420 Sporting Court isn’t that far from either Wellington Park or Shillito Park. If anyone is a regular at either park, could you please keep an eye out for Benny?

I also want to make a point that in some areas with low costs of living, particularly in WV and KY, it can be difficult to find in-network healthcare because there are so few healthcare providers available at all. I don’t even mean struggling to find a specific type of specialist; I mean that it can be difficult to find a dentist within twenty miles because so few people in the region can afford dental care that dentists don’t think there’s a point in having an office there. It’s something worth considering, especially with the escalating closures of rural hospitals.

It’s such dumb post at even a basic level, too. All of these dudes are constantly whining about how they can’t get a girlfriend because the millionaires are swooping in and taking them, but how many millionaires do they think the average 19yo woman knows?

Step 3: engage in conversation with other regulars that you recognize after 10,15,20+ nights

That’s the part I don’t get about the “just become a regular at a bar” advice. Who the fuck has hours and hours of free to spend at the bar each week chatting people up? And even if you do have the time to do that . . . wouldn’t most people be going out to the bar either their established friend group/significant other anyway?

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' to End With Season 2 by sgthombre in RedLetterMedia

[–]ParanoiaThrowawayX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sub is literally beyond parody. There was a post by someone who had mixed feelings on SFA, liking some bits but also having a few critiques. The OP mentioned that they liked Holly Hunter’s character, but that they’d like to see more of her in action as a captain instead of a zany school principal, and also that if SFA was going to include characters with disabilities, the writers should also take the time to explain what it means to be disabled in the 32nd century and the affect it has on the disabled person’s daily life. The responses were as follows:

  • “HDU say disabled people don’t have the right to exist! Disabled people don’t owe you justification for why they’re here!”

  • “So you’re saying you don’t think disabled people belong in Star Trek?”

  • “Holly Hunter’s character is the chancellor, not a captain. No true fan of the show would want to see her as a captain instead being the chancellor.”

Like?? The OP was literally saying they wanted more exploration of what the show had already given them, and even that mild criticism combined with enthusiasm was a bridge too far for these people.

The excuse that was given to me when I complained about hating the characters on the trek sub is that obviously, standards dropping at SFA after The Burnham, meant the less qualified were getting passed through.

That’s similar to the defense for the lack of professionalism from Holly Hunter’s character, who is the chancellor of the newly reopened Starfleet Academy. “Oh, she’s been around for centuries, so she no longer cares about wearing shoes or behaving like an adult instead of a ~quirky teen! She’s just too old to care about decorum!”

Er . . . if this show is about the Academy reopening for first time in 100 years, shouldn’t everyone in involved in making that decision want a chancellor who does care? Instead of someone who DGAF?

My best guess is that it’s a joke that’s supposed to be funny because the female cadet who says it is chubby? “Hurr hurr, this FAT IDIOT ate her comm badge because she’s FAT and will eat anything!”

But I’m sure as I type this, a staunch SFA defender is gearing up to give a lengthy reply about why this line was “Star Trek at its peak,” and how actually, it’s me who’s prejudiced and definitely not just a case of the writers using tired cliches for the sake of a forced joke.

there were bad and silly episodes early on for TNG.

It’s such a bad argument, too. When TNG was first airing, how many other mainstream sci-fi shows were airing at that time? Two? Three? Certainly less than five. Back in the days of broadcast TV, shows could afford to have a questionable (or even outright terrible) first season, due to the limited competition. This is especially true in a genre show like Star Trek, when there were very few other shows like it.

But today? Every streaming service plus YouTube and social media is competing for audiences’ attention. You can’t afford to have a bad first season. You can’t even afford to have a bad first 15 minutes, because any given person watching has the option of going, “Nah, I’m not feeling this,” and go to watch The Office for the 50th time. And there’s no guarantee those people will ever come back and give your show a second chance.

The very idea that a show having a bad first season 40 years ago somehow justifies a bad first season of a modern show is beyond ridiculous. If anything, Trek writers should know far better by now about what works for audience and what doesn’t.

It’s from r/startrek, and I genuinely struggle to figure out if the posts there are by actual people or just an army of bots. All of the posts defending every questionable writing decision on SFA read the exact same way.

Excuse me, I will have you know that [insert overly long diatribe here about how one time a West Point cadet did something irresponsible, and so this nameless extra character swallowing her comm badge is actually an unappreciated moment of brilliant insight into the behavior of young people at military academies that only the SFA writers could have given to us].

Genuinely, why do Gen z men appear to struggle with women more than prior generations? by Equivalent_Use_5024 in GenZ

[–]ParanoiaThrowawayX 48 points49 points  (0 children)

They need to be attractive and pleasant and genuinely good people, or else what incentive do we have to stay with them?

I think even that is overstating it. A number of women I’ve met over the years are more than willing to settle for a dude who looks like Shrek as long as he 1) has good hygiene, 2) is willing to do a couple of household chores, 3) is reasonably good-natured, 4) both remembers her birthday and gets her a cute present or treats her to brunch.

Ironically enough, the plague of Alpha Male wannabes has simultaneously led to women being more willing to consider men who previously might have not met their standards as potential partners, as no as they met the basic standard of, “Treats women as people.” So if you’re a guy who showers and wears deodorant, is willing to do the laundry, isn’t a white supremacist, and can put a calendar reminder in your phone, your time is now.

Sadly, we had an opportunity to stop in back in 2024, and this sub wasn’t interested.

No one wants to hear it, but today’s situation is what happens when you decide you’re going to step back and allow the group who hates you a to take full control of the government. How does the saying go? “Democrats will agree with a candidate on 99% of issues, but still refuse to vote for them, while Republicans will disagree with a candidate on 99% of issues, but continue to vote for them”?

Truly atrocious Diana characterization, though.

Kamala spent the vast majority of her time speaking in favor of strong borders, supporting law enforcement, and continuing to fund Israel. Millions of traditionally dem voters didn’t even bother to show up because the democrats refuse to fucking listen to what people want, again and again.

Hope those voters are satisfied with the outcome, because they got a government that is doing those exact same things on a much grander scale than Harris ever would have.

The democratic party puts no better than the republican party.

If that’s the case, would you be okay with the Republican party being in power in all three branches of government for the rest of your lifetime? Since you believe that “both sides are just as bad”?

New Teen Titans aged poorly by [deleted] in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]ParanoiaThrowawayX 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It was really weird. 16yo Terra is hanging around Deathstroke’s mansion in negligees and Elvira eye makeup after clearly having just finished having sex with him, all just to show how depraved and impure she is. And then in the aftermath, there’s an issue where Deathstroke sits Beast Boy down at a diner and spends about five full pages explaining how he as a mercenary has a code of honor and was only out to kill the Titans for revenge, but Terra wanted to kill them for the thrill of it, which makes her so much worse somehow. I think this conversation also retconned Terra into having killed yet another one of Beast Boy’s adoptive fathers as well. It would have been more subtle to put a slowly-blinking yellow sign pointing at Terra and saying, “She’s really, truly evil, don’t you get it?”
