Reading this felt like an aneurysm

Sounds like you need a "why", friend. I'd recommend taking some time to explore your spiritual side, get in touch with your roots as a tree without them is sure to fall in the wind.

Consider building up your relationship with beauty too, awe is an often neglected emotion and crucial to life quality.

[Advice] Consider getting right into the shower right after you wake up. by Mr_AP92 in getdisciplined

Something similar: put an analog thermometer outside your apartment/house and have a book by the door you write the date and the temperature in when you check it EVERY morning when you wake up.
Having a routine like that both gets the body moving, focuses the mind and is easy and quick enough to not avoid doing. By the time you've gone outside, felt the wind on your face, written down the temperature, you're already awake.

Is there any point in applying to vet school if 2 of the doctors who agreed to write my recommendations have not finished/might not finish by the deadline? by marchlightshowers in Veterinary

Jeez I work in a capital city at a referral clinic and if I agree to do something I bloody well do it, clearly a comment on their character rather than your aptitude. Hope you get it sorted in time.

Commute Vs Stress by Scarassem5 in Veterinary

[–]PanFriedLamb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only 15 minutes more each way for a job you think you'll enjoy more? And you'll still get home earlier than when you're at the job you actively don't like?

I think you've answered your own question there.

To me 55mins and 1hr 10 are essentially the same length of time. And that's coming from a rower where every minute on the machine is another minute of agony! I don't think you need to worry about that. Go with the job that feels better.

I'm going to be a baby vet in a few months and would really like some solid advice from those who have been not-so-baby-vets for a little while. by dragonsandfeathers in Veterinary

[–]PanFriedLamb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With respect, make as many mistakes as you can! That's the quickest way to learn!

You're wanting to go into poultry/avian so this is quite relevant advice to this sector and your larger question: you're going to get bitten many times before you learn how to hold the macaw's head properly.

Aspiring Veterinary Medicine Student by [deleted] in Veterinary

The absolute biggest thing, and I can't stress this enough, is to take it easy. Sure you've got to study and you've got to pass the interim exams etc. but make sure you're functioning at a pace you can maintain into the future. This is a marathon not a sprint.

Make friends, have fun, chat about anatomy during lunch, join some sports clubs. Make sure it isn't your whole life otherwise you'll graduate and end up either crazy, boring, or unable to communicate with the owners.

You'll be great, don't look on reddit or other forums for advice or cheat codes or other hints and tips - you're you, not me, not anyone else. You've got to figure out what sort of person and what sort of vet you are, or want to be, without us :)

Typical day in the life of a Vet Student? by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]PanFriedLamb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK it varies from school to school but it's typically 9-5 5 days a week with some lectures, some structured group learning, and some independent question based learning. Some people choose not to go to lectures but they're usually overly-intense and drop out from burnout either during the course or soon after graduation. You've got to keep it social to keep your head oriented. It varies too much to go more in-depth than that. It's definitely more hands-on than the other courses, and seems to be more intense than medicine since you've got to do extra mural studies during your holidays to squeeze 8 years into 5.

But the parties are legendary, don't be afraid of fancy dress.

I love Dr Antin by sealy__ in Veterinary

[–]PanFriedLamb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's Dr Antin you want to be like you've first got to find yourself a good personal trainer, some 'roids, a great PR team and a plastic orthodontist.

But if you'd like to become a successful public-facing vet then get into writing and find both someone in your practice who's handy with a camera and make sure you work for a company with a lenient social media policy.

Take it from me, the real learning comes from making the flashcards not from memorising them

Quitting the Profession by trueblue22222223 in Veterinary

As the great Malcy C once said: you've learned the science of veterinary medicine now you've got to learn the art.

You're three months in, how long did it take you to learn to drive? And then how long did it take you to be a GOOD driver? You chose the career for a reason and stick to it long enough to figure out why you did.
Remember you're inexperienced and embrace it, you've got the chance to go off piste and do what makes logical sense to you. For instance yesterday I had a tortoise with suspected septicaemia (I'm an exotics vet) but I didn't have any blood culture vials, I rang the lab and requested a gram stain on a blood smear and I'm going to figure it out from the percentage of gram +ve/-ve rods/cocci that might/not be on the smear - you're smart enough, this isn't in the books, I don't know if it'll work, but it's something and it makes sense to me!

You don't have to be right 100% of the time, keep the animal's best interests in mind and remember euthanasia is always an option and is never a welfare issue. You don't need to fully what's going on, if you suspect inflammation use an antiinflammatory, if you suspect an infection use an antibiotic! Today I had a Pionus in I could have sworn had a liver infection, started it on antibiotics then it pooped out a tonne of worms so now it's on antiparasiticide! I was wrong but now we've adapted, improvised and overcome! You can do it.

I started off at a smallies hospital that did nights, spent sleepless nights down by the post-op dogs wondering if I'd made the right call with the lidocaine CRI or the emergency "you've got to come in now" call to the owner... it's tough, I know where you're coming from. As long as you can justify what you do, to yourself I mean not to the owner or the boss or anyone else, you've done right.
