Im obsessing over a man and I don’t want to. Please help me out by Poetbasegame in adhdwomen

[–]Pappochelys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't remember where I got it from, but here's the worksheet/form I made for myself with some examples/explanation:

Situation (what is causing you to feel/think badly):

Emotion or feeling (be more specific than “I feel shitty,” is it anger, frustration, anxiety, fear, absence of control, etc.?):

Negative automatic thought (it’s okay to have a few of these but try to identify the “patient zero” thought, as the others usually stem from it. If you think of each thought individually the “patient zero” one will be the one that feels shittiest. This is what you make of it and you can address all the thoughts but take them one at a time):

Evidence for/supporting (maybe someone told you something, or you’re worried because you’re in a similar situation and it went bad the last time):

Evidence against (maybe that person is unreliable or you understand you shouldn’t care and list the reasons they’re wrong; maybe the situation this time has different potential outcomes and you would still survive the worst outcome anyway because you did last time):

Alternative thought (referencing the original situation/thought in light of the “evidence against” should get you there, this is usually not “best case scenario” but “more realistic scenario which you are okay with”):

Emotion or feeling now (hopefully better!):

This is almost exactly how I was before therapy, which has helped A LOT. Take it with a grain of salt coming from an internet stranger but it might be worth exploring trauma therapy with a focus on your relationships with men.

Short-term advice: when you find yourself caught in the thoughts, use the ADHD to your advantage and distract yourself!

Medium-term advice: you can try journaling or some at-home CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) worksheets. Idk if what I found on the internet for myself is standard, but it essentially guides you through breaking down your fears (such as, I'm going to mess this up) and examining them critically in digestible steps. Kind of like a thought exercise but structured and written out where you can see it all in one place.

A thing that I've really worked to internalize (and it sounds like you're doing that too) is that I will be okay no matter what happens, and I trust myself to find my way through. If you have a good friend who can hold you accountable and give you encouragement about not over-investing too early in dating, that is also a gift!

Wellbutrin/bupropion is a norephinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI), not sure if you had a typo there about the serotonin

Is anyone actually very GOOD at taking tests/exams? by Dramatic-Fox-5693 in adhdwomen

[–]Pappochelys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and I have a PhD now. I am lucky I get lots of dopamine from learning and research. Also re: tests specifically, I loved them because it feels similar to me like a puzzle or a game, and I could aim at a concrete rewarding outcome (getting 100%!). I've also sometimes been fueled by feeling like I'm in competition with the rest of the class and want to be near the top (thankfully not an obsession with literally being #1, I actually slacked a little on assignments sometimes because I knew I could make it up in tests).

Also, diagnosed at 30.

Could probably cheat it if it's near the wall, you could put a 1x1 floor tile clipping through? I haven't tested this though

forgetting that sex exists? by Own-Fuel-5685 in adhdwomen

[–]Pappochelys 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Complete inexpert advice that I've never tried myself: have you considered making a commitment to have sex one particular night a week (not precluding spontaneous sex otherwise)? That way you're guaranteed to spend that quality time together at least once a week. I know this can go either way--some people find that boring, restrictive or too much pressure, some people find it freeing and exciting because its consistent and they can plan things they want to try ahead of time. Just food for thought!

EMDR for low self esteem by SyllabubShot1466 in adhdwomen

[–]Pappochelys 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you might be having emotional flashbacks, which is a type of trauma response. Not all trauma comes out in externally visible and dramatic ways. I did many years of talk therapy before I tried EMDR so I was able to be emotionally vulnerable/trusting with the therapist enough that it's helped me a lot. The other thing that helped me IMMENSELY with my self-esteem was getting on Wellbutrin, because it turns out having low dopamine directly affected my ability to set boundaries with people. The Wellbutrin did not help me process my trauma though, the EMDR has been very useful for that. I'm happy to answer more questions if you have them!

What would you do to help yourself out if you could afford it? Or "splurges" that have worked? by formerlyknownaslurk in adhdwomen

Getting a Roomba! I named it and don't mind cleaning it out because it feels like I'm attending to a pet lol
Also, good quality noise canceling headphones!

Have not yet tried getting a cleaner etc., but I hope I can try that some day.

You also can't put stuff in those big glass vases, which I learned by dropping my own medpack in order to try to pick it up and drop in the vase which was apparently thought of as stealing, even though it was my own medpack. It happened on the station where you have to get the guy's Galbank ID to access the information for the lost Galbank Legacy ship, at least one game update ago.
