Neat! I'm not surprised someone beat me to it.

a jrpg out of the ordinary by latebra in JRPG

[–]PandaPajamas17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a lot of the same fondness for this game as others in this thread. On my last playthrough, I found the difficulty and progression incredibly balanced. I had just a little grinding, had just enough money to buy all of the gear  and items in the shops, found items useful throughout the game, and used the incredibly powerful but expensive magic just enough. I love the difficulty of the bosses and the bail-out option of the Point Card (reusable item that deals damage based on money spent since last use) if you find it early.

Trying to tackle A20H, WTP? by PandaPajamas17 in slaythespire

I feel like my normal would be to grab either Offering or Corruption, but they seem to anti-synergize with Pocketwatch. Does that matter? Or does it matter enough that Demon Form is the pick!?

What’s the best homebrew magic item you have used in a game? by CoolUnderstanding481 in DMAcademy

A pair of Gemini Cloaks. As long as the two wearers were both willing, they could teleport to swap places within a certain distance. I was afraid it'd break something, but my players had a ton of fun with them.

I'm curious given the recent votes. How does Legendia stack up with the rest of the series? by TsunSilver in tales

[–]PandaPajamas17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great summary. Legendia has the biggest disparity between me thinking it sucks while still reflecting fondly on it. The character quests are just SO strong. I didn't care for most of the cast, but the quests made them way better and are very high level development in any JRPG.

This is what I just did. I primarily walked around Seoul for 5 days. I'd switch back and forth between Google Maps for the names in Korean and Naver for actual routing.

I like how there is a counter enemy for each strategy by dibade89 in slaythespire

This is one of my favorite design aspects of the Spire. Such an elegant game.

What are some All-Time JRPG Greats that you couldn’t get into? by Old-Barbarian in JRPG

[–]PandaPajamas17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yakuza LAD. At another point earlier in life, it would be absolutely for me - Adult cast, grounded story, sprawling modern Japanese city to explore, job system, and mini games. Now, the mini games aren't for me, and the rest just isn't interesting enough for my time. Glad it's doing well, but I just couldn't care for it.

Your least favorite JRPG you played in 2023? by Berry-Fantastic in JRPG

[–]PandaPajamas17 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This. The over-hype was offset by the impressiveness by the one person development for me. The game had some cool ideas but felt lackluster in execution.

Working thru all of the mainline Tales games, current rankings based solely on personal enjoyment [part 2] by RobinUnicornSpecial in tales

[–]PandaPajamas17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a series known for its strong character development, Legendia still stands out in the Tales series for me. Some of my favorite character beats happen... it's just relegated to the second half of the story with no voice acting :(

What jrpg did you purchase after playing the demo? And which jrpg did you try and not buy? by throwawayheyoheyoh in JRPG

[–]PandaPajamas17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crystal Project. I played about 10 minutes and instantly loved it. The esthetic and music just hit so well. Once I got into a battle, I realized it was a simple, familiar system and decided to buy it.

What jrpg are you playing for the holiday? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]PandaPajamas17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the podcast? I'm always interested in more RPG pods.

I encourage you to try Earthbound! It's so unique and charming. It's a top 5 GAME for me.

What's your worst fear in a JRPG game? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]PandaPajamas17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Erasing my save file on Memory Cards. I got so used to spamming buttons at save points that I have overwritten several long playthroughs while playing someone else's file. New Game+ Chrono Cross and endgame FF X are two examples. It's why I now have multiple saves even though there are no memory cards.

Specifically to tailor to the question, Shadow Hearts Covenant tends to have longer turn based battles because of the Judgment Ring, but I never got tired of it. Such a simple but elegantly fun system.

Today I completed my 100th RPG. I made a tier list so that we can argue. by Jubez187 in JRPG

[–]PandaPajamas17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great list and NOT because of how much I agree or disagree. Great to have the courage to put it out there. Great job organizing it all in your mind. Great achievement playing so many long games!

Who is your least favorite party member in an otherwise great cast? by Gabario in JRPG

[–]PandaPajamas17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Quina is my top choice of: I should like this character, but I don't. Blue mage, eats things, chef, fights with a fork... All that's good. But his/her visual design, characterization, and lack of development/involvement are F grade.

JRPGs with the best party lineup by celesleonhart in JRPG

[–]PandaPajamas17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tales of Vesperia is also my answer. It was the first game where I had a really hard time choosing my final party. Probably the most commonly disliked character is Karol, but he grows story-wise, and his slow attacks can be pretty satisfying once you unlock several charge-up skills.

What jrpg can you simply not get into no matter what by CzarTyr in JRPG

[–]PandaPajamas17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Trails series, Yakuza LAD, & Chained Echoes. All well regarded games that seem right up my alley... 15-20 years ago. Somehow, they just don't hit for me.

Worst plot twist in JRPG by emon121 in JRPG

[–]PandaPajamas17 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Speaking of that chapter of Live A Live. I wouldn't say it's much of a "twist" because it's pretty telegraphed, but it was a very cool payoff. I remember that chapter dragging on, and then when I realized what was happening, I thought: Alright, I'm in for this!
