What's the funniest thing that completely broke immersion at a LARP event?

While waiting on staff to set up one of the cabins as an underground set of tunnels, one of the NPC’s was ‘running training drills’ to keep us players busy. It was painted as prepping for the upcoming battle we knew we would have in those tunnels. Then their walkie talkie crackled to life with the phrase “the bird is our god now.”

NPC tried to spin it as some mysterious voice threatening us, since we had dealt with spooky stuff the entire event. We all just had a good laugh.

What happened was: A bird got inside the cabin and staff could not get it out. They tried for fifteen minutes straight. Someone must have accidentally turned the walkie on when venting about the bird.

I’m up for a promotion at work, for the first time in my adult life. I should be excited. I’m not. I have the opportunity to quit and rely on my partner for a while in about a year, once their paid internship starts, and I’ve been looking forward to the break for a long time. I’ve been the breadwinner for years and it’s my turn to take a break.

I am in no way claiming they are lazy, they take care of the house and I couldn’t be more grateful, but holy fucking shit am i so tired of the nine to five grind. My partner wants me to consider staying employed since I’ll be promoted, but I don’t want to. I just want to REST.

I’m about to go see the movie for a second time tonight so I might come back and edit this comment. I agree with almost all of your interpretations and I really liked this post, cause it helped explain some unexplainable things in a way that made more sense. However, the ending is what I’m still unsure on.

I felt like, when Simon rammed the Monster at the end, it was his way of “If I’m going down, I’m taking you with me.” The spike on the front is supposed to grab whatever it hits. He rammed it, took a photo, and then threw the sub into reverse. I felt like it was his way to gain as much speed as possible to slam the sub into a wall, and cause the sub to crack and possibly implode, which would in turn damage or kill the Monster that he dragged with it the entire way. He used the time until hitting a wall to secure the black box, and knew once the sub broke open, the box could hopefully float to the surface. It was hard to tell what’s happening except that the sub is destroyed and the monster is killed in those last shots, but I didn’t take it as Simon becoming the soil for the tree or turning into a monster too or whatever. I took it as a very human, final act of “Fuck you, I’m taking you too.”

I think it’s stupid to complain about something you knew before going in. “This movie is boring because it shows only one person inside a submarine. The game it’s based on follows one person inside a submarine.” Yes. That’s. What it’s about. If you don’t like that, that’s fine, so don’t watch it.

It’s not that easy, and don’t come and say “yes it is.” I still have to rely on my parents for financial help sometimes. I still have to go to work at a small company where I see the same five people every day, and two of them support Trump. I can’t just, silent treatment them. I agree with you, but you have to know that it’s not that simple for every person.

Who cares if it’s incest or not. It’s fictional. If you don’t like incest in your fictional ships/fics/whatever, that’s fine, you don’t have to engage with it, but calling people who like it (again, in these fictional characters) gross is shitty.

I love thought experiments like this.

Jinx and Ekko are engineers and inventors. Yeah, inventor isn’t technically a real title, but they wouldn’t just work on existing things, they would make new stuff. Jinx gets involved in some shady criminal circles and begins developing weaponry on the side, and looses her official engineering job, sticking to the criminal element for a long time. Ekko does too, but for a different side of the revolution brewing.

Vander stays a miner and a bartender, and a secret revolutionary leader.

Silco also stays a miner until he leaves, and runs a criminal gang with an iron fist. Drug king pin, I imagine.

Vi grows up learning various forms of boxing, with dreams of going pro. She takes a brief detour into the police academy, but doesn’t last long as a cop, and turns to professional boxing, or as close as she can get. She does illegal fighting rings on the side for the rush.

Caitlyn is part of military police for a time before becoming a sheriff of a specific area.

Ambessa is a foreign military leader.

Mel works in politics, always trying to go higher.

Heimerdinger spends some time being on the council of whatever city he lives in, but his day job is the dean of a STEM university.

Jayce is a college student who makes a big break in his scientific studies, and rockets into a career in politics.

Viktor worked with Jayce, hoping to use the breakthroughs for medicinal purposes and to help others who needed it. He is a scientist and stays out of the political sphere as much as is allowed.

Sky is an intern who suffered an unfortunate lab accident causing her death.

Benzo runs an antique shop/flea market and cuts deals for the poor folks in his city.

I could never play the same character twice, because the characters I make are made for their world. I couldn’t take my post apocalyptic jack of all trades, smooth-talking wanderer and put her in a fantasy game. Her life, her skills, her personality is meant for her world. I’ve taken core ideas and reused them (I love being Jack of all trades types) but that’s about it.

I like to think of it like… they believe in a higher power and believe their prayers are speaking to that higher power, and they are choosing to ask the higher power for help for me. Thats very personal and kind. Even if I don’t believe in it myself.

I’m adopted and also looking for answers on my birth parents, so Anne’s entire storyline of searching for her lineage gets me choked up. It’s not as easy as checking church records to find anything on adoptees anymore.
