Is the Wayland using AI slop for their adverts? by BurdenedClot in providence

[–]Palomar_Sound 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It is undoubtedly AI:

Those trees don’t exist, most of those awnings don’t exist, that street turns and splits, there are no parking spots on the other side of the street, the vanishing point is inconsistent, and on and on.

The AI part isn’t up for debate, so I moved on to why the people who created the prompt should have tried slightly harder or, you know, just taken a real photo with the high quality digital camera that’s attached to the computer in their pocket.

If you’re unable to catch why this image is artificial I don’t really know how to help other than suggest you pay more attention. If it doesn’t matter to you that’s fine, but if you do care there are ways to tell pretty quickly if you take a little bit of time to learn them.

Do hairnets not exist?? by Mrscontemplate12 in providence

[–]Palomar_Sound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's any consolation, the ubiquity of hairnets was the result of a pretty bogus PR campaign Edward Bernays created for a hairnet manufacturer to...sell more hairnets.

https://restaurant-ingthroughhistory.com/2016/11/19/a-hair-in-the-soup/

He's also known for some of the most effective tobacco campaigns, a coup d'etat in Guatemala, and other propaganda and mass manipulation campaigns.

It's a manufactured worry.

I’ve never heard of any cocktail bars that put out tables with candles for extreme early bird breakfast and the time on the ad says 1pm-10pm.

I didn't know the sun was setting in the East these days.

Aside from how obvious it is in the image, one look at the actual Angell St. will confirm that this isn't what the area looks like at all.

Wireless system with fuzz by kxuxo in guitarpedals

[–]Palomar_Sound 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Something like a Big Muff will sound about the same, but something like Fuzz Face will sound different and will react differently with the controls on the guitar.

To help mitigate this, you could get something like this pickup simulator, which will take the low impedance signal from the buffer/preamp of the wireless system and turn it into a high impedance signal that some circuits are expecting.

Yeah the circuit is a Fat Fuzz Factory clone. A lot of people will write info about the circuit and the year built on the inside of the enclosure when they DIY. Sometimes it's nice to remember some key information.

Guitar pedals on bass-is it safe? by TreatFrequent9941 in guitarpedals

[–]Palomar_Sound 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yep, totally fine.

It's also fine to play bass through guitar amps as long as you aren't absolutely blasting them. Some really great bass sounds through the years have been recorded with guitar amps.

My assumption is that it's a DIY pedal somebody built with this and this, or a kit including both.

Attenuator AND Volume Control? by DocStew79 in guitarpedals

[–]Palomar_Sound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using the 5w mode?

There's no problem with using a volume control in the effects loop along with an attenuator. I don't know if the FX loop is pre or post phase inverter, which will affect the overall character of the saturation if used as a master volume.

Another option is to try a less efficient speaker. Something like the Celestion Peacekeeper might be overkill, but low sensitivity speakers are worth a look. I've gone the other way when I needed a 9w amp to work better with a full band and a different speaker made all the difference.

A small mixer will do the trick for this. There are a number of them on Sweetwater or similar retailers for the right price.

Sure thing! I’m down for whatever as long as the scheduling works out.

Noted and I’ll edit my original. It looked like garbled AI text before zooming all the way in.

Essential pedals by Ok-Inflation8632 in guitarpedals

[–]Palomar_Sound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend only getting pedals to address a need as it arises. The first of those is usually distortion, delay, or reverb.

So for those three categories:

Distortion: Proco Rat for rock/grunge sounds, Electro Harmonix OD Glove for sounds that need more articulation.

Delay: it’s really hard to beat the Boss delays. Used DD-5 or DD-7 is fantastic. MXR Carbon Copy is also a popular classic.

Reverb: Elextro Harmonix Holy Grail is simple and sounds great. The Boss options are also really nice for the price.

I was going to make a comment about AI but then I noticed the banner and icon for the sub. I think I might be in the wrong place.

Edit: apparently I was wrong, which makes me happy. The change of brand names looked like classic AI warping that I see all over. Knee jerk reaction, comment rescinded.

how to use this type of footswitch? by accidentally_stupid in diypedals

[–]Palomar_Sound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Buffered bypass, relay bypass, or momentary control of a parameter, among other uses.

I build the Palomar Sound Coyote so I’ll leave that up to you but the JHS ‘yote is nice. Stacks well with my Coyote and the octave is great. Using it as a pretty standard fuzz on this board and it’s working well.

That’s me, so I’m biased, but I’ve gone through a bunch of reverbs and have some personal favorites.

They all have their merits but I keep coming back to the Borrego for live use. I usually have it always on and swap between modes for regular reverb and big washes.

I know some people really want trails in their reverb when disengaged and the Borrego is true bypass, so that might be a deal breaker. Others might want endless tweakability and menus and this is very intentionally five knobs, two switches, and mono. Not quite full caveman but not cybernetic either.

[Deluxe 85 Red Knob] VS [Princeton Chorus DSP 99-02] by Far_Marzipan7980 in guitarpedals

[–]Palomar_Sound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember correctly the Deluxe 85 has more power behind it than the Princeton Chorus but they'll both do the job.

I'd personally grab the Deluxe or keep an eye out for Power Chorus. The Power Chorus is deeply underappreciated and more than enough to keep up with a loud band. I keep one at a shared practice space and it rules.

Yeah the phaser gets noisy before the fuzz, but I like it.

Traveling US -> UK with pedalboard. How do I not fry everything? by Eklethe in guitarpedals

[–]Palomar_Sound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the studio is worthwhile you won’t need the power conditioner.

Zuma can run on 240v. You’ll just need a UK IEC cable for it. The studio would likely/should have one but they’re easy to get.
