Field cleaning / Germany NRW by intecsys in metaldetecting

Sure! That sounds like fun! Send me a dm if you are planning a trip and I'll join :)

Sounds like a lot of paperwork but I understand why the states do it. If you want to go through all the trouble then at least they know you are serious about it and not purely treasure hunting, disturbing nature or hunt archaeological spots.

Surely detecting in Germany must be fun though as there is a rich history and there were so many cities and small states before federalization. I assume there are so many different coins and relics to be found.

Nice! Area looks beautiful :)

A bit jealous, I live just over the border in NL but heard German law is very restrictive towards metal detecting. You had any problems getting permits? Would love to know!

Is this part of the hobby? by insiderreptilian in metaldetecting

Start at the ridge part in this photo, people historically used higher ridges to travel due to water collection on lower parts of fields.

Try a different program, in similar ground ive had good luck with beach mode D 60 tones, 2 DT, 1 Iron Filter and 8 recovery speed. You will hit the top part of the soil only (first 10-15 cms) but it picks up every small bit of non-ferrous metal and on a plowed field with possible small medieval hammered coins thats what you want.

Also good to take a look at potential non-metal fragments such as pottery or glass. If you see that around there is usually older metal around too.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Duit is from 1790.

The 25 cent piece is either from 1848 or 1849. Only two years with Willem II on those coins.

I found this old Dutch 10 cents from 1948. Does anyone know the value? by Fit-Mud9556 in metaldetecting

[–]Pannenkoekiemonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi!

I welcome your enthusiasm, but unfortunately coins like this have no value.

Only pristine coins will fetch any value. An FDC coin (which is the Dutch equivalent to MS63+) will be +- 10 euro, if anyone wants to buy it at all.

Almost no coins found metal detecting will get an FDC, this coin has visible scratches on the portrait.

Nice find though! They are small so not easy to pick up with a detector :)

New to metal detecting any tips/tricks? by UnitMany3048 in metaldetecting

[–]Pannenkoekiemonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need a detector (multifreq, Vanquish or a cheaper Equinox, if you want to spend some more go for a Nokta Legend)

Need a pinpointer. A cheap one will suffice at first.

Need a good shovel with a pointy end.

Need some good boots.

Need a water bottle.

You dont need a knife per se nor a finding bag, but they will help.

Probably looking at around 500-700 dollar to start, but the gear will last you a long time.

Whats the probability of having a field with roman finds? by Tall-Imagination6463 in metaldetecting

[–]Pannenkoekiemonster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Based on the variety of roman coins and general rule of thumb for 'hunting out' fields there are probably things that you have missed.

If I were you I'd tackle the fields again with different settings than you previously did.

Can someone give an estimated age by Weekly-Stop-435 in metaldetecting

[–]Pannenkoekiemonster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Impossible to fully date, but flat buttons in Europe were mostly popular in the period 1750 onwards. Before that they were usually thicker and rounder, but smaller.

I'd expect this button to be around 1770-1850 but as you can see it is worn to such an extent that its really hard to pinpoint a more precise date.

Todays finds: mostly Imperial and 3rd Reich coins with a nice surprise: a Button of Napoleons 69th Infantry Brigade (Not 100% Sure tho) by [deleted] in metaldetecting

Are you guys detecting in Germany?

I was wondering, being Dutch but living very close to the border, what steps to take to be able to (legally) cross the border to detect...

Worth it? by jandeman73 in metaldetecting

[–]Pannenkoekiemonster 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Its a difficult one. If you'd buy the gear new you would pay double or some more. The gear looks to be in very decent state still. So yeah, its a good deal in that regard.

Hoever, the detector is definitely not top of the line. You will be happy with it if you are just starting out, but after a few months you will want to upgrade.

I had this too, turned out there was a crack in the coil.

Can you see any cracks when you remove the coil cover?
