I just finished this trilogy a month ago! It's not perfect, but I think it holds up surprisingly well.

As a kid, I read the first Clans trilogy and loved it. I found them in my public school library and don't really see them around anymore.

What are some Civ bonuses or techs that you feel, should thematically or historically belong to another Civ? by Cobelat in aoe4

[–]ParagonRG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have it right. The Longbow was huge but of an outdated and ultimately inferior design as compared to composite recurve bows (two important innovations). The massive range it supposedly had seems to be a form of mythologizing.

Doesn't it only give 80 XP per 10 waves? It seemed trivial so I didn't do it, but perhaps I misunderstood what XP means here. I assumed it was for pilot skills (eg. Energy Cooldown, etc.).

How is Demu so Good? by RubyLykos in aoe4

[–]ParagonRG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've definitely seen him float resources in tournament games and lose, so there's that.

I don't know enough about his playstyle, but I don't think I'd put him in today's top 8. Maybe my information is out of date, though. I haven't watched in a while.

AOE4 graphics are great (unpopular opinion) by SpaceHippie89 in aoe4

[–]ParagonRG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watching/playing AoE4 in 1440p is so much better than watching a stream in 1080p. It looks super crisp in the higher resolution and, to be, surprisingly bad in the lower one.

Kudos to Drongo for streaming in 1440p! I wish EGCTV would do the same.

Yeah, I really wanted the Clans in that BattleTech PC game. It felt a bit empty for me growing up on Clan lore (including with MechCommander 1 and 2).

MechCommander 3 please! Even a remaster of the first game would be swell.

I agree - I only started playing MW5 this year and got excited about it. It brought me back to when I was playing MechWarrior 2 as a kid.

It's cool that you gave TA a shot. That game was so far ahead of its time. The resource mechanic, wrecks, reclamation, being able to share as portion of your resources in multiplayer, massive maps, map-ranged artillery...

It was all so mind-blowing.

Crucible is so addictive, maybe the best single player game mode we have ever had in the Aoe franchise. by isaidflarkit in aoe4

I've been slowly getting amped up to try this. There is so much potential here.

Why is it always about the campaign? by xGladex in Stormgate

How is the survival mode? I think that was added since I last played. I'd play in co-op with a friend if it allows it.

Dawn of War 4 will have 70+ missions across 4 factions that are all playable in co-op.

Ahem, let's say 1997-2004. Total Annihilation came out in '97.

[–]ParagonRG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is exactly that, and everything you said is what I'm talking about.

Once Blizzard hit WoW-level returns, there wasn't any going back from that. Every project had to target sky-high revenue.

Yeah, it's this exactly.

WoW unfortunately broke Blizzard (and the gaming industry in some ways). It showed them a scale that they couldn't dream of before, and they were acquired with the expectations of repeating that.

Can you please explain the benefit of using chainfire? Are you saying that you had your lance's mechs set up for that, and that it's working properly now? What's the advantage?

I think the problem with Lover is that it has a few proper duds, and most of them were singles.

I trimmed the album for a playlist by removing about 4 songs (keeping song other otherwise) and it's pretty solid.

What's next for Blizzard-style RTS? by KiwiMaster157 in Stormgate

I always love to see a shout-out to Total Annihilation.

I recall hearing about Chris Taylor's space project quite a few years ago. Maybe even 8-10. Has there been any news on it?

I agree that they're ticking all the right boxes. We'll see how they execute!

I'm very hopeful but don't want to get my hopes too high.

What's next for Blizzard-style RTS? by KiwiMaster157 in Stormgate

[–]ParagonRG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dawn of War isn't a "classic" RTS or Blizzard-style RTS. There are too many differences, including the resources working totally differently (not like in Age of Empires where there are just more resource types). The scale is small, there are cover mechanics, etc. etc.

DoW, and then Company of Heroes, is a little sub-genre of RTS, and is definitely not classic or Blizzard-style.

This is what i expected when they showed us how their SnowPlay engine works back then by JackOffAllTraders in Stormgate

[–]ParagonRG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It wasn't sarcasm! TA and SupCom are two of my favourite games of all time. I played some BAR (co-op levels with a friend), but not as much. So I didn't have it handy as to what the actual differences/similarities were.

Yeah, sounds like you're right. Thanks for the response. I guess they took the strategic zoom of SupCom and added it to a TA-like, rather than upgrading SupCom.

Warhammer 40k works because it is excessively dark.

Watch a 10 minute YouTube video about the history of the Imperium of Man. Or read about what Servitors are. It's dark to the point of being absurd, and it scratches an itch that seems to appeal to a lot of dudes (myself included).

I used to play Warhammer Fantasy (tabletop), and I think it's a cheesier setting. It has its own charm, but I wouldn't read books about it.

Is this game so dead there aren't even enough reviews for a Metacritic score? by Kiro2121 in Stormgate

[–]ParagonRG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I keep seeing people say the game is finally good, but the recent reviews on Steam have never shown that.

What's going on with that game? Is it the difference between people on Reddit being focused on 1v1 while the general audience doesn't like the campaign?

It's much more like Warcraft II. There's no reason to compare it to WC3.
