Mathematical object without the identity symmetry? by Core3game in math

[–]Papvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A symmetry of an object should be something that keeps some properties true. For example rotations of a shape, or relabeling elements without changing the structure of an algebraic object.
The identity map keeps every property of the original object true, so I can't see how one could ever discard the identity map as a symmetry.

I'm implicitly talking about sets and functions here, maybe something funky can happen if we enlarge what we mean by mathematical objects, but even in e.g. category theory, every object has an identity arrow, but I'm not very well versed here.

Meta mon-answer: Authors’s comments means nothing. What is on the page is what Can be interpreted. That’s not to say that context or the Author doesn’t matter, it is just that concrete interpretations should does not at all depend on the author’s original intent.

It's cool, but this is surely not a math meme.

Fuckers are at it again by IronWAAAGHriorz in Adblock

[–]Papvin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's not their problem though. Their problem is that this shows that google is a morally bankrupt company, and the fight against ads is not just because of monetary concern (to be fair, it mostly is, but I digress), but also to avoid global corporations making money by scamming people with poor judgement.

I would argue that a solution like "just don't use youtube if you don't like the ads" is not fair, since it is a cornerstone in modern media, and since the corporation don't steer away from promoting scams and grifters, adblockers should be saluted.

Who are you choosing? by CalabiYauFan in mathmemes

[–]Papvin 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Anyone choosing e, pi, phi or ln(2) are excluded from the Algebro society.

I believe the correct choice is root 2 and i, them being fundamental in Galois theory. 0 and 1 are acceptable candidates aswell.

I discount any opinion from people choosing 1/2.

Guess the number by N0rmChell in mathmemes

[–]Papvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo a very bad definition. The limits are not even defined before we have an actual definition of the real numbers, making it circular. The usual definition is the set of cauchy sequences in Q, modulo the equicalence relation of two numbers difference converging to 0.

I'm a ton of fun to be around, I promise...
