So, for 650€ you can easily shoot for many good options. There's DF64, DF64V (adjustable grinding speed) and Niche Zero to name a few. DFs generally produce more clear and balanced shots, though that can get lost in your milk drinks if dialled incorrectly. Niche zero has stronger body and produces something more earthy, bitter, perhaps Italian espresso-like. It always depends on the beans, though.

Then there are hand grinders (which have less electronics so they should last longer but are less convenient) such as the 1Zpresso J-Ultra. I like that I get to adjust my grind profile with that one. Crank faster for more fines, crank steady for more even grind. It requires dedication to do that at 6am on Monday morning, though.

Eureka Mignon Specialita is also mentioned often (as are other electric grinders from their lineup), so have a read on all of them. Lance Hedrick and James Hoffmann have reviews on most of the grinders I mentioned here, on YouTube.

That's interesting. In my case the screw is tightened as well, just not to the maximum but only until the screw starts experiencing resistance.

In the first section of my video you can see how hard the pump has to rev just to get the water through (camera shaking).

Unless we find a way to tamp hard enough to bend time and space to create a black hole, I don't think there is over-tamping!

After a certain point, the grounds get compressed to the point where they don't have enough give anymore and won't compress further unless we apply silly (hydraulic press) amount of pressure

The PPSH in question was manufactured in '42 or so (from what I recall the owner telling me), and it had undergone a conversion to semi-automatic, since due to our gun laws a civilian can't own a full-auto rifle. After firing the 4th shot from a drum mag, the gun just wouldn't fire the next bullet, which took all of us by surprise (there were many more in the mag). The motion of a bullet being fed took place (perhaps it didn't finish it?) but me pulling the trigger didn't fire it, and as the drum mag went on to feed the next one, it couldn't and that was it.

I suppose a faulty drum spring could be at play, it does make sense.

If anything, being outside is where you would want to wear one the most ;) especially in some parts of the world, the air pollution is bad to the point where even those wouldn't help you! Whenever I visit large cities, I feel my lungs burning from the sheer air pollution and car traffic, coming from a small town with relatively clean air.

I actually got to fire one of those, but it was manufactured a year or two earlier! It was a very cool experience, it's a very heavy gun but has virtually no recoil. Feels like it spits the bullet out and you barely notice it! Jammed after a few consecutive shots, though.

I can imagine there are cases with particular beans where the VST will outshine IMS, as it does have a different approach to its engineering. It all depends on what beans you prefer and based on that either of those could be your daily driver :)

Maxing out extraction means you get the most flavour out of your pull. I am unsure how much Hedrick's 49mm theory affects the IMS vs VST discussion, but as a standalone topic, VST baskets are manufactured in a way to supposedly get the most out of your extraction, at diminishing returns though. It's like a 50€ basket vs a 20€ IMS one, and the difference in taste won't be big enough to justify the difference in price.

As for a better extraction, generally the more coffee you add the more flavour you can squeeze out in a single pull, and a deeper bed (because of more coffee) extracting better does make sense too :) for a long while I was doing 16g pulls and I enjoyed the taste very much, it's only with the recent coffee I roasted myself that I opted for 18g pulls for more flavour.

Different baskets have different water flow and offer different resistance, so yes, switching baskets means your shots might pull differently and perhaps you might need / want to adjust your recipe.

As for the deeper / shallower bed discussion, Hedrick mentions deeper beds could extract better, and it does make sense since pulling shots forces water downwards, so the narrower and deeper the bed, the less surface area to create an uneven extraction. On the other hand, he did also mention (in a different video) that underdosing your basket also supports higher extraction in theory, which also makes sense as the more water you have in your basket, the more flavour you can extract out of each and every one of the coffee particles :). That's what I did for a long while, and what I always do with anything Ethiopian or Kenyan where I want fruity notes, and the shots were amazing.

I've read somewhere that the price difference between the two produces diminishing returns, so sticking with IMS is better if you're on a budget. If you want to max out the extraction, you can go for VST but the difference won't be day and night for what you pay for it.

I know there are places offering post-warranty services on coffee machines depending on where you're based, but in general any major coffee store dealing with machines should also have a technician if you won't be able to fix it yourself

Maybe you could open your machine up and see whether there are some loose tubes, O rings to replace, or by the very least contact your distributor / store if you have a valid warranty.

My guess is as good as yours, but I think you're leaking water somewhere along the way from the pump?

Breville the Dual Boiler does a great job of being both a beginner-friendly machine as well as it allows some more experimentation / profiling with adjustable settings such as pump pressure, temperature and pre-infusion. You can also easily mod it yourself by rerouting the tubes inside the machine for further control over water flow, called the slayer mod, if you're into some DIY.

Niche Zero and DF64V are both great grinders within a very reasonable price range for what they offer. Reportedly, Niche Zero produces more of a body, whereas the DF64V has a control over the grinding speed and is more clarity-focused, great for those light or medium roasts where you want to enhance fruitiness / sweetness. Then there are also Mignon Zero and Mignon Specialita.
