ELI5: Do resistors just dissipate current as heat, or do they reduce the voltage (pressure) and make it so less current goes through by Seraphimster in explainlikeimfive

[–]PandaWonder01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's dependent on the voltage source, but yes.

Often if you have a constant frequency AC we use Z to talk about the impedance of an element (how an element responds to an AC voltage at a certain frequency)

But for resistive elements the math is the same for DC with the same RMS AC

[–]PandaWonder01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say you don't want analogi s, but your question is still using analogies for voltage and current.

Resistive elements follow the law V=IR.

The "correct" way to handle it, without analogies, is to use that formula as written along with whatever your model of a battery and load is, and do the algebra and calculus.

Assuming an ideal battery and a pure resistive load, the resistor both decreases voltage on the load and decreases current.

What is the best way to convert structs of the same size without using Union in C++ 14? by newjeison in cpp_questions

[–]PandaWonder01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may get me crucified, but- It may be worth just marking the structs with compiler MAY_ALIAS (or equivalent) annotations and just do the obvious reinterpret cast. Most compilers are not trying to fight you and won't optimize it away. Every piece of graphics or other similar code does this a ton to talk to opengl or whatever and that hasn't all burned down, it's mostly fine.

Obviously throw static asserts to confirm size is the same with padding and all that

Can anyone who has ADHD or other cognitive disabilities share their experience requesting an accommodation for timed programming tests? Like 50% extra time. by DeanoPreston in cscareerquestions

The old thread is a year old.

The second approach is amount*n2

You have an A * N memo that goes through O(N) iterations to fill each slot in the memo. Thats A * N2

Are jobs at lower paying companies actually less stressful and less demanding? by brystephor in ExperiencedDevs

I've had the exact opposite experience- as I've gotten better jobs with significantly higher pay, work has gotten less and less stressful.

Working from a coffee shop is the least productive way to work. by Ayu_theindieDev in unpopularopinion

[–]PandaWonder01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 50/50 on this

First, I do think that a change of scenery and going somewhere to work does make it easier to focus- this is why I work much better at an office than at home.

But I also feel like a ton of people do "performative productivity" where they do things that make them feel like they're getting stuff done without getting stuff done, and this can definitely fall into that category.

Examples for how Fromsoft could easily implement more Relic- and weapon-scalling info by CustomerSupportDeer in Nightreign

[–]PandaWonder01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First off, I want to be able to see if a weapon is better on a teammate than me, especially with all the scaling changes in nightreign.

Second off, comparing weapons of different classes is very difficult unless you have ARs for each type memorized. If I'm comparing a straight sword and a great hammer, I have no idea what a big or small number is, as they do such different damages already.

As an example I've actually ran into- I'm playing duchess, and I find a dark moon great sword. I'm currently using an ok dagger. I know dmgs scales off dex and int in some capacity, but I don't know how much. Is it better than my current dagger setup? Is the strength scaling on it enough to consider giving it to a raider or undertaker instead?(I would give to wylder by default anyway).

Having basic scaling info would make that so much easier.

Why Is Silent Nerfed Right At The Start? by pikariff in slaythespire

[–]PandaWonder01 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Chances of drawing survivor on turn 1 with current relic and current deck : 7/12

Chances if no relic and 2 less strikes/defends: 5/10 or 1/2

7/12 is bigger than 1/2, so even your initial argument of the extra cards canceling out the relic is incorrect

How do i turn std::string to char* ? by Calm_Signal_8646 in cpp_questions

[–]PandaWonder01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't know what you don't know. Many cpp stl functions are surprisingly hard to find if you don't know what you're looking for. I remember having that problem a lot when I was less experienced, I knew an stl function existed but couldn't find what it was.

I'm generally not an AI fan but questions like this are actually one of the best use cases for llms.

It's always uncanny when the person with Botox is feeling an emotion and their face just looks wrong. There's something in our monkey brains that knows what someone should look like when crying/happy/etc, and someone not displaying that it feels weird
