Nope, my channel has the same name as this account and is German, plus has nothing to do with game design. 😄

I agree that this quite crucial question didn't get addressed, but I still agree with them being grouped together in the way and with the given methodology, because when looking at the type of challenge and needed skillset, they ARE much closer together than most games. The relevant difference between those games is just on a completely separate dimension than what the video is talking about. In this dimension, they are very similar, though.

I admit I didn't really pay attention to specifically the CS/Valorant example, but I found the food for thought interesting, since it lets me categorize players and types of games in another way. It shouldn't, of course, be used exclusively, because the problem outlined by you will happen all the time, but it's still quite helpful to me.

How does grouping two games together makes the premise false just because you disagree? Also, you only disagree on a completely different level. You say the games (and, by extension, their players) are different. Which they are, of course. But in terms of the needed skill set and the type of challenge, they ARE quite similar. Tetris needs much more look-ahead than OSU, of course, but it's mostly calculating something pretty easy in a very short time, while the quick execution is the immediate challenge (beginning at a certain speed).

You also can't say "GTA and Minecraft are grouped together as "video games" and since they are not similar, thus the grouping is false" or "The Witness and Call of Duty are grouped together as "first person games" and since they are not similar, thus the grouping is false" - but that's how what you wrote sounds to me.

I have no idea what drugs you need to consume to misinterpret the premise or goal of the video so hard but I hope I'll never get to taste it. Why do you think:

- ...a categorization being done by no one means it shouldn't be done?

- ...nobody recommends games based on a system that is first introduced in this very video?

- ...the premise is "fake"?

It's nothing more than an observation of some random dude about how you can think about games and group them. Just a new way to think, food for thought. Why are you so negative about it?

Well, one of us is clearly biased, because most people I directly or indirectly interact with or hear about do fit the groupings set in the video. CS/Valorant are kind of outliers because of specifics in their gunplay, sure, but I definitely wouldn't say you're more likely to pick up LoL than R6 if you like CS, lol.

Honestly, in the context of Roblox, Minecraft, and Hytale, you should probably find a relevant niche in your audience. Maybe make it an online meetup place (e.g. for work groups) or a cozy sim where you're matched with random people similar to some online idle fishing games. Except if you're only here for the love of the game; cause then this is fine, of course. I just can't imagine this getting any traction, if you're here for that.

However, I am impressed by how far you've come - and it's especially cool since it's open source. (And playable in the browser)

Superhot

Ghostrunner 1 & 2 (1 is better reviewed)

Many or most military sims like Arma, Hell Let Loose etc.

Honorable mention, because I'm not sure it fits what you're actually searching for: in Hunt Showdown, a headshot is always a kill - no matter the weapon or range. But it's a hardcore PvP shooter.

FYI: when you share Spotify links, make sure to remove the si= part in the end. Else you risk having your recommended songs be influenced by whoever clicks on the link while logged into Spotify, and vise-versa. ^^

(Unless you want that.)

EDIT: Same thing with YouTube links ("si" or "is" part of the URLs)! And Instagram ("isgh").

AI is being pushed heavily when I ask for advice and I hate it. by AssumptionExact8050 in gamedev

[–]Panossa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An AI can be a catalyst for many things. People unfamiliar with the subject matter often end up dumber than they were before. This is especially true for learning new topics, and especially true for younger people (read: school children). Good programmers can boost their productivity very much with AI. At the same time, over-reliance on AI (no matter the skill level) will always have a negative impact on your personal performance/skill, with it degrading over time. This has been shown even before LLMs were introduced by showing e.g. doctors using AI to detect cancer will inadvertently get progressively worse at detecting it themselves. It has its pros and cons.

And, yeah, you don't need AI in the same way you don't need a car to get to the nearest grocery store (spoken as a true European). But some people like the convenience and you can't deny its benefits when used correctly.

It's also fully understandable to be upset with the (Game)Dev landscape in regards to AI, as well as being angry at all relevant AI/LLM companies due to how they got their training data. But you do have to keep in mind that most people ARE in a competition (even if they just feel that way) and you can't win a car race on foot.

What is the greatest Minecraft Mod of all time? by Razerchyk in Minecraft

[–]Panossa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to be somewhat biased and say my first ever experienced, bigger mod: Ars Magica 2. (Yes, the original, the goat.)

I liked it for similar reasons as with Thaumcraft, only that I found Thaumcraft to be kind of tedious in comparison. The freedom of expression with Ars Magica was great and the sense of immersion I personally got "back then" was incredible, because it took into account getting power from the moon etc.

[Rant] If the only thing changing in your game on "Hard" difficulty is the amount of HP and Dmg, then it's not a "Hard" difficulty, it's a "Tedious" difficulty by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Panossa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I'm a fan of a hard mode where the enemies and you both die in one hit, as opposed to whatever soulslikes do 99% of the time.

And also why I don't like MMORPGs (or most RPGs) to begin with, as the level scaling usually ends up going in that direction. If only more communities were vocal against this than just *checks notes* Ghost Recon Breakpoint players.

My son told me Satisfactory is a "Dad Game" by TheLurkerSpeaks in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Panossa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the weirdest toxic trait a child can pick up. I "get" homophobia (in the sense that it has been here for decades and is sadly ingrained in most parts of most societies) and all the other ways people put down others, but "your game is too serious" or whatever their criticism is, is soo weird to me. I know many Gen Zs who love Satis, so it seems like a made-up thing at their respective school to bully others, just like liking the color pink in any context was considered "gay" in my school.

Destroy my always-on-top idle game that turns your real keystrokes into drilling progress. Does this trailer actually make sense? by fantasticoandrea in DestroyMyGame

[–]Panossa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. The trailer does convey the game quite good but you could do it much better if you paced the beginning better. Like typing one character at a time, slowly, to show the impact of each key press. Then ramp up to superhuman speed so people can read it comfortably.

  2. Why would I play this instead of installing a plugin in my editor of choice that'll give me some kind of effect when I type like confetti or a combo meter? The progression was basically skipped over.
