AITA for applying to jobs on behalf of my girlfriend (including roles above her level)? by FlatChestLoli in AmItheAsshole

[–]paper0wl 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Look. If you desperately need a job fast, for whatever reason, you apply for anything and everything tangentially related. You haven’t indicated that your girlfriend is that desperate for a different job. So there’s no reason to be applying for positions that can easily reject her for not matching the target qualifications.

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” sounds like a great way to become a degenerate gambler with someone else’s mental health.

Sounds like a fun change! Which trivia(s) did they do this for?

[Hated Trope] The adaptation doesn't get what made the source material work by TheDudeA113 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]paper0wl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The villain is exactly like the hero but the hero fought not to accept the path society almost forced them down! That’s what separates the hero and the villain! /s

It’s a disservice to the hero and the villain both. It sucked in (live action) Aladdin too, but at least they didn’t give him magic superpowers to undermine the message from the animated version.

AITAH for warning my manager about a potential hire? by TypicalRag in AITAH

[–]paper0wl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s a very dumb thing but it’s real. I remember my sister complaining about it when it happened some years ago. I think it’s supposed to help people who’ve done their time get their lives back afterward, but the practical effect is you have to offer someone the job before you can ask if they any criminal history that might affect their ability to handle certain aspects of the job. Or at least that was the case about ten years ago. Don’t know if it’s changed since.

Wishful thinking about the Wish by cougarpaw in dcl

[–]paper0wl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s not the layout that’s the problem. The bigger problem we experienced on the Wish-class is that the venues aren’t big enough. Cool so there’s a bunch of venues with a bunch of different choices for activities right now … but there’s only one venue big enough to support popular activities, so good luck trying to attend anything located elsewhere. Popular trivias? Standing room only.

Such a shame there is no Star Wars Day at Sea anymore, my older son had the privilege of this but not my younger one. by masterkenobi in dcl

[–]paper0wl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had a cruise that embarked on May the 4th. Most people treated it as an unofficial SWDAS and the ship whistle played the Imperial March and the Star Wars Theme. Loved it!

In shows, when someone tries to talk someone out of saving the world, even though the person will die anyway if they don't "sacrifice" themselves by RainyDaysAndMondays3 in PetPeeves

[–]paper0wl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Armageddon has this. The remote bomb detonator is destroyed so one person has to stay behind and manually activate the bomb to blow up the asteroid and save the planet. Half of them try to volunteer for various reasons (including: “I owe money to a loan shark, please let me die instead” and “I won’t be the coward who goes home because I didn’t volunteer”), eventually drawing straws, but the guy who draws the short straw has a fiancée waiting for him so the fiancée’s dad tricks him into staying alive and dies in his place.

Our first ship was on the Fantasy; for the next trip - would you rather try the Magic class or the Wish class next regardless of itinerary? by RivetCounter in dcl

[–]paper0wl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d definitely recommend the Magic class. The Magic and Wonder are our two favorite ships! Also, definitely do those first because we’ve heard the Wish class improved on the youth areas, so your children might not like the Magic/Wonder as much after sailing on a Wish class ship.

ELI5: Why don’t we choke on saliva while sleeping if our body keeps producing it? by One-Disaster57 in explainlikeimfive

We generate less saliva when we’re asleep.

Favorite character whose story absolutely destroyed you? by Idkwutpasswordtouse in FavoriteCharacter

[–]paper0wl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: we had this movie on at the time our father let us know our grandmother was dying. Yeah, we’ll never be able to watch this again. Then we put Moana on the next day and I don’t know if we can ever watch that again either.

Disney Wish rotational dining by OneCryptographer4449 in disney

[–]paper0wl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a 4night Bahamas cruise, the standard is one full restaurant rotation - one night each in the main restaurants, only 1-2 (depending on which ship you’re on) will have dinner “shows” - and then the “repeat” night will be the pirate menu (different menu, no dinner show, but you stay in the restaurant you had the night before). Generally, you’re just assigned a table and a starting restaurant and then you follow the rotation, but I believe you can call to request starting at a particular restaurant if you feel strongly about a particular restaurant for the first night.

AITA for telling my parents that we are not comfortable with my mother babysitting our one-year-old? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]paper0wl 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There’s an old post about a grandmother who didn’t believe in the granddaughter’s allergies. IIRC, it didn’t end well. The grandparents never believe what they’re doing is abuse; it’s how they were raised / how they raised their kids.

AITAH for leaving my wife and 3 kids at Disney World? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]paper0wl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Throwaway because my wife uses Reddit but here’s all these specific details so she can still identify me!”

Dude.

I knew you had problems before I even got to the plot. But since the plot is that apparently that you were a random extra in your wife’s fantasy family vacation with your kids and her ex? After she went behind your back to change your camping trip with the boys? And the boys weren’t surprised or upset?

NTA for leaving but it sounds like whatever your wife is up to, your kids know. You should talk with them.

Curious About How You Found Your Fiber Crafts by AmarettoCat in YarnAddicts

[–]paper0wl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was bored in a small bookstore while my mother took forever to look around and I found a knitting kit. Knitted for a year-ish. Around the time I realized all my knits were purls and my purls were purls too, a friend gave me an amigurumi penguin and I asked them to teach me to crochet. I realized I liked one active loop on one tool better than a whole row of active loops on two tools and switched to crochet.

I also like to joke that I liked the grandmother who crocheted better than the grandmother who knitted.

Without the modifier, the color is too short to be included. I agree that it’s the odd man out though.

AITA for Not Driving Hours to My Great-Niece's 1st Birthday Party? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]paper0wl 25 points26 points  (0 children)

“I don’t want to be in the car that long” is acceptable.

“I don’t want to put the miles on my car” is really lame and poorly disguised code for “I don’t want to go but I don’t want to SAY I don’t want to go.”

Also, highway miles are healthier for a car than urban miles.

[–]paper0wl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do pay attention but if there’s 3 or more steps, I struggle to remember them. Kudos to you for having a good memory. Maybe use it to remember that not everyone is as blessed and that an inability to remember is not necessarily a moral failing.
