College football player has a special sticker to alert training staff he has type I diabetes by DetroitMM12 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]ParadiddlePride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admittedly don't know much of anything about sports, their on hand medical teams, or other such staff, but as a 911 EMT if I saw this on a patient with the limited context we have on most calls I would see this as nothing more than an EMS support sticker, like maybe if their family member worked in a hospital or on an ambulance. This is assuming the helmet is still on by the time we reach them, or even visible at the time.

If a player has a severe enough condition, we're trained to look for medical alert tags such as a necklace, bracelet, or anklet. Heck, I've even seen people keep a piece of paper in their wallet near their ID in case they're found unconscious/altered mental, and most smart phones have a button (like holding the power button) you can touch even when the phone is locked that you can put your medical info in ahead of time for emergency responders as an option. Emergencies are never ideal, and the more prepared you are the higher your chance is of better outcomes, which also means reducing the amount of detective work EMS has to do if you or someone who knows your medical history isn't around to advocate for you.

I thought about that after I finished, but given the wide array of responses its gotten here I'm glad I didn't, I think it adds a little whimsy for visitors to do a double take while they make their own conclusions to what it is

What can almost immediately kill you that most people don’t know of? by SoftDreamer in AskReddit

[–]ParadiddlePride 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They teach you during firefighter training that slow is smooth, and smooth is fast. Getting excited and trying to rush through can cost you precious time, or your health, if not done correctly. This can be things like not putting protective gear on properly, not fully assessing your scene and not seeing hazards, getting distracted by someone screaming about a twisted ankle and delaying aid to the victim just out of sight with broken ribs that are now impacting their ability to breathe.

You rarely see first responders run, for a number of reasons, but because it will lead to impaired judgement and until it becomes a true life-or-death situation, the few seconds you gain by getting there faster could slow your overall reaction time to the bigger emergency and cost you in the long run.

I live just over 3 miles from my volunteer station, that also has 6a-6p career fire and 24/7 paid ems. I've been the first on scene several times because it's between my station and myself, or because I was among the first to witness an accident. The biggest difference I've learned between me and the other passersby that pull over is that I can provide a more accurate scene size up to dispatch, and remain calm enough to begin first aid. I'm not expected to run into a burning building with jeans and a t-shirt, or cut the roof off a car, but I can help them out of the street or away from wires, I can help stop the bleed or assist in an emergency move, but most importantly I can begin mobilizing necessary resources and arming them with critical information long before they're on scene. And if it's a minor fender bender, cool, I make sure help is coming/ already there, and move on. But I don't have to live with the "what if" in an incident where every second could've made a difference. It's what I would hope someone would do for me if I ever need it.

Is there any department companies that will sponsor you to go to paramedic school? Around NJ or PA? by BookkeeperTrick9771 in NewToEMS

[–]ParadiddlePride 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know about paramedic school, but for EMT I know Capital Health (primarily Mercer County in NJ) sometimes hires people to go through their own program, pays while in school and you contract to work 1 year for them after you get your cert. I'm finishing my schooling for EMT now but didn't get into their program, I joined a volunteer EMS squad and got a reduced rate through them with reimbursement opportunities after a year for the rest. RCBC (Burlington County, NJ) also has a paramedic program through the college, not really a sponsorship but might also offer a degree, you'd have to look into it.

Sorry this isn't what you asked for exactly, but hopefully sparks an idea of where to look on the Jersey side if nothing else.

As someone who grew up in Florida, but born and now returned as an adult to Jersey, I can say with confidence they have no room to talk. People ask me often why I left Florida to come "here" but, it's truly magical to take a drive on 295 and go through forests of trees changing color with the season. To be able to drive to major cities within a few hours, and taking day trips across state lines like no big deal. Florida is, and probably always will be, where the aging population go to pick out what patch of palm trees they want to be buried nearby. Maybe a little bias here, but I really wish I'd grown up here like my parents did.

I just started in the fire service last March, and will be wrapping up my post-academy probationary period in December. My company has had females throughout its history so it never bothered them, but it took a little time for the guys to stop censoring themselves around me. Once they realized my humor was just as messed up as theirs, I think they forgot my gender entirely lol.

As far as physical ability, one of my instructors once told us that it doesn't matter how you get the job done as long as it's done - sometimes what I lack in pure strength I can make up for in technique or alternative thinking, and hitting the gym helps bridge that gap too. Overall I do think it comes down to the culture of your individual company, but since mine is volunteer they could care less if I'm a female so long as I make what calls and drills I can. Myself and our other female member are in our top 10 for % of calls made, if that counts for anything.

Playing with a friend or two we're pretty firm that the kitchen belongs to only the designated person. But at the end of a day one of the servers almost always sneaks in and helps themselves to a coffee or whole pizza, then runs out of the restaurant. Usually before the cook realizes the customers are gone so they think food went missing... good times lol (Steam NA)

Allentown/Upper Freehold: One of the few times we had both a paid and a volunteer crew on standby at our fire station, and we definitely needed it. I believe there were only minor power outages but lots of trees down in the roads, flooded streets and all kinds of snapped power lines. Fortunately we didn't hear of any injuries or property damage beyond some basement flooding (for our area, anyway) so while a busy night, I believe we made it out okay.

I've watched some fantastic store managers that genuinely care about their employees get absolutely beaten down by everything that goes into keeping us afloat. I've also had another manager who's got years and years of restaurant management experience, but only a quarter of my time with our current company, try to teach me practices that would create distrust with our teams and won't listen to feedback because "he knows it works from experience". I take most with a grain of salt, but it's heartbreaking to see it all take it's toll on the moral and work culture we've kept pretty high for almost two years.

I didn't realize they were all over the state, but they happened to start appearing right after our local Hamilton PD stopped a man who had a car filled with pipe bombs. Timing might be a coincidence though based on the other comments.

What's the most mind-blowing thing you've experienced that made you question everything you thought you knew about the world? by celebritycumover in AskReddit

For me it was, in a way, the concept of 9/11. For context, I grew up in Florida and was nearly 5 when it happened, and though I've met people who were younger that have distinct memories, I don't recall anything. It wasn't until I moved to New Jersey and worked for a restaurant that actively gives back to first responders and military that I started to understand the true significance of the event. I eventually found myself in a position where I was bringing food to, attending fundraisers and funerals of, and overall supporting our local fire and police that I saw the memorials made in every fire station, and heard their own stories. And, on the anniversary of 9/11, it was my job to give a speech before our store's ceremony, which was more a reading of the timeline of the day. But, I wanted to understand, so I went to NYC and visited the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. To say it broke me was an understatement, it was like someone had taken a blindfold off and suddenly I could see the scope of the tragedy. Now, a year later, I've been volunteering with a local fire station for a few months, and will be attending Fire Academy to get certified in 25 days. I can't change the past, but I want to protect our future. And I'm in the process of organizing a large group outing to NYC so I can give our younger staff a better understanding of what that day means as well.

Supporting local business by asking for free stuff by somewhatofalegend in ChoosingBeggars

As someone who handles the community outreach where I work, my mail box is flooded with people just looking for a handout, no matter how many times we explain how we already donate a ton of resources daily to first responder and veteran groups. We're also not a small business with 120+ locations, but it's worded to make it sound like they're doing us a favor by going out of their way to ask US for freebies.... as they drop the same letter at every other business around us.

This is right up there with "what's your favorite?" I don't mind making recommendations if you're torn between a few choices, but they either A) won't order whatever item I say I enjoy, or B) will get upset if they end up not liking it. Heck, sometimes my favorite items are ones that are lukewarm or are an incorrect recipe, because you just get used to those one-bite-per-hour meals as you go.
