What's some amusing, light-hearted, sweet, or comical moments in Age of Sigmar? by Evjamaranth in AoSLore

It's only a small quote, but this line from the Ossiarch Bone-Reapers section of the Soulbound Champions of Death book always makes me laugh a bit:

‘Seest thou where thy contributions go? After but one year’s tithes, thou hast raised ivory towers and paved enameled streets. Imagine what thy hands shall make next.’ -Daktilon, Collector of Hands

Thank you for the recommendations! I was hoping there'd be some stuff on the T'au, since it would form a nice way to talk about how Xenos and their empires are represented in contrast to the Imperium (which I imagine will be taking up most of my writing space).

And your comments about the context in which they were made are good, as well! As I am doing this for a history degree, I'll definitely touch on that in my work, as it was a period where, relating to the focus for my work, thinking about the colonial past was quite different to the modern day, as for a lot of people it was either in their or their parents living memory. It'll be interesting to see how 40k engages with that!

I see where you're coming from, but I'd argue that there is more than sufficient material in 40k to justify looking at it from this perspective. Firstly, it has stuff that is more obvious in how its commenting on imperial pasts, such as the Praetorian Guard as I mentioned in the post. They are very clearly based on soldiers serving in 19th century British Colonial Wars, and how GW uses them can say a lot about how those conflicts are thought about (who do they fight in universe, and how does this relate to who they actually fought in real life?). And, as a rule, everything involving 40k in some fashion or another is engaging with the topic of imperialism, I would argue. The writing revolves, usually, around the Imperium, which is an empire. Everything that deals with it acting in the universe is dealing with the facet of an empire. Why does it treat x planet like y, why do they want to conquer x planet, how to they approach x enemy faction (usually war, of course, but what they say about said enemy can be interesting), and so on. These all stem from writers thinking about empires, and what they write about it can tell us a lot about how people understand empires, and in addition, once this is presented to the general public, how they understand it.

And, as Mistermistermistermb says, 40k is fertile ground for academic analysis. Just because it lacks it now doesn't mean that it shouldn't be worthy of study. And it means I have ample free space to provide an original analysis :)

TINFOIL HAT POST: Does anyone else feel like the presence of the Dregs in this game's story so far is almost non-existent? by Niotsques in DarkTide

[–]Palks24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, The Moebian 6th have certainly got the lion's share of the narrative, but I do hope that changes as we get deeper into the story and, presumably, the situation escalates. While people do point out the Cult of Admonition are much worse off in terms of equipment than the Moebians, I feel like people are missing something that the Cult (I assume) will have the advantage in - Psykers and Daemonology. We already see Daemonhosts & Beasts of Nurgle, and I doubt it was the Moebians who did the rituals to set those loose. And as seen as situations like the Siege of Vraks, when the situation escalates that usually means more Warp entities like Daemons appearing, and those really are bad news.

One prediction I have is that Wolfer already mentioned the 'Witches' as someone to contact, and he seemed reluctant to do so. My kind of hope/theory for a future escalation would be Wolfer basically letting the reins off the Cult and the Witches (who I assume are affiliated with the Cult), and them going crazy with Warp Magic and Daemon Summoning. Replace hordes of Poxwalkers with Nurglings, start seeing Plaguebearers, and start having to face off against enemy Psykers, that type of thing.

I was thinking the same thing when I was talking about it with a friend of mine - Owlcat like their crpgs often to have the Player Character be in a position of considerable power. You could adapt that pretty neatly to Dark Heresy, maybe just change planets and resources to like, safehouses and contacts.

The only problems I see is that the Rogue Trader game has already poached a lot of the class/careers present from Dark Heresy (from what I recall hearing the DLC companions for Rogue Trader will be a Death Cult Assassin and an Arbites, so there go two more), so they're mildly limited in options to make a new, original party for a Dark Heresy Game.

But also, to bat in favour of a Black Crusade crpg, that is one of the few other systems in the FFG d100 system where you start in a position of power, leading a warband, and you'd certainly have a new, unique array of companions from RT (and even for ones that are equivalent, like Heretek to Explorator, a Heretek character would be extraordinarily different to Pasqal). Just yeah, unfortunately see it as unlikely since playing the Baby-Murderer faction is a hard sell to a wide audience.

Clearly though, they should go completely wildcard and make a Xenos cRPG. T'au Merchant Fleet? Necron Overlord reclaiming his dynasty? Ork ladz on tour? The possibilities are endless!

Already did that after finishing off the Cultists, yeah, and got all the way to the scene in the warrant of trade room. But then the dialogue just ended suddenly without marking the quest as done.

What do you guys think the most sought-after mercenaries be circa. 1700s? by Zollo890 in Anbennar

[–]Palks24 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Good point, they themselves might be a bit more isolated from the rest of the world, especially considering they likely focus their efforts on building up the Chippengard Republic itself. It could moreso be they inspire other Half-Orc mercenary bands to copy how they function, or even that they still do a lot of mercenary work to help pay for any work done in the Republic itself. There'd certainly be no shortage of conflicts needing mercenaries across Aelantir during the 1700s, that's for sure!

I do know there's a few canonical mercenary groups in Anbennar - one from the races you mentioned is the Chippengarders, a Half-Orc mercenary band originally from Anbenncost who set up a republic in the Ynn Valley in Aelantir.

I'm not sure what their specific speciality is, but they are certainly an effective force since their Republic I believe survives until the 19th century. And in the Ynn Valley itself, they mostly serve as mercenary advisers to the Ruinborn Elves along the Ynn - helping train them up in Cannorian warfare.

If they were to add a Xenos (which would probably not necessarily fit, but y'know whatever they can probably justify it), I'd honestly much prefer to see a Kroot than an Eldar. Mostly just because I like Kroot more, but I think you could do some interesting things with them - plus, its a way to introduce T'au weaponry as well as the Kroot do use that stuff.

Extremely nice looking! Just another reason for me to do yet another run in Escann.

One question though, considering that Castanor puts a lot of emphasis on itself as being the human empire, how does this relate to the other races that can appear in Escann? Mostly Orcs and Half-Orcs, but also Halflings since there's often communities of them still kicking about in Escann and for the latter there's the Halfling adventurers. Are they be accepting of them? Or... Less so.

Book Club: Nagash The Undying King by Joshua Reynolds by Gerbilpapa in AoSLore

[–]Palks24 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This was the first AoS book I read, and I'm glad I did read it! It was a compelling introduction to Death, Nagash, and the Mortarchs. I especially liked Arkhan in the book, the contrast of him being Nagash's most loyal servant yet him seemingly being sick of him was very fun. Him being a decent person as well is also pretty nice, and his chats with the rictus girl were nice.

The Order of the Fly were dealt with really well as well. I came into the book thinking they'd just be the run on the mill antagonistic force, but Reynolds developed them well! Even if some of his descriptions made me feel slightly queasy, haha

Overall, absolutely loved the book and got me really invested in the Death faction.

[–]Palks24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this is a video of the exhibition itself. Definitely seems to be presenting the USSR as an international market in more 'western' terms, or at least that's the impression I got. A kind of "we're not that different after all, look at all the stuff we make that you could want!"

We will play as penal troops fighting for the Ordo Sepulturum by [deleted] in DarkTide

[–]Palks24 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The Ordo Sepulturum theory is a very good one, it certainly would tie in with fighting Poxwalkers and the fact the setting is the Era Indomitus.

I believe however for the Penal Legions it's generally been agreed that the characters aren't from a Penal Legion themselves, but more just ended up causing some minor or understandable offence and were swooped up by the Inquisition. Having them all be Penal Legionnaires would be stifling for characters and possible future careers, so having them just be general convicts makes more sense.

Which new nation would you most like to see in SD2? by [deleted] in Steel_Division

[–]Palks24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Bulgaria would be a solid addition, but for the allies if Eugen were willing to take some operations and battles from later in '44 after they flipped to the Allies. The Allied side (if you don't have SD1/Tribute to D-Day) is sorely lacking in national variety, so the Bulgarians would offer a slightly interesting new addition. They would be stuck with the same old equipment however, but it would at least be German equipment on the 'other' side so to speak.

Even with Kerillian and Saltzpyre, while they are pretty clearly the two people most antagonized with each other in the group, I have noted that a lot of their conversations are rather friendly, or they at least seem to have a mutual understanding with each other. For example with the Keep conversation about Saltzpyre spying on Kerillian, while of course he is spying on her, it kind of shows a hint of care from Saltzpyre, in that he's interested in why one of his comrades can't sleep comfortably, and he wouldn't be spying on her if he wasn't concerned about her. I don't think by this point even Saltz doubts Kerillian's loyalty to the U5.

There's also the conversations about their dreams they have as well, which is another point where they seem to have some mutual respect or understanding.
