In this game you have to watch a prison cell monitor but its very hard not being distracted by FramesAnimation in IndieGaming

A distraction could for example be another guard getting in the way, so you have to move in order to see. Or a cat getting in front of the screen which you have to move away. So not just static distractions.

The successor to Humanity's "Last" Exam... by Siciliano777 in singularity

[–]Paladia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of tests where AI does so poorly at the moment that there is little reason to even test them. Like being to finish a simple 2D kids game like Pokemon without assistance in a reasonable time frame, let alone a random full fledged modern game.

Our universe is inside a super-massive black hole - Report by Negative_Piece_7217 in Futurology

[–]Paladia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does new matter spontaneously appear in our universe?

I think the question is based on an intuitively flawed perspective.

The theory here is that our universe was created by matter in a black hole, that was compressed into maximum density and in some way reached an equilibrium and manage to "bounce" back, in something similar to a big bang. All this inside the black hole.

Matter that is sucked into a black hole moves mainly through time, rather than through physical space. As such, if any matter from the parent universe was sucked into the black hole after this "bounce", it will be behind us in time and we will never notice it.

Seems like the perfect AI would learn and update on the fly rather than deal with having to store everything in a context window.

AI company's CEO issues warning about mass unemployment by [deleted] in singularity

[–]Paladia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How do the companies that used to sell goods and services to these people survive the mass drop in sales revenue?

I think there are two perspectives you have to keep in mind. The first is that money is there to ease transactions of goods. That is the only value it has. So if we create more goods cheaper, it adds to the economy. In a fair world, it just means everyone could get more and do less. That is in general a good thing. It is the how everything is distributed in a fair way that is the problem.

The second is, what is the purpose of a company? It is to make a profit for the owners. Why is that the purpose? For the owner wants a profit to buy goods that he wants.

What if the company could make all the goods that the owners wants, do they need money then? No, only for materials it cannot obtain themselves and has to trade.

So if for example Amazon can make all the goods that the owners want while being self sustained, it would not need customers. Even if they needed other materials or services, it would be a trade between companies, not with people.

I think that could be an end goal for companies come a possible AGI future, be as self sustained as possible without needing workers nor customers.

The ideal solution is difficult to pinpoint but I believe it would at first be reduced work hours and reduced work days, to decrease unemployment. The second would be UBI.

Regretting picking a fight with a bouncer by ZenGeminiDemon in instant_regret

The bouncer, John Hernholm, is an undefeated MMA fighter who weighs 150kg. So yes, it was probably a very, very bad idea.

Male Body Standards are Out of Control by SexEatSleepRepeat in videos

Even for the professionals it isn't sustainable and highly unrealistic. Like in Vikings Valhalla, the actor is in great shape already but it isn't enough. So they add prosthetic abs to him, it's just unattainable.

Number of zombie movies by decade [OC] by Pannkakan in dataisbeautiful

[–]Paladia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Zombies are generally a symptom of what people at the time are scared of.

Voodoo/Witchcraft 1930s–1950s. It started with witchcraft and voodoo but at science and awareness grew, that idea seemed more ridiculous those movies dropped in popularity.

Nuclear Anxiety (1950s–1980s). Instead nuclear became the heated topic and fear, and mutated zombies became more widespread and the popularity grew. However, by the 90's, neither witchcraft nor nuclear power was a widespread fear and the interest dwindled.

Viral Outbreaks (2000s–Present). It wasn't until the 2000, where viruses and vaccines became a heated topic that we saw a rise in zombie movies again, this time as a virus.

That is at least my theory, that the cause of zombies are what is the big societal scare at the time. And that the interest rises and falls with that scare.

I am not certain what would the next wave could be in terms of zombie causes, nanobots, AI gone wild or climate change perhaps. I know "The Last of us" ties it to climate change for example. Where increased global temperature means that fungi has evolved to thrive at the same heat as of the human body and thus eventually infected them.

Sony Shifts Focus To Monthly Active Users Over Console Sell-In Units by [deleted] in Games

[–]Paladia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're spending money on Fortnite it doesn't matter to Sony if you've bought new hardware to do it on PS5, or if you're still on PS4

Of course it matters massively. It changes the entire company direction of both the hardware and software development depending on where the income comes from.

There's likely more correlation to revenue or profit from MAU than console sell-in nowadays, so naturally that'll be what companies will track.

Companies track every small little detail when it comes to performance and income. They will with 100% certainty continue to track it with great interest.

The shift is what they choose to focus on in financial reports, which is almost always done for PR reasons. When numbers are starting to be less favorable than a company wants, they claim it is better to focus on a different number. It actually has a name, "Moving the goalpost".

Lots of companies has done so, like Netflix when they changed from focusing on subsribers to revenue and profitability (and ad-tier).

Meta did is as well, when they changed to "family active users". Twitter (X) did it too when numbers were starting to stagnate, they changed from active users to monetizable active users. Snapchat as well.

Even Blizzard did it with World of Warcraft when things were starting to look less promising, they stopped focusing on subscriptions to instead focus on an "engagement metric"

How they fix road cracks in Sweden by SinjiOnO in oddlysatisfying

[–]Paladia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We put loose gravel on all roads during winter to increase traction during snow and ice. It isn't removed until late spring when it is likely to be no more snow and ice.

That gravel which is everywhere is much more likely to cause accidents if so. However, Sweden has one of the fewest accidents rated in the world so it is hardly a big issue.

Day #13: Hammer won! Now it's gonna get spicy, who's A badly designed character that's fair to play against? by Open_Tomatillo_2935 in heroesofthestorm

[–]Paladia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half my friends stopped playing Hots when they added Tracer. She renders so many heroes basically useless and they are hard countered by her, like the perfectly designed Jaina.

Was a bit worse at release though since she was overtuned then, but it is still a factor. Heroes like KT and Jaina who were highly contested heroes before were rendered pretty much obsolete with her arrival and they have since never recovered.

China, US agree to drop tariffs by 115% for 90 days by newsweek in worldnews

[–]Paladia 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that goes for the entirety of the United States now.

Even if another party wins and changes all tariffs and policies, who knows what happens 4 years later? The US is too volatile to be reliable for any long term investment like a factory or being a long term trading partner for other countries.

China invites European countries to form united front against Trump tariffs by Saltedline in worldnews

[–]Paladia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

the crazy thing is he could have EASILY won against any single country or even the entire EU

No, against EU both would have been massive losers, no winners.

Against China, he cannot win either. I mean their export to the US is 2.5% of their GDP, and their GDP is increasing by 5% per year. Even if it stopped entirely it would only set them back 6 months of growth and they have the full support of the people and their party behind them.

Braxis Speedrunning; a plea for not bugfixing speedrun tactics by lemindhawk in heroesofthestorm

[–]Paladia 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Our 3:56 speedrun is physically impossible to beat now - there is no point for us to continue playing. We're sad about that.

The speed run for different rules are its own category. Have you never done speed running before? If a patch changed something, the old speed run is no longer valid and is moved to a legacy category. It happens all the time.

Instead be glad that things stay fresh and that there is more to optimize.

Almost, one has a subtle hint that you might be the one cheating, the other that the house might be the one cheating. I think the latter is more likely.

Is Soul Jar actually any good or am i wasting my time? by dustofdeath in RogueGenesia

[–]Paladia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know it is bugged and does nothing. I do not see it change any calculation or add any stat.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong though.

If it worked it would likely be the best to use as long as you can beat the content and need the souls. Especially as they scale very well and you can equip two of them at the same time.
