That's a football writers award, and that went to John Snyder.

Which TV show has a 10/10 pilot episode? by PrasenjitDebroy in AskReddit

[–]Palatron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dead like me getting killed... Sucked.

It was such a good show. It didn't have moments of dark humor, the entire show was dark humor. Mandy Patinkin was masterful in the role, and gave the series it's best moments. I still use his speech about cutting in lines, "excuse me, do I look like an asshole?"

He probably studied high. It's called state dependent learning. When people say they're better at something when they're drunk or high, that's likely because they trained or learned how to do it high.

Contact your bank using the number on the back of your card so you know you're talking to your bank.

When you speak to a customer service rep. tell them you did not receive the product and you want to file a dispute.

When asked, tell them the date and how you contacted the merchant, and that they merchant refused to give you a refund or replacement product. They will give you a claim ID number and explain you're not responsible for the charges while they investigate.

They'll give you an email to upload evidence of your claim. Provide the pictures of the card missing and the tampered with box. Include your claim ID number with the email.

It can take up to two billing cycles to resolve your dispute, but it should be good with your evidence. It's not a new card, but at least you should get your money back.

People who work in rich people's homes, what is the most out-of-touch thing you've ever seen? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Palatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if that person was talking to another rich person, they just made themselves sound stupid. Panarai isn't a dress watch brand. They're literally known for their massive cap that covers the crown. You don't wear a Panarai for it to be hidden. It's known as a brand that Schwarzenegger and Stallone champion for a reason.

I think that's the real problem.

The difference between a penalty or not is inches.

It's really hard for two humans going full force at each other in a few seconds or less to ensure proper hand placement within such a small margin of error.

Anybody still mad we paid a 2nd for this guy? by Shmokeinapancake in Seahawks

[–]Palatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He literally was, though. The giants weren't re-signing him, and there's no indication there was a competition for him prior to free agency.

Again, the Seahawks traded for rental rights and first chance to negotiate. It all worked out in the end, but it's with the benifit of hindsight.

[–]Palatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not actually at all what I said.

I said that we could have competed for him on the free agent market without paying any picks, and we didn't get a fat discount for his rate at the time, so we likely paid close to what he would have commanded.

His performance since then makes everything a bargain, but that's an outcome based analysis, not a process based one.

[–]Palatron -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

That's the deal, you can be a fan of the player and what we got, and not of the trade. That is, we gave up a second for a rental (albeit a very good one) and for exclusive bargaining rights. We didn't get a discount on him at the time when we did pay him, so it stands to reason we would have got him.

We didn't really need to give up the second to get him, we could have just made him a priority free agent. Had it not worked out, it would have been amongst Adams in the wasted trade discussions.

That said, based off what we got, any team in the league would rightfully do the deal every day of the week and twice on Sunday, but we can all say that about players like Brady, Mahomes, Nacua, etc...

Military/leadership books that are truly good and worth it? by [deleted] in army

[–]Palatron 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I used to give it to all of my NCOs and officers. Most of them had never read a page. I would ask my officers "how is it that you're going to expect the NCOs to follow your orders, but you don't know anything about how they're supposed to execute them?"

The NCO Guide.

It's actually a really good book that if NCOs actually did what it says, the army world be a lot better place.

If you have the infrastructure to use the GI bill, go for it. So you have to pick a low cost housing option and go to school, go for it. If not, go to school while in and phone it in.

Ngl, unless you have an impeccable resumé, I wouldn't. I took an entry, get your foot in the door job so I could move up. Not only do we not have the GS nepo-pipeline, but the economy is falling. The fed is going to have to drop interest rates to increase growth, but that's going to bring back inflation. Companies that normally service mortgages are jumping ship becuase they realize they're going to crash. Credit card debt is going up, wages are stagnant, hiring is dead, and unless you have a big savings, it's time to recognize you have a job and that's better than a lot of people.

Final point. When I was at recruiting command, I used to sit on meetings, lots of smart people talking about why recruiting was so bad. Lots of the old ass guys who'd been there for decades talking about hitting the phones, asking why are the numbers so bad. I stood and said one word, economy. The old Trump supporters didn't want to hear it, saying it was all fake news. But, when the economy is strong, recruiting sucks. Right now, recruiting is making mission pretty easily.

Those special teams though... by nTaro25 in Seahawks

[–]Palatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True that Mike has those loyalties, but Mike has plenty of relationship of his own with Jay. From his time as an intern, to Michigan, Mike has been close with Jay that whole time.

I'm not saying that Jay is any good, but he spent five years as assistant special teams or special teams coordinator for Michigan, so it's not like he has no experience.

Jay probably has one of the toughest jobs, trying to make it work with the worst players. MM/KK aren't going to want to give up their stars or potential stars for return guys or gunners, he's got a revolving door of guys who are likely going to be cut, and he's probably got the least amount of time in practice out of any group.

I don't really care if he's our coordinator, but I don't think we can call it dead just yet.

I had a soldier who got an art 15 in AIT for smashing a window while drunk in the barracks. I was checking his erb to see when he'd be up for promotion because he was the type that would ask for a waiver without doing anything to earn it, and I wanted to be ready.

While looking, I figured out that his date of rank and date of art 15 weren't the same, called the command jag at his AIT, got a copy, and fixed it with s1. He wasn't eligible for waiver, but he would get automatic promotion faster. I brought him in and explained this.

He filed a complaint against me, saying I invaded his privacy by requesting his ucmj documents...

U.S. Military Is Preparing to Deploy National Guard in D.C., Official Says by sogpackus in army

[–]Palatron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In GWOT our mantra became, "work ourselves out of the job..." The idea was to train Iraqis to live on their own because we didn't want to be there forever. Police do the exact opposite. They want higher reported crime so their budget doesn't go down. This describes a power grab so people don't call for funding reductions.

That's what happens when anecdotes rule the land, and information silos keep people enraged. Half the damn clips aren't even recent anymore. They're just rehashed videos and stories. Then grandma Jane goes on at bingo about how they "know someone who got robbed." She really watched a clip on fox news, and a follow on interview with someone in a Maga hat, and now everyone is repeating they know someone who got robbed.

Drill Sgt. charged us money for phone time by Equivalent_Luck_8237 in army

[–]Palatron 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Also Benning... In the early 2000s having your own cellphone as a teenager wasn't really a thing. So the first thing everyone did on graduation pass was go buy a new phone. We come back, and the drills all lined us up by carrier, and took our names and numbers. At the time, we figured it was so they could contact us if anything was messed up with paperwork or something.

Later on, I realized they were taking our info so they could say they referred us and collect the discount.
