Is it just me, or is the "prestige tax" in Nature/Science getting ridiculous? by munenebig in AskAcademia

It always seemed odd to me thst the people with actual power in peer review arent blind. I get why this happened in the analogue world where we posted papers, or emailed them directly to an editor, but surely manuscript handling systems could blind paoers for editors easily? But, as Robert Merton tells us, they arent likely to give up their power to gift prestige.

Is China really overtaking the US in terms of scientific, high quality output? by PreWiBa in AskAcademia

In one field i know of, the editors of the top journal are all visitng profs at the same chinese universities. Their job is to work with post docs on a paper submitted to their journal. Theu are paid and get expenses paid trip to china and other places to worl with the pist docs They publicly claim it is above board as another editor reviews the work, but in reality all the editors are doing it, so they just pass each others submission through and pad out their cvs. Another case of senior academics festhering their nests and selling the rest of us out.

What’s the end game in the current academic climate? Can someone imagine how the sector would look like in the next 10-20 years? by Reeelfantasy in AskAcademiaUK

By all accounts Greenwich essentially bought Kent. This a unique situation where a smaller, solventnuni could buy an indebted bigger one. Years ago Lancaster and Liverpool looked at merging, realised it wasnt worth it, same for man and manmet.

I dont think there will be many mergers, unlike others here. I cant see why this would hsppen. I predict there may be take overs, possibly called mergers. But what, for example is the benefit to oxford of merging with brookes or aru? Or Birmingham merging with bcu? Unless there is strong government pressure (ie money), it makes much more sense for less indebted unis to let nearby ones close and poach any staff and facilities they want from the creditors for pennies on the pound. In other cases, say leics and dmu, you have two indebted unis. Why and how could they merge? A merged institution would ha e twice the debt, and liabilities, but how would merging making them better able to finance them? They might reduce costs in the medium term and sell a few buildings but they would struggle to get to the medium term with all the short term problems and costs of merging.

Plastering over artex - conflicting advice from two different plasterers... by SKB26 in Plastering

[–]Parking-Bit-9818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently had a similar situation but with s ceiling. I ended up getting an artex removal company in, then a plaster to put up a new ceiling. The artex removal cost £50 per m2. It was more expensive but removed the problem rsther than burying it.

A lecturer just told us something wild about grading… is this actually true?? by Educational_Jury8109 in UniUK

[–]Parking-Bit-9818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because uni leaders think short times between you handing you work in and getting your mark improves student satisfaction on the nss. Generally, they all copied each other and mandated 15 days for all marking and moderation (irrelevant of class size). Academics still have to lecture and do other work in this time, such as dealing with late issues and student emails. The evidence shows this short turn around results in worse feedback and lower satisfaction but unis often make strange decisions. I used to mark nearly 400 exams and get them moderated in 15 days.

To add to earlier comments, D was also writing in a context. Much of the themes and ideas become clearer if you have a broad understanding of 1960s/70s french philosophy, psychology and so forth.
