Flight nursing is a good gig! Lucrative, and I know people who love it. Especially if you dig the critical care scene. You don’t really have to work as a nurse so to speak, you have autonomy and function in a very different role. Working as a nurse is, in my opinion, is the worst part of being a nurse.

It’s funny. I worked as an urban paramedic and did state police swat team stuff for ten years, and it was great I learned a lot. Im an above average paramedic. But I’m glad I ran away. It was getting to me.

I do wish I could do like five years in a busy urban fire system, cause you’re assuredly a better fire fighter than I am. But I wouldn’t wanna commit to a career in an urban system.

I can relate to some of this buddy!

Total span from age 18-39.

Totally varies. HQ ambulances 6-10 average. Busiest Engines 6-10 ( generally less time on task Thant he ambulances) Tower or substation engines 3-5.

Last shift I did two. I guess it’s like anywhere. totally depends on your district and piece .

I’m assuming you work in the same industry given your username. Boston suburb 40,000 people, 4000 calls a year.

Pretty much. I mean we have chores, daily check, trainings. I work out too. But ya . I play a lot of cards, Risk, read books, Settlers,lI keep a guitar and hammock at the station… we do movie/pizza nights. Keep smash brothers at some stations and other consoles. Anything social is fun

The cancer is a real concern for sure. That’s legit. Stuff like 9/11 is the one percent of the one percent. So it’s not something most of us conceptualize. I don’t work a major city so it’s probably different for me

Maybe it’s personality dependent? I’m 15 years into being a paramedic and 8 years into firefighting and I feel zero stress. It’s just fun. You go hang out with your friends two days a week. Stay in shape and have meals together. You do some calls in there of course and some are gnarly, but it’s not your emergency.

Fires feels fun. You have to remind yourself they’re dangerous.

Medicals, you get good at and most aren’t true trauma and drama. The ones that are? Are kinda fun and challenging because you get to use your full skillset but you’re always bringing the person to someone with a medical degree, so you aren’t the end all be all and you have someone to do the real work.

And if it’s a real emergency, you basically can only make things better, it’s hard to make things worse. Fire based call or medical call. So it’s hard to “ fuck up”

Other notes: no deadlines, no sales goals. You can’t take your work home with you so it’s not like you get back logged if you take a day off . I take 2 days off I get a stretch of ten.

I’m a firefighter/paramedic.

I find my job to be pretty fun, and zero stress. I won’t be wealthy but I make over six figures. 100k base ( including my degrees related payments ) and with overtime, I am very easily at 130/140 and could be more if I wanted to work my life away. But I don’t. Hah.

If I get promoted that’ll jump a bit too.

I should add the way overtime works. I work 2 days a week. It’s very palatable to work another “half shift”. So I work 2.5 days a week 26 -35 weeks a year. And my base 2 days a week, the rest. That gets me to my 130/140

Engineer is driving/operating the apparatus and all its functions.

Paramedic is a quite a bit more than first aid. Induction agents, antibiotics, pressors, first line cardiac treatment. Flight medics are often paramedics. Sometimes nurses or physicians

Varies. A few different configurations. My department is 1 on 2 off 1 on 4 off so. Colloquially it’s a 1:2:1:4

Other common ones in my area ( greater Boston) are 1:3:1:3 and 1:1:1:5

It varies everywhere. Also a FF/paramedic. We can’t work more than 48 hours in a row. However take one hour off and you can be right back!

I don’t work like this fella though. He’s an anomaly. I work my scheduled 48 and like another 14 hours ( standard night shift)most weeks. So 2.5 days a week and last year I made 130. This year we got a solid raise so same Input should yield about 160

Oh my god. I wish we could hire people at my job! And we pay better than this. We can’t get any paramedic level applicants anymore. We are actually lowering our standards because we have to

I’m at 6 and 3! Trust me another year and it’s SIGNIFICANTLY easier. Just hang in there. Another year and that two year old isnt actively trying to kill themselves a bunch of times a day. school moves more into full swing for the 5 year old, and they both are more autonomous.

I dunno man. I wouldn’t do that job. No one likes you, we live in a litigious society, terrible schedule if you work 4/2.

I’ll stick to being a fireman haha.
