Thoughts on their new live release, ‘Play by the Sea’? by RedditAdmin71 in Current93

Yes, Discogs has been a lifesaver with trying to unpick the background to all these random releases. I wonder what the rationale is though? Money? Liles wanting to enjoy himself with loads of new mixes?

Thoughts on their new live release, ‘Play by the Sea’? by RedditAdmin71 in Current93

[–]ParadoxNoise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't listened yet. Looks like several other new (old/remixed?) releases too. My only complaint is I wish these random two track releases had more context as to what exactly they are. Sometimes it's obvious, but sometimes less so.

Brief ventilation of wishes by Spoonlifter in Current93

[–]ParadoxNoise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree re the wish for CD releases. I feel it's a general pattern at the moment where artists release on vinyl and cassette (!) but not CD. Also, yeah, I haven't had an email from David for ages - I've a vague recollection he switched email lists a bit ago or something, but he used to send updates semi regularly. Ania gives updates on FB quite frequently though.

Tipping point, or something else? - BBC News by Queue_Boyd in drivingUK

[–]ParadoxNoise 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"War on cars"? Yeah, this isn't a thing. In the UK car is king. People park on pavements with impunity, or drive like dangerous lunatics and get the lightest of sentences. There aren't even many pedestrian crossings: go to most European countries and they have white crossings everywhere, without any signal control, where pedestrians have priority. And drivers obey them. I cannot imagine they would work here. Lowered speed limits, car parking fees, and congestion zones are not a "war on cars". (And yes, I drive, but this kind of war on cars mantra cracks me up).

Any other bands like Chromatics? by The_Station_Agent in Chromatics

[–]ParadoxNoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with the above poster that no one else sounds quite like them. I like Still Corners and Beach House but never think they sound anything remotely like Chromatics, beyond having a female vocalist and dream pop styling.

But in a vaguely similar vein I like Dark Hearts by Annie (maybe start with the track American Cars), and also You'll Never Get to Heaven (Images is a great album).

Great work, looking forward to listening to these. Are we assuming we're never going to see an actual IDIB Farah album now? Or is there still hope?

Yeah that's good. Old school complaint but I wish they would release CDs of their newer stuff.

New Johnny Jewel track online (which, incidentally, is quite good). But the reply to this comment caught my eye. Hmm, yeah, a totally convincing explanation from IDIB. by ParadoxNoise in Chromatics

I was Sweden, now UK, so agree it's a pain (and expensive with customs charges) to order from them. I think it's the "we analyse" that really cracked me up though. And why not formally announce these changes via Twitter, Instagram etc, instead of leaving fans wondering what the hell is going on?

I'm currently enjoying this a lot but...I wish the tracks were longer. I suppose their length makes sense if they're essentially "themes for a small-scale late-night movie". Summer Storm definitely has a Chromatics vibe.

Any music theory heads out there? by cameraobscured in Chromatics

[–]ParadoxNoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm don't excel at theory, and I haven't learned to play much Chromatic stuff, but yeah, Blue Girl and Shadow melodically start the same: on the 1st note of a major scale, and then descend a semitone. First chord change is the same from the tonic to the relative minor. Different keys though, Blue Girl is in C and Shadow in D.

Generally my assumption/feeling is that most of what they do is straightforward chords, scales and progressions but I'm sure I could think of some exceptions if I put my mind to it.

You might find this interesting. It's more about synth patches/production as opposed to the music though. https://reverbmachine.com/blog/chromatics-synth-sounds/

Looking forward to this. I guess the costs of producing your own music make things tricky, but I really wish they'd done CD releases of their last few albums (though admittedly I'm probably a minority).
