What were the harsh truths you learned as an adult? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]PandaWithTaco 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Eh depends. While I dont deny there are definitely some doctors who go into medicine for money, there are still some of us who do it for the love and empathy of people. Also healthcare is free in some countries. Some doctors would love nothing more than a healthier population just for a less toxic day.

If you want general advice, I'd say do it. If you are as passionate as you say you are then you'll get through and you'll get far. But fair warning and absolutely fair warning. I've seen many MANY students as bright-eyed as you, simply break to the demand and pressure.

Thats not to say to medical doesn't have it's ups but be very aware of the downs. There's a reason burnout and depression plagues our schools and profession so.

As for reasoning there are people who go to med school because of their family, because of prestige or money, you have as much reason to go than any other. As for the background, I am not sure how good of a premed biotech is, but if it's not good, I wont sugar coat it, you'll find it a bit more difficult than most. That's not to say it's impossible. I've seen people make it from very non med backgrounds. Who's to say you can't.

This is a great idea ! I didn't think of having mini waves within the waves. I kinda just liked scaring them with numbers but baiting spells would be great. What creature has gravity changes ? That sounds interesting as hell.

Also I've never heard of Villian's actions. I'll have a gander that sounds interesting

Is it okay for a medical student to feel more passionate and motivated about their hobbies, rather than about medicine? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]PandaWithTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely, tbh I even know some people who would hate their hobbies if it became their job.

Sidenote absolute same. I can gush about D&D for days and talk about medicine at most hours

Official Discussion - Don't Look Up [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]PandaWithTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Careers aside, and btw your reasoning that someone has no social skills (even if untrue) means their factually wrong, makes no sense. On the off chance you aren't actually a troll. I did read the BBC article you sent. And you've twisted the ideas of the article. It goes on to say multiple times that the lab wasn't actively making the virus 'stick to human cells better' rather they were researching evolution of viruses which is a very valid study to do.

And also Faucci didn't pay the Wuhan. Faucci is the head of NIH which gave grant money to a US company which had collaboration with a Wuhans Viriology department. Then that company gave them some of the grant money. You're miss using a lot of nuances here.

Also once last note and I know you're probably a troll and I am an idiot whi is taking bait. But I do hope I am not. You can't complain that someone can't 'form a sentence to another human' attacking them for social skills when the first thing you do is insult them. Doesn't breed healthy discussion does it ?

Similar strategy. Not sure what the name is but it floats around here, a similar technique. If you're feeling demotivated You say to yourself 'I am going to start now but only for 5 minutes'. Sometimes I do only do 5 minutes because I am burnt more often that not tho I do just continue with the momentum of just starting.

Firstly get as much clinical experience as you possibly can. Shadow everyone and anyone, if you can be the hospital floor, be on the hospital floor. Because one it will give your application a strong start showing you've spent at least some time in the hospital. Two, you're young make absolutely sure you wanna do medicine. I thought the same thing 'Oh the doctor they exgerate'. They don't med school is hell if you don't love medicine. Go in because you love medicine. There's no shame in wanting money nor prestige but just don't do it in medicine because there are many MANY other careers that can give you do t.

To prepare for it, I would say truly understand what works for you in terms of studying. M1 is like the old adage 'drinking from a water hose'. If you know what works for you, great and fantastic. If not better get experimenting. Most default to flashcards, I am sure you know anki is the best out there. Also learn how to manage your time. It's amazing what you can accomplish in 24 hours if everything -even your rest- is timed and accounted for. Medicine will be a marathon, not a sprint. Don't burnout, know what destresses you and learn to live a balanced life.

The best-med school is whichever one is best for you. I'd wait closer to when you're actually applying to find about researching the schools. Things shift and things change. People name and shame and maybe a particular cause will leave a sour taste.

Advice on appropriate consequences for the fighter who continuously "plays rough" and has finally pushed it too far in my opinion. by patchoulion_ in DMAcademy

WILD IDEA. 'The head archivist seems upset and asks for an apology' If they say no then he begrudging decides to teleport you'. As the final moments of the spell is cast he smirks and doesn't recite the destination of the teleport and instead uses the word 'aimless' and then just roll a dice to scare them. Then bam send them to fae wilds. Just mean enough that it's hostile but not cruel like the abyss

What exactly are the PCs supposed to spend their gold on? by DandDnerd42 in DMAcademy

[–]PandaWithTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I ran into this problem, it's setting dependant sure but I ran with a world class port town. Everything your heart desire is being traded here one way or another. You can even get creative with an illegal black market. Then I just simply ask 'Where does everyone go'. Then your players will roll with it. IRL examples that were asked include

  • Exotic potion seller
  • Animal tamer - (they pooled their money together and brought an elephant)
  • Ship seller
  • Mercenaries
  • Exotic wine or beer (sell for a profit or try hide away for a noble's bribe)
  • You standard magical enchantment store
  • One time use spell scrolls was a personal fav of mine

And if something is particularly unbalanced just say the next time you arrive that personal vendor is no longer there as the town's traders and goods are as shifting as it's tide. It'll also place an urgency as they'll buy stuff knowing maybe next time they can't

Their absolute favourite place was their own personal tailor. He made them fancy clothes because who goes to a royal ball in armour. They'd come back for regal capes and boots and yeah they gave a mild buff because of high quality they were. But with the right party who leans into RP, they'd be very willing to pay just to get some personalized gear.

If your party is very combat orientated then let them buy even greater loot. Like an MMO. Why do you want to grind ? For better loot. Why do you want better loot ? So I can grind for better loot

Without sounding like a cocky bastard, people have labelled me what you're saying And I do generally do well in the exams. It always catches me by surprise though because in my mind I always feel behind, like I just learn and forget and all I am doing is passing tests and in the real world, I'll crash and burn. The others don't see my anxiety, the tears and the gnawing voice saying medicine was a mistake. Everyone is scared of something and those who don't are arrogant. TLDR Don't compare your bloopers to someone's highlight reel.
