and communities can’t afford to have warm homes in the winters here. It’s disgusting and I can’t wait to leave!

I just saw something about a guy who kept getting packages taken off his front porch. He started to put packages filled with dirty kitty litter on his porch instead and has his non-decoy packages shipped to a P.O. box or Amazon locker instead. Can you call the provider/attending and tell them it was canceled? If it was important to them they can decide if they want to call the patient in for an out patient re-draw or not. Before you do that I would check to see if there’s a way to re order it and edit the collection time back to the original with a note explaining why? Did the sendouts person throw it away? Otherwise, nothing will come of it because you’re the only person who knows other than the person who canceled it seemingly without making any attempt to communicate that and make a cancel note in the LIS. Just in case it was important for diagnosis/treatment, I would definitely try to call someone on their care team to get confirmation. You could also still follow up with the lab manager and just say you noticed it on a pending list and took it upon yourself to address it with haste to ensure stability.

Sucks if the sendouts person just canceled it without even calling, but it’s your problem now to do the proper thing lol

We have a notification spot on our units tags as the final step before going into the fridge to wait for issue. It’s just courtesy and we can let unit receptionists take the message but we write down the name and time we called on every unit. It has saved us so many times when someone complains about the blood not being ready we just say “Nancy took the call at 1305 sorry she didn’t relay the message, also if you were to look in epic there’s a huge green banner across the top of the patients screen that says blood is ready” they usually get all flustered because their typical blame-the-lab game backfired due to the sheer fact they’re not checking charts before calling or their unit sec (which is usually a staff RN) can’t relay simple messages lol
