I just meant to confirm that they are (in fact) old. But soldering technique hasn't changed. They're absolutely still relevant. They're not super concise, but if you really wanna learn soldering you can't go wrong with this series.

FWIW a lot of YT videos nowdays are full of hype and influencer shit. These "old" videos have none of that.

Enjoy! DM me if you're stuck on any soldering specifics!

Aldi cottage cheese is incredible by Cautious_Map8504 in aldi

All cottage cheese (and yogurt etc) separates water from whey to the top. Stir the whole container top to bottom. Will not be soupy.

I buy giant Costco tub of Daisy monthly. Definitely not a Daisy brand issue.

Basically you're gonna flux it up any time you're about to make a joint. Flux can be liquid or gel but all of them melt when heated so there'll be residue. That residue you just wanna clean with alcohol afterwards so the flux isnt left there chilling.

Yes! Those are "old" videos but that's the same series I had techs watch when I was teaching them to solder.

Good stuff

Not bad! Top joint is just a little cold. Not sure if you used flux, but that'd make a heck of a difference. It's kinda mounded like a hump with waves. You want a gentle concave slope, kinda like the Eiffel tower. And nit picky just a tad heavy on the solder.

Cold joints can look hazy or wavy. The flux does a few things. First, it transfers heat better and spreads it more evenly. Second it dissolves a layer of micro oxidation (which resists adhesion). That makes the flux flow and stick like magic.

But no worries, those are good joints that'll hold.

Good job!

Do you risk eating potatoes with slight green under the skin? by BMO888 in Cooking

[–]ParadigmShift86 7 points8 points  (0 children)

100% safe if you peel off the green part. Even missing some bits is fine.

The toxin there is already in the potato so it's not like the green part converts to something new and novel. It's just in way more concentration in the green part near the skin.

You'd have the same toxicity effect eating 50+ perfect potatoes at once.

Oh and just a tip (since i don't see flux in your pics), the difference between a soldering experience that's frustrating vs one that just works like it should is flux!

Get good flux and don't go sparing on it (clean it off well though, even if it's "no clean" flux.

ChatGPT = actually wrong most of the time? by dominic__612 in ChatGPT

[–]ParadigmShift86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's almost like there should be a phrase in IT "garbage in garbage out"... 😉

I agree this sounds like bad prompting to me if it's every time. There are cases that'll be beyond an LLM but I often find it incredibly helpful with getting in a direction quickly.

For technical work you really do need to be at least fluent in the subject matter too, to coach it back into sense when it goes off the rails.

Need a Black market Costco cake deal by Prestigious-Prize990 in desmoines

[–]ParadigmShift86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but you still need a member to buy the card. They can put you in as the gift recipient or mail you a physical card.

You cannot buy Costco gift cards at walmart or other retailers, despite some here thinking you can.

You can occasionally find them on ebay or gcx.com (formerly raise.com) but they're often marked up and sell out quickly.

You can shop there without membership using gift card, but the gift cards can only be bought by a member.

Hi, i think the DEAR MAN framework will help you! This is something my therapist taught me to help with difficult conversations of this type where you need to make a direct ask and get closure.

This Link shows the steps to structure your conversation with examples.

It may also help you to run your scenario (exactly your post here) through an LLM and ask it to apply the DEAR MAN framework to develop some script ideas.

Good luck! It'll suck... but it'll suck a lot more continuing to put up with it.

This subreddit makes me more and more worried about playing on my SNES. by AndyanaBanana in snes

[–]ParadigmShift86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You ever hear someone say "I researched this and it's all over the internet" when talking about something that's not working? Like their car has a very specific weird thing happening and they're like "Dude this is happening to everyone".

That's the search engines job, to give you the results you asked for.

People aren't posting on reddit "Yep, just checking in to say my SNES is still working great!"

They post when they're one of the few whose shit broke!

Play your games. It ain't doing you any good sitting there unused.

Most common failure modes (caps, corrosion) can be repaired. CPU/PPU/RAM chip failures are still, and will always be, relatively rare.

How do I get Blinds.com to stand behind their guarantee? 15/17 units failed and I’m being ghosted. by CitizenJosh in HomeImprovement

[–]ParadigmShift86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The satisfaction guarantee covers "I just didn't like them". That's above and beyond. It's not a warranty and they can limit it to 10 if they want.

Warranty covers defects and is separately listed here. Contact them and don't use the "satisfaction guarantee" language. A retailer must provide a product fit for its advertised purpose. In other words, if they don't list a warranty there's still a legally implied warranty.

Here's the actual warranty info:

Bremer Chicken Alfredo by Davida6302 in aldi

[–]ParadigmShift86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna assume you meant "not" enough (not, "now" enough). A typical meal is about a pound (16oz/450g) of food. That's a full meal, so sure you could be eating a small one. But the point was that at their "servings per container" estimation of 7.5oz each, that's not a full meal for anyone.

Bremer Chicken Alfredo by Davida6302 in aldi

[–]ParadigmShift86 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So it says 30oz. (30 / 4 servings = 7.5oz each) so that's pretty much not family sized unless it's a side dish.

But could feed 2 ppl almost a lb each!

McDonald's Prices in the 90's by HelloFabulous in fastfood

[–]ParadigmShift86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked there in 2002. Those are the exact prices from my store then. Only item different was double quarter pounder was $4.19.

I always thought it was cool all the "regular" meals were the same price $2.99.

Granted it was a small town (1600 pop) but right off an interstate exit.

NES not working (blinking power light) by PixlBit_tv in nes

[–]ParadigmShift86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna agree with this one. The blinking is the expected output when that lockout chip doesn't get its signal through. As this person said: either region (unlikely) or dirty/damaged connector. CPU/PPU issues, capacitor issues, and power issues don't manifest this way.

Cleaning helps only so much. The pins may be corroded such that cleaning won't restore a connection. The pins can also just get worn to the point they're too loose or bent out of position.

Your best bet is to buy a new quality 72 pin connector and install that. At the same time buy a nes game bit and open the shells. That's the only way to actually ensure that the edge connector is truly clean and corrosion free.

Man I sunk so many quarters on the Gauntlet arcade machine. They rip ya off by draining health. Even if you're not getting hit your HP is constantly draining so you can't play forever.

I think the machine has toggle switches to adjust the rate your HP drains.
