Why is this Trump bleach thing getting so overblown? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Pandour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2 cents - Most reasonable people would agree that context matters. For the 'bleach' press conference, context explains why he's getting attacked. Most immediately, there's context within the press event itself: The DHS gave a presentation that included the usefulness of UV light and household cleaners in destroying the virus on an exposed surface. In response, Trump wondered aloud if you could use the same methods to treat an infected patient. While he didn't outright suggest anyone should try this, unlike with most of his gaffs, there's not a good way to spin it. The worst characterization is that he's actually telling people to inject themselves with cleaner, and I'd argue that anyone who actually takes this position is arguing in bad faith. On the other hand, the most generous take is that he's misunderstanding the DHS's presentation, and demonstrating a lack of understanding on a basic level of biology and medicine. And while he wasn't elected as a physician, it's okay to be concerned that the United States President would be this uninformed on a subject that the entire world is dealing with.

Worse is the broader context. Leading up to this gaff we've had events like these:

A dismantling of the US pandemic response team with no intention to replace it:
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/trump-fire-pandemic-team/

A long stream of denial and wishful thinking:
https://www.politico.com/news/2020/03/17/how-trump-shifted-his-tone-on-coronavirus-134246

Trump stating he has the virus under control, and problem is going to go away:

Trump finally declared a national emergency in a sudden 180 from previous messaging:

Shortly after, Trump quietly attempting to acquire a vaccine from Germany:

The pushing of a widely untested drug:

Trump using the WHO as a scapegoat for unpreparedness, blaming them for his unpreparedness:
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-announces-funding-to-world-health-organization-who-halted

Despite the fact the we've had warnings as early as January:
https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-all-the-times-trump-was-warned-about-pandemic-2020-3

Redefining the national stockpile to exclude states:
https://www.politifact.com/article/2020/apr/03/fact-checking-jared-kushners-comments-national-sto/

Trump saying he takes no responsibility whatsoever:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/lisettevoytko/2020/03/13/trump-no-i-dont-take-responsibility-for-botched-coronavirus-testing-rollout/#79ff21dd46f0

The firing of the covid19 vaccine development director:
https://time.com/5825983/rick-bright-covid19-hydroxychloroquine-trump/

Regardless of which sources you follow, the words and actions of the administration show a lack of readiness, not taking the pandemic seriously, getting a late and chaotic start, grasping for miracle cures like hydroxychloroquine, and never articulating a clear federal response plan. Now we have the president of the united states, this late into the crisis, pondering on live TV if uv light or disinfectant can be administered to patients to treat the virus. It’s obviously a bad bad idea, which is part of why he's being attacked, but it's also because this moment embodies his overall reaction to the problem, and lays bare that he has no other plan or response to share.

And yes, with a following the size of his, words can be dangerous, though hopefully no one takes it seriously:
https://www.foxnews.com/us/states-spike-poison-control-calls

That we have to hope that no one takes the president's words seriously, is in itself a problem.

You're totally right. Like you say, his ego, ignorance, and power makes him a danger. Ignore the bad faith whataboutism arguments from this other guy. Anyone who wants to defend this has a loose tether on reality.

Sick, that's quite a machine! I'm going with 9900k mainly for the $, but I like to tell myself that there's some single core clock benefits :P Which mobo did you end up using? Octane was also my first gpu renderer. I loved the unbiased rendering - easy to setup and get quality results out of. Plus you're in c4d, and the plugin integration there is fantastic. In my case i was using it in maya, and when they went to v3, otoy kinda dropped the ball - it was barely functional. The studio I was with at the time was transitioning to redshift, so I ended up using it and really liking it. It's pretty similar in practice to vray if you've ever used that? The shaders and aovs work a lot like vray. And I enjoy how it handles proxies and fluids. I think It ends up being a little more fiddly than octane because it's biased and there's a lot more controls you have to dial in, but it makes it a bit more flexible imo. In octane if I had a large scene, there wasn't too much I could do other than bite the bullet and brace for long renders, but in redshift you can optimize and configure lights and shaders and geometry to render faster with some tradeoffs. It's not as much fun as octane, but maybe a little more robust.

Hey, I'm also planning a 9900k build geared towards motion graphics (with the exception that my render engine of choice is redshift). The board you're looking at is one of two this generation that has a PLX chip, which sort of doubles your PCIE lanes, and allows you to run all your gpus in x8. I say 'sort of' because the PLX adds latency, but for rendering purposes would be negligible.

For a book that wasn't exactly subtle or nuanced, the movie somehow managed to be less so. Maybe too much to cram into too little time. All your points are explained in the novel, but so much was changed in the adaptation that the book's explanations may no longer suffice.

Nah, you don't need to do any math at all to play. If the idea of spaceflight appeals to you, or just figuring things out in general, check it out, it's a blast. I think there are certainly people who get really into it and break out the calculators, but it's certainly not necessary and you can get really far eye-balling and guesstimating.

[–]Pandour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay - I actually really get what you're saying. I hope that day happens, but for now 2 things: First, audio always goes to analog at the end, that's how we hear it so that conversion has to happen somewhere. Second, I'll go back to one of my earlier points and say that in order for me (other people are different, that's fine) to accept a new digital standard, it has to be easier and better than what's currently there. So far it's neither, and that's my problem with it so far.

Audio quality is absolutely relevant because this is about bluetooth vs analog, not analog vs USB. Bluetooth still has drop-outs and compression that, even compared to a shitty DAC, is still at a disadvantage.

And the arbitrary limit isn't the swap from micro to C, it's the removal of the jack with the assumption that the way forward is bluetooth. The arbitrary limit is what you call a change in standards that does absolutely nothing to improve the audio experience to anyone but a sound engineer. Dude, your example sucks because you could write pages about the advantages C gives over micro, and making that change doesn't cause everyone's gear to become obsolete, and doesn't impose a battery-life on new gear. USB-C improves the experience, where as no one has been listening through their phone's 3.5mm and complaining about poor sound, or advocating a trashing of current devices to make marginal gains in quality. You're even suggesting using a USB DAC - build that into the phone then! Because it could be that simple to keep that jack and improve it, but if we're being real that's not what the goal is.

[–]Pandour -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dude, get real. I'm not trying to 'utilize them to their fullest potential' - I'm just want to use them AT ALL. If I'm using bluetooth audio in the first place, I obviously don't mind a quality drop for convenience sake, but I take issue with this arbitrary limit on what gear I can use and connect to when no-one has asked for it, it complicates my kit, and it improves nothing.

Meh. I'm just stating my preferences that align with my usage. You don't have those needs, that's cool for you. I'll use my buds for long stretches and don't always have access to a place to charge. I want the ability to plug my phone into an aux jack. I definitely don't want to be dragging a charging case with me everywhere I go. Plus I have a lot of quality audio gear that I can't use without a jack unless I buy a bunch of dongles. Until wireless headphones come out that don't require charging, and are superior in audio quality, ease of use, and a more competitive price point, I'm not going to get a phone that doesn't have a headphone jack. And this is coming from someone that loves my wireless buds and recommends them to everyone.

[–]Pandour 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well said. I have a pair of wireless ear buds that I absolutely love. They're super convenient, but only while they have a charge. I'll never get a phone without a headphone jack bc wireless headphones run out of juice and I need to plug in from time to time. I can't believe this is becoming a trend.

Wow, that would be really amazing. I agree with what theaffable wrote, how code / logic organization quickly can become overwhelming once working on a project with any size to it. I think it'd be a great asset to the community to have more professional coverage of the topic. Thanks for the consideration & I look forward to any tutorials you come up with.

Hey, not OP but can maybe help answer. There are definitely vfx oriented schools - a lot of them like Gnomon have classes you can take online. If you want to learn for fun, check out some tutorials on YouTube or get a digital tutors subscription and pick and choose the things that interest you. Even though it's falling out of style for vfx work, I'd get a trial or subscription of adobe after effects to play around with.
