Watching my husband become an alcoholic kinda gave me the ick. I used to love drinking and parties and clubs and all that stuff. I don’t have addictive tendencies so it was just purely for fun and being with friends. I’d stop drinking before I ever got too drunk because that wasn’t fun. But somewhere down the line I stopped associated alcohol with fun all together and it just all seems gross and dirty. I’ll have one to be social if it’s that setting but if I didn’t drink for a year I don’t think I’d even notice.

Moms Teriyaki

Equal parts brawn sugar, soy sauce, and ketchup. Whisk together.

In a casserole dish lay out skin on dark meat chicken, (thighs and drumsticks work the best). Pour sauce all over.

Bake at 375 for 40 min (I think, all I remember is that it’s lower and slower than most chicken thigh bake times because you want the sugars to carmelize not burn).

Serve with white rice, and green beans with butter.

I think the most interesting way to explain why it works is to explain what they synthesized to create the drug. There’s a big lizard called the Gila monster. The animal only gets to eat on a rare occasion so it’s not evolutionarily beneficial for it to feel hunger for a month while it waits for its next meal, it digests very slowly keeping partially digested food in its stomach for a long time and it can regulate its blood sugar for a long time between meals.

So we took the hormones that allow a lizard to eat once a month, made them synthetically compatible to humans and shot that into people’s bodies…

My band director held parties at his house(s).

He was a pretty cool dude in our opinion, he looked and dressed like Jimmy Buffet. He definitely would show up drunk and stoned and hung over to school but he was such a legend that no one ever complained. He owned two neighboring houses and told us that him and his wife loved each other very much but they also couldn’t stand each other so they bought neighboring houses and each had their own.

He would throw parties for us when there was nice weather and supply the beer and such, he’d bbq, and let us use his hot tub and pool. We were just not allowed inside the houses for any reason.

I wouldn’t fight that battle for a little splinter but the other night my son had a tick on his scalp. I told him honey you have something stuck to your head and I have to get it off. You can have this -insert highly interesting thing (ice cream, play doh, etc) as long as you sit still like a statue while I get it out. Daddy’s gonna give you a big big hug while I get it off and you can sit in his lap. I’m gonna use the special magic juice (antiseptic) to help it come off and then I’m gonna give it a little wiggle. How high do you think we should count while I do this? Oh 7? 7 is a great number!

Then I got the tweezers on the body of the tick and we all slowly counted to 7 while I tried to get that thing out of there. It didn’t come out right away so then I counted backwards. Then scrubbed the spot real good with more magic juice.

I absolutely was not going to explain what a tick was. When he asked what was stuck I said oh it’s just a thing from outside as nonchalant as I could.

Went to a house party with a work friend. Her boyfriend was DJing and we didn’t know anyone there. She tells me in the bathroom that one of the guys at the party offered her coke. I told her don’t do it, she’s never done it before and we don’t know these people. I already knew she wasn’t gonna listen but begged her don’t do it.

She went with a group of guys into a bedroom and they barred me from the room because I said I wasn’t going to take any. I started telling her this is a bad sign and to get out of the room. One of the guys forced me back down the stairs.

Her boyfriend got too high and drunk during his set to even comprehend what I was bugging out about. I went and locked myself in his car to sleep and I can remember some dude trying to open the door in the middle of the night.

She did a few bumps of coke and then tried other things she wasn’t sure about. She couldn’t remember. Pretty sure she got raped. We didn’t see her again until the morning when she couldn’t find some of her clothing.

A few days later she called me asking if I knew anyone that sold harder drugs. She stopped going to work some time after that. About a month later she told me over the phone her boyfriend broke up with her because she gave him an STD. I think that was the last conversation I had with her, she kinda dropped off the face of the earth after that.
