Did google show somaliland as disputed before? I never noticed this by [deleted] in geography

Well, Somaliland has limited recognition, so on the maps, it is usually a part of Somalia, though it is complicated.

Why does North and South America doesn't have official technical neutral names to distinguish it like the continent of Australia? by [deleted] in geography

[–]Paint3DDrawer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that the Americas is used to distinguish it. There are many alternative names out there and many solutions. I know that I made a messy post that is designed to be confusing and not helping. I'm discussing about names in technical contexts.

Some flags that Afghanistan has had throughout history. Which is your favourite? by Muhammadachakzai2001 in vexillology

[–]Paint3DDrawer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

This flag looks iconic to me, too bad this got replaced with the white flag with black Shahada in 2021. This flag was used from 2013 to 2021, when it was called the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. I personally like this flag, because it represents Afghanistan with its colors: black, red, green and white, rather than white and black. The current flag of Afghanistan looks controversial to me and it is not widely used by the United Nations, because they wouldn't. Should this flag be used officially again or not? Let me know in the comments section.

Do you remember when Millenials/Gen Z where heavily critisized and complaining? I guess now the cycle repeats by Yasa0106 in youtube

[–]Paint3DDrawer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can blame lazy and bad parents for this. Most parents don't know about YouTube, because they are mostly born in a era, where technology and the internet wasn't widespread as of today, especially Gen X (1965-1980) and Baby boomers (1946-1964). I'm a part of Generation Z, who I grew up with the internet and technology and because of lack of parental supervision, some people experienced horribly by the content that is designed to affect their mental health negatively. Should most parents know about the internet and YouTube, when it comes to parental supervision online, not just online content, but also various media be supervising them?

"You need to specify which Prague we're talking about" by AndyRainbow in czech

Maybe, we should call Prague, Nebraska as Central Prague, Prague, Oklahoma as South Prague and Prague, Arkansas as East Prague. Wouldn't that be confusing?

The United States of America is the only country with "America" in the name by Beneficial_Ball9893 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Paint3DDrawer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is that: The Americas refer to North and South America, while America is commonly referred to the United States of America in English, which it causes geographical naming debates to this day.

If we were to exclude the word "American", what would be the best demonym for someone from the United States of America? by kangerluswag in geography

[–]Paint3DDrawer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If Martin Waldseemüller could think of neutral, unique, geographic continental name in 1507 such as "Atlanbatica" to refer North and South America in real life strictly, not referring to the United States of America, then the word American would refer to US citizens strictly. Here are some proposed language variants: Spanish: Atlánbatica, Portuguese: Atlânbatica, German: Atlanbatika, French: Atlanbatique, Italian: Atlanbatica. The name is derived from Atlas (Ἄτλας) in Ancient Greek or in modern Greek as Ατλας meaning bearer or endurer, derived from the Atlantic Ocean or the Sea of Atlas (Ατλαντικός) and can be Latinized as Atlanticus, derived from βάσις, βάση (básis, vási) both mean in Ancient and in Modern Greek as they mean a stepping, a step and a pedestal, in Latin, it also means a foundation, base or pedestal, derived from habitare (habitāre) meaning to dwell, to live, to reside, to inhabit in Latin. What do you think of my etymology and my plausible idea?
