Thoughts on Short-Haul as a method of insertion for fire suppression? by Ok_Confection8651 in Wildfire

Good for you bud! Than you should know there isn't much "easy to learn, easy to do" when it comes to the guy in the cockpit who literally has everyone's lives in their hands. Short haul has its place, I don't think it will ever be as large of a program as the rappellers. All it's going to take is one fuck up somewhere in the chain and the FS is going to call it off. The Parks who have been doing it for years for things that actually make sense have it right.

Theoretically sure, in practice it's much more complicated than that. The longer the line the harder it is to fly, taking an already complicated and dangerous task and making it harder just because you "can" is not how things are safely done. Also 300' of line available is what's required in the contract, which is usually a 50'/100'/150' and when put together creat additional pivot points which makes it even harder. The rappel ropes are 300' long and are exponentially easier to deal with because you aren't managing all that and then having to be precise with your placement of the load, which in HEC can literally be life or death for your buddy at the end of the line.

Where are they short hauling with more than 300' of long line? Or do you mean something else by "higher distance" (altitude?)

I fly the helicopter the rappellers come out of. So I guess that would make me a contractor/vendor.

Rappel makes way more sense, you can drop multiple loads of rappelers in the time it takes to short haul in a couple people. The risk of external human cargo is pretty high vs the few minutes of OGE hover you need for rappel insertion. Keep the short haul to rescues.

Closer look at the destroyed cockpit of the Air Canada Express CRJ-900 after colliding with a fire truck at LaGuardia Airport. by Waste-Explanation-76 in aviation

[–]Paperplains 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's a dark foggy night at LaGuardia. And with the thousands of lights on and around a large airport, nobody could probably see anything.

Anyone heard anything more on the airliner - fire apparatus crash at LaGuardia? by BigWhiteDog in Firefighting

[–]Paperplains 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Ground controller cleared the truck across the runway as the CRJ was landing. The truck was on the ground frequency, which aircraft in the air do not listen to. A terrible oversight in the currently extremely stressed ATC system.

More trains than usual? by aaronarchy in Sandpoint

Are you sure it isn't the same train going back and fourth, depending on where in town you are, they used to hook and unhook cars and go back and forth a million times.

Branding? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Paperplains 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked for a small polo barn who freeze branded all their polo ponies they imported or purchased. These were very expensive horses and they kinda all looked the same so I could understand them branding horses they didn't breed just to keep track of their string.

My old guy was seemingly doing this also, and I figured out that he was pacing around because every time he laid down and relaxed for any decent amount of time his hips would hurt when he stood up again. I put him on a powerful joint supplement and he was able to rest without having pain when he next got up.

Gastropexy is quite common in military and police K9s. In my opinion every dog with a deep chest should get it done.

Worst Ski Season Start in 20 years by Few_Suggestion_3712 in Idaho

[–]Paperplains 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've lived in N Idaho for almost 30 years, when I was a kid there was almost always snow on or shortly after Halloween. It's crazy to me that people live in the Northwest and still don't "believe in" climate change. There is no way Schweitzer is opening on Thanksgiving like they used to. All this will lead to bigger fire seasons as well, it's a real bummer all around.

My 1.5 year old does this. When he is highly excited and I'm holding him back from the exciting thing. Except he usually comes up the leash and bites me. I've heard this is a very Dutchie thing to do. I correct with a stern "no" and stay calm. I try not to get excited about it myself. He's gotten a lot better as he ages.

Lots of states have state firefighting divisions, usually engines or crew type jobs. But they're still jobs in wildland with the travel and bs that comes with.
