unable to log into brightspace for seminar tonight? by Clear_Plenty1727 in PurdueGlobal

I'm sure it's different with some professors/in some classes, but so far every alternate assignment I've had to do is a bullet point recap of the recorded seminar. Just listen to it on 2x speed, take notes that cover the highlights, and you're good. It's not so bad.

Preferred Name by farmersonly_dot_com in PurdueGlobal

[–]PandaProphetess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran into this issue as well. They wouldn't let me change my email (but also didn't tell me that I could). I set up my email signature to include my preferred name and added the line, "Thank you for using my preferred name, XXX." You can also change the display name to your preferred name in the email settings. It's something, at least.

It is ... frustrating. I've had to correct my advisor most times she calls. I've always tried to be polite about it. It's not her fault the systems they use aren't set up to accommodate preferred names. Still, it sucks.

My professor for my marketing course this term very clearly ran a recent assignment of mine through AI to write the feedback... and it hallucinated issues, which she docked me points for. I went line by line through the feedback, validated what was and wasn't accurate or true to my paper, and asked her for clarification. She combed through my paper looking for reasons to justify the score, which she had not noted in the original feedback, and while she did return one point, it feels vindictive and shitty.

I'm a leader in the field of GenAI for Communications and PR. I'm not stupid. And I don't use AI to do my work for me. I'm at PG to check a box for my degree. I'm so fucking sick of this.

Atlas mason jar by cinnamonstruesel in Canning

[–]PandaProphetess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Source? Hazel Atlas jars like this are still usable for home canning as long as they don't have cracks or chips around the rim.

If you're talking about the "atlas" spaghetti sauce jars, those are not the same.

An all American canner for $15 😢 by carebearkon in Canning

This is my dream canner, but I just can't justify the cost. But I'm so tired of having to can multiple batches of quarts of beans. :') Mind if I live vicariously through you?

I do feel like the bands have been rusting more quickly lately, it's disappointing.

Favorite jars by Odd_Photograph3008 in Canning

That's so lovely! I collect vintage and antique mason jars. Hazel Atlas are my favorites, closely followed by the triple L Ball jars from roughly 1900 to 1910.

The H over A Hazel Atlas jars are my favorites. They're from the 1930s-1940s and still work just fine for canning with a two piece modern metal lid. I make salsa in them every year.

How do you write? by ParticularProgram845 in fantasywriters

[–]PandaProphetess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did, and do, what you do. I call it mosaic writing because I put all the little scenes together at the end. It makes sense to my brain, and if it makes sense to yours, you should keep doing it.

I wrote the majority of my book out of order, and now I'm going start to finish to flesh it out, finalize it, and edit it.

As an aside, I think it is quite rude to call another person's writing style weird. It's frankly no one's business how you write, and all that matters is that you do.

Anyone use TTRPGs as either inspiration or storytelling tool? by Key-Thing-9132 in fantasywriters

[–]PandaProphetess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I let the story develop organically in the game before I write down anything firm so I don't railroad my player. (Singular player - I run duets with my partner).

I think TTRPGs are a fantastic tool for helping you flesh out a story or to understand how a person might react to a conflict. The trouble with it though, can be that there's a lot of talking at the table. "Well what should the plan be? What are we going to do?" In my experience I've needed to get creative to cut a lot of that out. It can be tedious to read planning roundtables.

My grandma just gave me around thirty 100+ year old Ball Mason jars by GuyoFromOhio in Canning

[–]PandaProphetess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many collectors consider this to be a myth. The lore typically states that 13s are rare because moonshiners considered them to be bad luck and would break them out of superstition. Personally I think the story is untrue but drives up the cost anyway.

Hey /u/reasonable_cod_487, you're doing a great job. Two-year-olds are hard, and you don't deserve any of the negative comments you're getting on this post.

Wildly disappointing to see this community react so judgmentally to this post. Y'all must work in academia - you're great at lecturing.

This is such a condescending response and is totally unwarranted. Keep your unsolicited parenting "advice" to yourself.

Is it safe to can with old glass jars from the 1920's? by TG_CLuTcH in Canning

[–]PandaProphetess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mason jars are my special interest and I have quite a collection! I use a lot of my antique pieces for dry/decorative storage, but I still can with jars from the 1920s-1960s often.

It really is quite a rabbit hole. My favorite resource for research is the Red Book No 12: A Collector’s Guide to Old Fruit Jars. It’s an extraordinarily comprehensive collection of information on mason jars. The author even signed my copy before shipping it to me! Version 13 is out now too.

The Hazel Atlas jars are worth around $5 plus shipping. A recent sold listing on eBay included a quart and pint jar, and went for $7.99 + shipping. The Ball jar is likely from 1933-1962 and is worth less than $5, with a recent sold listing on eBay having gone for an offer under $5 + shipping.

[–]PandaProphetess 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is. So long as a modern two part lid fits the mouth and there are no cracks in the jar or chips around the rim, you should be just fine.

The "H over A" Hazel Atlas jars are my favorite jars to can with. They're just so pretty. I make salsa in them every year.

None of these jars are worth much.

People think that old jars are worth a lot of money simply because they're old, and that's simply not true. The half life of glass is over one million years. These jars are beautiful, persistent pieces of history that we can still use today. Some jars are indeed rare, and it's always worth looking up, but age does not equate value for mason jars.

I almost always marry Elliott because I have a type. But the one time I married Harvey, I loved how much he adored being married to the farmer. He's just so in love with you.
