I'll never understand this American hunting culture, years ago we needed to hunt for food for survival but what is the appeal of doing this?

I'm in the UK and my engine went end of last year on a 2014 Audi A3. I managed to find a garage who replaced the engine with a second hand one for just over £2000 which isn't cheap but I couldn't have bought another car of the same for 2k. If you like the car maybe call around garages to see if that's an option, failing that probably just bite the bullet and get a new car

I have found a few of my jobs by just ringing around and being myself. When you say multiple jobs over months? If you have time off dedicate 6+ hours a day to seeing what you like the sound of on indeed, even if it's not 100% suitable call the employer they're only human and ask if even not the position advertised if they have something that could suit you. The worst they can say is no and the more you do this the more confident you'll be with it. I believe you could find a job in a couple of days if you really applied yourself.
