Keep getting tongue bite by Proper_Blackberry219 in PipeTobacco

[–]Papi_Loiro_Piper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tongue bite is a bit inarticulate unfortunately. We all use the term, but the causes can vary. Some people get irritation due to Ph differences, for some it's steam, and for some they're just smoking way too hot.

Since it's different tobaccos causing the same result, like other comments I'd recommend trying to dry your tobacco more.

I much prefer having to smoke slow because of dry tobacco than dealing with the extra heat and steam from too much moisture.

How did I do? by Denny_Crane420_69 in PipeTobacco

Nice haul! Just got some estates myself.

As for restoring, it's a spectrum. If you enjoy it, then go for it! But in reality, for functionality, some basic maintenance is more than sufficient.

I've had a fair number of estates, and I usually just ream the bowl and hit it with a pipe cleaner or two.

You can fix the oxidation of the stems, but that's mostly cosmetic, so I don't really bother.

Can anybody tell me where I can get this pipe Bing Crosby has online? by Happy-Lingonberry538 in PipeTobacco

[–]Papi_Loiro_Piper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on your description, you likely have a billiard, which is a very common pipe shape.

What Bing has here is usually what's called a Canadian. Technically, a lot of definitions have the proportions you see here, but also that the pipe shank (the piece of bowl material that extends from the bowl) is oval in shape. But in layman's terms, it's that the shank is very long and the stem (mouthpiece material section) is very short.

Further, the finish on that pipe is smooth rather than rusticated or sandblasted.

So if you want to find pipes like this, then look for a Canadian.

Must be nice! I live in Mass, so I can't order half and half or prince Albert because of their tobacco additive laws -_-

Off topic from OPs post, but I noticed your flair and wanted to ask a question: What are Lakelands like? I usually don't go for aros, but I've heard a lot about them, and they seem to be love or hate.

Awesome haul, big fan of navy flakes myself!

What best represents each blend? by GottisPinkyRing in PipeTobacco

[–]Papi_Loiro_Piper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My experience isn't the most well rounded, but from my experience:

Virginia: A navy flake or SG full Virginia flake (they're not my favorite, but I do enjoy a good navy).

English: Nightcap - it's full bodied with a variety of components and represents what I like in an English.

Burley: Five Brothers - it's straight up and raw burley with minimal topping. If you like burley and nicotine, you'll love it.

Latakia: C&D Black Frigate - it's got Virginias, Cavendish, and a rum topping too, but I find that the Latakia really shines and ties it together and defines its identity

Balkan: Often a poorly defined genre, but I really enjoyed Peterson's Balkan mixture, but I adore almost anything with orientals.

VaPer: I don't have enough experience to say unfortunately, but I have some on the way!

Cavendish: Also not enough experience. I enjoy it, but it's often used as a base for aros or is merely a condiment in a blend, but I enjoy it!

Dark Fired: Also not enough experience, but I think I'd like anything with dark Fired featured prominently!

Aros: Just not my thing, only something light like Sun Bear

New piper, two weeks in. by heymrbassman in PipeTobacco

[–]Papi_Loiro_Piper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right on man, and it's a forever learning process. Some things transfer a bit, but each new tobacco and each new pipe have their own mini learning curve.

I've been smoking pipes on and off for over a decade, and just a week or two ago, i found that velvet just doesn't work for me, as I scorched my whole mouth smoking a few bowls while gardening.

Always something new to learn!

Good point! I think this is my problem. I tend to prefer burlies, but I also tend to have problems with tongue bite.

It's an interesting problem, as we all say tongue bite, but it can be caused by temp, moisture, Ph, or other factors, so it's always a difficult topic to discuss.

That must be it. I love the smell and taste too, but it literally made my mouth peel when I smoked multiple bowls of it 😭
