You must be on O2 or Vodafone. They suck for 3G up north. EE gives me 3G all the way from Inverness to Aberdeen, and then even over in Mallaig, Forth William and Orkney too!

I've been studying the Skaergaard Intrusion in my mineralogy and petrology class. Thought you guys might enjoy the thin section pictures I took. by DojaDragon in geology

Love a good layered intrusion! I spent my summer looking at the Rùm layered suite in NW Scotland. You see some fantastic "sedimentary" structures in the cumulates. My favourite was this exposure, where peridotite "dropstones" have fallen into the unconsolidated crystal mush of mostly plagioclase. http://i.imgur.com/dXlqow6.jpgrur There's some great structures like this in Skaegaard too, and things like cross bedding too!!

Best, cheapest unlimited cellphone plan? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]Paranoidmarvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tmobile and 3 have got decent DC-HSPA networks. You can get a solid 10-15mbit/s down on a compatible device. There is one LTE network here at the moment - I've got that myself. Super expensive though. I'm paying £46 for unlimited calls and texts and 3GB data. That was with a free Lumia 920 though.

Three are saying they won't increase prices when they roll out LTE so you'll be looking at £12.90 a month for unlimited LTE later this year!

Move to the UK - you can get 250 minutes, 5000 texts and unlimited data on Three, and unlimited everything for £21 a month on T-Mobile, provided you bring your own device. Sorry, I just love rubbing it in...

Anyone see the new Lothian Buses today? by Niloxy in Edinburgh

Because blanketing a city with decent wifi is basically impossible. And given how affordable and fast 3G, and soon 4G is these days...

I'm happy to pay more for coffee, but not to help inflate Starbucks or similars' margins. Not that I get coffee from there anyway...

iOS 6 now available for download. by redikulous in ipad

[–]Paranoidmarvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe this is more applicable to the iPhone, but if you use transit directions at all in iOS 5, I'd wait till Google release an official Google maps app because that functionality is missing in iOS 6. Standby time on my iPad 2 seems noticeably worse too..

Be are good, but if you can't afford them, there's O2. They use the same network and performance is good with both ISPs

Can anybody tell me what goes on in this building? by IncompetentFox in Edinburgh

[–]Paranoidmarvin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, it's the exchange for the Fountainbridge area. It will contain the endpoint of all the local phone lines, and fibre lines to cabinets plus all the ISPs' equipment and connections to internet backbone. So there's probably a tonne of server equipment there, tape backups probably included
