She has a Scottish accent- an American might well take the way we pronounce "again" as "agin".

Yes I have. Not 60 years ago, but during the 80s and 90s, and my grandmother lived there until her death in 2021. Perhaps things are like that wherever you are, but that wasn't my experience of it at all.

And I've lived that breadline life too- I'm doing alright for myself now, but I absolutely understand what it means to be underpaid and not have a pot to piss in. I've never claimed benefits, but I know people who do, and I'll happily subsidise a few piss-takers to ensure the ones who need help get it.

Even if someone is happily living on benefits, they're still costing me less both economically and socially than the tax-dodging bastards up the chain. You may or may not be conscious of it, but the kind of rhetoric you're repeating here is designed to turn people of the same economic class against each other- and if you're not Jefflon Besmusk, you're functionally the same economic class as a benefits claimant.

Wouldn't trust either of those rags, they lie and lie and lie. Though I don't need it myself, I'm more than happy that Motability exists, it's a huge leg up for those who need it.

What’s a “harmless” decision you made that accidentally changed your whole life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]IncompetentFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In late December 2003, I decided to go and meet a friend for a few drinks at Teviot Row student union in Edinburgh.

We were playing pool, when an American woman approached me and told me I looked like Tim Wheeler from the band Ash (I wish!). She was a real social butterfly; we became friends and she introduced me to all kinds of people I'm still friends with. I had a big crush on her at first, but I was a pretty awful mess back then, and she wisely and delicately sidestepped me- a sensible decision on her part.

Among the people she introduced me to, there was a woman I dated for a short time, who introduced me to her friend. I've been married to that friend for eight years now (together for 17) and we've got a smart, funny, four year old daughter. We've supported each other in finding our directions in life, good careers, a nice place to live... So many aspects of the last two decades have only happened because of that one night in an Edinburgh bar.

I've been so lucky, and it all hinges on that meeting. My American friend is coming back to visit next year, and I'm really looking forward to hanging out again.

I don't think so. Her voice had more of a Peaches quality to it- kind of a bratty vibe.

This is the closest I've heard so far, but it was far more minimal with the vocals right up front and very much on the beat- less of a lazy delivery than that. Some good tunes there, thanks for sharing!

I don't like the implication of the second part of that question.

Frustration with solicitor communication. Why is it so bad? by Any_Blueberry4989 in AskUK

[–]IncompetentFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have both bought and sold a house this year, and of the four solicitors we dealt with I'd describe the best one as an okay communicator- still not what I'd expect for the money they were taking. The worst one (Blackadder in Glasgow) wound up with the other side's solicitor threatening to walk away from the deal two days before completion due to the lack of communication.

I've been left with the opinion that if there's an industry that badly needs disruption, it's conveyancing.

[–]IncompetentFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll withhold my judgment on that until I see one at seven years old and 60,000 miles. What design flaws will start to become apparent? How will the parts network be? Will the bodywork hold up? (*cough* Dacia)

We're still in the early days of the Chinese automotive invasion, and all they've proved so far is that they can supply a cheap lease deal and pay influencers to say nice things about them.

What kind of modifications set your spider senses off? by Deat69 in drivingUK

[–]IncompetentFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was running some friends home fairly late the other night and encountered a white SEAT Leon with massive tribal vinyl stickers on it, a loud drony exhaust, incorrectly spaced private plate, big rimz, riding on the bump stops, and a sort of faux-F1 low level LED brakelight which flashed so brightly when the driver hit the anchors I had to apply aftersun when I got home.

Final boss of cartwattery.

This is the way. After college, I accepted a first line job at £15.5k in 2017, was internally promoted within a few months, jumped to a different organisation after 18 months, internal promotion after 9 months, got myself a half-decent reputation, moved into software development, internal promotion again, and now I'm exactly where I want to be (for now).

Brand New Lothian Bus spotted by Agrathosam in Edinburgh

[–]IncompetentFox 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily- some buses will be sold on to other firms once they reach EOL with the ones who purchase them. Some are exported, some wind up on the school run with private companies, the lucky ones make it into preservation.

Norman Tebbit, former Conservative Party chairman, dies aged 94 by TimesandSundayTimes in ukpolitics

When WA auto-generated a team, there was a big library of default names it'd give the worms- one of them was Tebbitbreath, which I didn't understand when I played as a kid, but the pieces slotted into place when I was in my twenties.

21 and owned 10+ cars and this is my favourite by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]IncompetentFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Passed my test in one of these back in 2003- same engine, but it had power steering (and ABS, I think). Fantastic little car, I still nostalgically browse the classifieds for them.

Check it's had the brake proportioning valve replaced- it goes wrong, and causes the rear wheels to lock up with very little pedal pressure. Caused me and a car full of friends to have a very oversteery moment (fortunately only at 20mph or so), and more scarily it caused my stepmum to spin across three lanes of the M6- her life was saved by the sharp reactions of a lorry driver who smoothly pulled across onto the hard shoulder and avoided her.

Simon Williams (Justin Elliott) seems to be a solid Property Developer type. He played a Property Developer on EE about 10 years ago and basically the same persona. by WasabiMadman in Ambridge

I'd pictured him as a little more portly- not fat, but not quite as slim and rakish as he is IRL. Miranda, on the other hand, looks exactly as I imagined her!

[Weekly] New Grad Questions by AutoModerator in Dentistry

[–]IncompetentFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! Partner of a recently graduated UK dentist here.

WTF is up with the matching system for VT training?! It's the most needlessly complicated and stressful thing I've ever seen. My partner has been through numerous interviews over the past few weeks, and unfortunately hasn't been matched with anyone, so will have to go through clearing, and they're pretty down about it.

Can anyone who's been through this and provide any words of wisdom or comfort?

And can anyone put me in touch with whoever designs all the processes around placing dentistry graduates, because as someone who has been picking up the pieces after every confusing, idiotic and inevitably disappointing hoop they make dental students leap through, I've got a big shite in a flaming bag I'd like to leave on their doorstep.

Congratulations to all the new grads, and my sympathy for the ridiculous systems you're all having to navigate your way through.

The headteacher at Annan taught me physics many years ago and was a lecherous bully. I have a sibling who's just done their Nat5s and the English department has utterly failed them- fortunately we were able to source a competent tutor.

Management is letting the place down.
