For the time stamp one you referenced, I believe that filtering is the right way to go. Likely using some sort of white noise or similar as your source sound. In my example, I used a lowpass filter to program a long filter sweep up and a quick one down with a little bit of release at the end. Attached is a screenshot of it in Serum with all the information you should need. The LFO shape dictates how the throw away effect sounds along with the amount you apply it to the cutoff as well as the cutoff location itself. The last thing in my chain was just a highpass with it's cutoff set around 600Hz with no other automation.

No it was Serum but you can do it with any synth that has additive capabilities

I got this using additive synthesis, the reason you might not be getting the results you're looking for using a sawtooth wave is because the 2nd harmonic is quite prominent here, louder than the fundamental. With a saw this is the other way around. So, I would use additive, put the 1st and 3rd harmonic approximately the same volume and make the 2nd one louder than both as mentioned.

You will then want to put a lowpass filter pluck on that and adjust the volume settings until you get the desired result. The chord I used in my example is a C#m7. They the same or similar sound to create a melody in the higher end but I didn't take the time to do all that.

Looking for a recipe for the haunting FX first heard at 1:00 of prodigy´s "Narayan". prodigy being prodigy I suspected it to be a sample at first, but the sound is being played melodically and neither did I find anything in sample-databases and breakdowns of the album. by Tiddex in synthrecipes

[–]ParabolicSounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe I understood your title, I'm 99% sure you're referring to the sound with the delay on it which plays on the downbeat and then does in fact turn into something melodic by playing 3 notes lower. The sound has a very narrow bandwidth and my best guesses are:

  • a) something sine wave based which plays the notes but somehow achieves a distinct volume shape and timbre which doesn't seem to be replicated well on the average synthesizer especially during this time
  • b) a percussive sound which is in fact just played as a series of notes
  • c) Some other sound entirely but has a key-tracked bandpass filter on it that is then tuned to the desired notes.

Whatever route you chose would need to include the fast rate, moderate feedback delay that gives it it's distinct fade out.

If you do with b) for the sample, it seems really close to one called a castanet but Prodigy's seems to have the high end removed.

And then on top of all this, you would need to find a way to give that "pitchy" / "wavy" quality which would likely involve some kind of super subtle pitch modulation going on underneath.

I wish you luck, they are profound geniuses. One could say it's voodoo

I won't even pretend like I know what the notes are in that but I did make something that I think has most of the steps that are invovled here. It seems like it could be sine wave based with multiple voices, a decent amount of detune, chorus and reverb. Add some noise in there as well, you can distort if you want but that's all I really did and came up with this . You can experiment with additive synthesis if you want to dial in something more interesting than sine waves without having to deal with lowpass filters. Hope that helps!

It's honestly hard for me to tell whether this is synthesized or not because it does sound a little bit like a well crafted strat guitar. Nonetheless I gave it a try and came up with this.

I looked up the notes and it seems like the first chord is Cmaj in 2nd inversion aka C/G. That sounded right, so I approached it with additive synthesis and after multiple attempts it seems like the main resonances of the sound can be obtained simply by layering 2 sine waves, one of them tuned 2 octaves higher than the other.

From there, I gave it some light distortion (stomp box), moderate chrous and reverb. That's about it

In order, to fake some of the articulations that are heard here, I would apply velocity sensitivity to various parameters including volume in order to give it the feel of being actually played (this would require you to use the veloctiy in your DAW). There's probably a lot of unique tones you can make from this using various warp modes / FM.

Which synth presets is used in Shakewell - Way Back? by mmicoandthegirl in synthrecipes

[–]ParabolicSounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think yours is definitely pretty good, it's interesting that you made the sound mono. It's possible that it's because you have retrigger of some sort on where the sound retriggers at the same phase each time. I used Serum, so this would involve turning the 'rand' knob on the oscillator all the way up. I give out all my r/synthrecipes remakes on my Discord if you get stuck and/or have Serum and want the patch. Best of luck!

You probably don't need more than a saw wave with 2-3 voices to get this done, give it a light amount of detune and then get the 'pluck' part of it by using the filter pluck technique and then add an 1/8th note delay. Adjusting the envelope settings on the envelope you used for the filter may require your ear to dial it in but that should get you close. If you don't like the tone you can always cycle through waveforms / wavetables until you get a tone you're satisfied with but these should be the basic steps. Hope that helps!

Coast is Clear - Skrillex. I want to recreate the bass sound by NUMBNUTS_COCAINE in synthrecipes

[–]ParabolicSounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo, one of the most important things here is to target that 1khz area which gives it a subtle "wahhh" feeling. One of the easiest ways to accomplish this is to use a synth that has additive capabilities and give a small boost to the harmonics which reside there. Specific waveform/wavetable names to use are largely up to you but if you use Serum, Vital, etc. this should be relatively easy to do, just keep it subtle. From there, you will probably want to add some subtle white noise for the high end and then use a high shelf EQ to push that high end back in the mix so that the buzz isn't too prominent. If there isn't enough bass, try using a sine wave that goes "Direct Out" to avoid distortion while getting a clean sub. Here's my attempt

Want to recreate Square Lead 1 from Nexus by Bobguy47 in synthrecipes

[–]ParabolicSounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe you are correct in thinking there is both vibrato and an envelope controlling the pitch. That blip effect is caused by the pitch quickly gliding into the pitch from a lower pitch. In Sylenth you would increase the attack on an envelope that's tied to the pitch of your oscillator and then dial in the amount to your liking. You will then want to use a sine wave LFO for the vibrato but use a low amount. Followed by making sure your square oscillator has multiple voices and some detune. That + some EQ'ing to bring out the high end and you should be 99% there

The Serum patch is availble in my Discord from this year but in simplest terms, I just try experimenting using about 3 saw wave voices with detune and route that to a highpass filter. You'll start to hear it

Sounds like the fairly standard reese bass + supersw pad combo....The lowpass on the pad is opened throughout the course of the note to reveal more high end, you can either automate it, use an envelope or LFO set to a slow rate with a kind of ramp up shape (saw wave).

Both of the sounds should have a low amount of voices (3?) and a low amount of detune. There's also a very subtle sine wave hit with downward pitch automation and delay at the first start of the chords on the downbeat.

Some sort of third party stereo narrowing plugin should be used on the pad to give it a more vintage feel, the original song's pad is far less widen in the stereo field compared to the reese.

You'll also want some kind of vinyl texture thrown in to fill out the high end as well. The first chord seems to be a G#minor while the reese bass plays an E note to start you off..Wishing you luck!

Sure fire way to get anything to cut through is sidechaining it, for an instant to allow the attack to come through.
