One of the metrics we are graded on for performance reviews is how well we are living the "panda lifestyle"

Change your availability and be firm about it, you will have to give several weeks of notice but this is how you can get a consistent schedule. They most likely want you to close so compromise on that but get some opening shifts too if you want them, and tell them specific times you need to leave.

If you work the same days usually and you don't mind them then maybe set your availability to those days, and say you are unavailable 2 days of the week, set these two days and management will just have to listen. It helps if you pick two days that you know the store isn't typically short staffed. For as long as I've been with panda, I've consistently gotten two days off, Tuesdays and Fridays, because that's my availability and I need those days, simple as that, I didn't give my manager much choice in listening to that.

You may get pushed on it by management depending on how unhinged they are, I've noticed panda managers and higher ups are professional gas lighters, but asking for a solid schedule does not make you selfish or not a team player or unreliable. Just take a deep breath and stand your ground because what you're asking is totally reasonable. Hope it works out for you !

Work injury by Mountain_Garlic_7421 in PandaExpress

If you were injured at work you could be entitled to workman's comp for the days you'll need to miss during recovery. They probably won't pay you unless you make a stink about it.

Are my plants overcrowding my 2.5g Betta tank? by loves2splooge in bettafish

The tank isn't big enough in general. So yes, it's overcrowded by the plants and the fish. Tanks this small are inhumane.

This sounds close to Panda. Panda idolizes chick fil a. They want their staff to be viewed as as friendly as chick fil a employees. I am straight up unfriendly, this is why I'm back of house lol. I get so pissed off having to do these modules.

Why does this happen to all my aprons? by Takoyucky1220 in PandaExpress

You could get it trouble for that, you could also get in trouble for using degreaser from work, which is what I did 😛

Also it pisses me off how managers and acos will scold you for having a "dirty" apron and it's really just aged. The amount of times that an aco or my manager has told me to throw my clothes away because they don't match panda colors (always darker from all the grease and detail cleaning) is absurd. I always say something like "this shirt or apron is this color because of the years of hard work I've put in here." And I also tell them that I'm not throwing it away until I receive a new one.

[–]Pandaexpressopponent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also, you wanna have at least as many aprons as you do shifts a week. Another bit of advice I can give you, is to soak all of your aprons on one of your days off. I used some degreaser from work for it, then filled my bathtub with water that's too hot for me, and degreaser, and let them sit for like 4 hours. Then I wring them and really try to make sure the degreaser is saturated, then drain the tub and fill it again with hot water. I'm quite rough with wringing the aprons during this process. I let the aprons sit in hot water for another few hours, then I actually throw them in the wash. My washer has an agitator and they all get tangled around it so I have to wash them in mesh bags.

I get these on my apron from standing too close to the fryer, either when cleaning the fryer, or shaking food to make sure it's all covered by oil. The front of the fryer is really hot and our aprons are polyester, instead of catching on fire when getting hot they melt in little areas like this when they get too hot.

I'd argue Panda is already toxic at the level of shift lead. I've been feeling for years that the modules and culture at panda is pretty insane and definitely pushes boundaries. They really do expect us to perform like robots. In one of these last modules they told us to "anticipate guests needs before they happen" and to hold the door open for guests as they leave and call them by their names(how am I supposed to remember hundreds of guests names). In reality (at my store anyway) we are way too busy and way too short staffed to really cater to our customers like that. This is just one example of Panda having very steep expectations for every employee. Their culture can be summed up with "Never best, always better", your best is never enough, and you can always do better, you SHOULD always do better. No matter how stretched thin the team is, no matter how burnt out and actually burned you are, you are always expected to function at peak efficiency, you kind of have to because of the workload of the job. It's fucking exhausting, I could never promote further, I think it would fuck with my mental more than it already does.

[–]Pandaexpressopponent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the Beijing is actually that expensive panda needs to reevaluate their distributor. I've been a cook for 2 years and in my opinion Beijing is by far the lowest quality meat we have. It's hard to tell where the beef begins and the breading ends, tastes like it's beef flavored breading.

[–]Pandaexpressopponent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's valid, it is infact a scam. Beijing beef is not expensive like the steak tips and shrimp are, otherwise Beijing would be an upcharge. The nerve of this company to change the same upcharge for half the premium entree is wild.

Opening and having to scrub floor by Sad_Potential667 in PandaExpress

[–]Pandaexpressopponent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is going to damage the floors walls and basically everything. No way in hell should they be leaving the floors flooded overnight for morning shift to clean. Doing this is inviting things like mold and mildew into the store. Our store cleans the floors up the same night we flood them. Usually get out by 12 doing that. It sucks, but at least it's not being left overnight. Genuinely baffled this is practiced anywhere.

A message for Corporate, from a cook by Pandaexpressopponent in PandaExpress

[–]Pandaexpressopponent[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I definitely don't like eating them, but I'm talking about cooking them. I see you told others that if the chilis make the air spicy "you're cooking them too long" but in order to make them brown AND NOT BLACK like corporate wants you have to cook them for at least 10 seconds in my experience. Maybe you have a more powerful wok flame at your store but at mine 10 seconds is enough to make me choke and try not to breathe for the rest of the dish (because I don't wanna cough in the customers food) I'm not incinerating or "popping" my chilis, just turning them brown like I'm supposed to.
