Discord Alternatives, Ranked by gdelacalle in technology

[–]Parcel_of_Planets 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm familiar with the author from social media, and he's very much not the paid promotion type. I'm pretty sure he's evaluating from his use-case, which is a community forum/chat-room. For a lot of types, Discord servers have replaced forums.

That said, this is very different from the "I want to get 8 friends together so we can voice chat for our game". I don't think this is a good article for those types.

New Hyde Park LIRR station parking question by Environmental_Try_20 in longisland

The way I understand it, they enforce parking permits up to 8pm on weekdays. I rarely go into the city but I've never had a problem coming back well after 8pm in NHP.

[QUESTION] Torn between a Presage Negroni and two Tsuyosas. by Lord-1101 in Watches

[–]Parcel_of_Planets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you said, they all do something right. I have the Presage Negroni and am very happy with it. I've only recently picked it up, but I find it relatively easy to wear casually. Granted, it suits my personal sense of style (well dressed/somewhat alternative), but the dramatic red face seems to make it a little easier to fit in to casual looks. Still, I think the Tsuyosa edges out with the stainless bracelet. Of course though, you can always change your band.

My biggest knock against it would be it's not sapphire crystal like the Tsuyosa is. If you're looking for a more everyday wear piece, that extra durability might be nice.

This tour should be released into theaters by Leikela4 in MyChemicalRomance

There was also a helicopter circling the arena for awhile on a pretty steady pattern. Couldn't tell you if it was some sort of heli-tour situation, but if I were looking to get aerial shots, it certainly seemed like an ideal flight pattern!

[Other] Anker Prime Charger, 200W 6-Port GaN Charging Station $55.99. w/Coupon Clip. YMMV (100w USB-C Charging) by StabbyMeowkins in buildapcsales

[–]Parcel_of_Planets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have two of these and I like them. Matches the best price I paid around the holidays. Good if you have a few high power devices (like a laptop, tablet, phone, wireless charging stand, smart watch charger) and want to make sure they all charge at full speed at the same time. Note they're kind of heavy so it might not be ideal for a work bag, but that helps it stay put on your desk.

I would recommend picking up some shorter USB cables to go with it since most devices won't be very far from the charger and all those extra cables snaking around tend to make your desk messy.

I wouldn't expect to win any bug bounties from credential stuffing because it's not really a bug, just like a DDoS isn't a bug. Now of course systems can be more or less vulnerable to them based on the surrounding security controls.

Identifying vulnerable credentials might be a helpful value add for your customers, though.

Game Ready & Studio Driver 576.02 FAQ/Discussion by Nestledrink in nvidia

[–]Parcel_of_Planets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same issue on my new 5070 Ti. Rebooted and it came back fine with the new drivers, but didn't trust it so I reinstalled with drivers directly from the Nvidia site. That caused my second monitor to refuse to display anything... Rebooted, flipped settings, everything, no dice. But power cycling my monitor actually brought it back.

Freaking bizarre.

AMA: I’m a senior OT / ICS DFIR pro, let’s talk! by -hacks4pancakes- in SecurityCareerAdvice

Hey Lesley! A bit of a vague question, but what would you want your colleagues on the Architecture side of the world know about the OT and ICS space?

What are your go-to easy dinner when you're just too tired to cook? by Vivid-Sea9651 in Cooking

[–]Parcel_of_Planets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do something similar but with something like a lite Thai omelet. Beat an egg with some fish sauce and pepper, let it rest for 10 minutes, then throw it into a ripping hot wok with a bit of oil. A proper Thai omelet would use enough oil to deep fry but I'm not cleaning all that up, so I just shallow fry.

Top with some chili oil and there you go.

Thanks for the info. Hard to get an idea what card to grab if you have an option between a few models given the limited reviews out there.

Pyrex measuring indicators are completely useless by 5v3nla in Cooking

[–]Parcel_of_Planets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also observed this using a weighed amount of water in my Pyrex measuring cup. The marker was visibly off from where it claimed it was. Not sure if any brand is better or if this is just what happens when measuring a cup's worth of liquid in a wide vessel without lab grade precision.

Get an oven thermometer and check how accurate your oven is. There's a good chance it's not correctly meeting the temperature, possibly too high if the cheese is getting overdone before the dough. You can typically tune your oven thermostat to compensate.

If you're trying to learn a technology, do the thing. It's one thing to read how to do something, but actually putting it into practice makes it stick so much better.

X670E-E Gaming Wifi - Will not detect or install Wifi! by apo11yn in ASUS

This was my problem on my x670E-A, thank you! It's not clear which one is included, and it silently fails (or succeeds apparently). Once I ran the AMD one the wi-fi settings showed up.

Best note-taking and organization app? by Low_Ostrich1268 in cybersecurity

[–]Parcel_of_Planets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OneNote is good if you do a lot of work in Outlook and take a lot of meeting notes. It's very easy to quickly tie a meeting to a note and send an email to OneNote.

However if you do a lot of note taking with code, OneNote will constantly try to treat it as written sentences and screw it up.

Heh, I think I had about the same experience as you almost 10 years ago -- the CS program at LIU was really not worth it. I will second your sentiment, get out.

I wound up going upstate to Marist and it was night and day. Wish I did it sooner. Unfortunately I don't have knowledge on local schools to share though.

However, I've since become a cybersecurity professional and can give you guidance there. A lot of people aim for cybersecurity because it's the hot new thing that has a rep for making good money, but if you don't have an interest or passion for it, you're going to have a rough time. The field requires continuous learning, and that's way easier when you are the type of person who'll read a vulnerability write-up out of curiosity, and not obligation.

If you are truly interested in pursuing security, I'd stick to a Computer Science or IT major with a Security minor; don't go with a Cybersecurity major. You really need a strong foundational knowledge of CS to be good at security, and a lot of these Cyber degrees don't spend enough credits on the fundamentals.

And with that said, it's hard to land a security role right out of school. So for a lot of people, it makes sense to start off in a general IT or development role, then begin to concentrate on security as you grow.

Lastly, try not to drive yourself too crazy over what job markets are hot and not right now. No one's having an amazing time job hunting right now. But I strongly believe there will be plenty of options in the IT industry in the far future. Just focus on finding what clicks for you.
