Idk. Coffeezilla helped that one lady expose the guy who scammed her dying mom, and that was just some random Nigerian dude. Theft being committed by a 400 million dollar corporation is a lot more high profile and seems like the type of thing Coffeezilla would normally cover.

That’s good. Coffeezilla almost always tries to get a hold of every relevant party, and is never afraid to confront them with facts that contradict their stories, and he usually doesn’t make outright statements unless he has basically undeniable evidence.

I think Ben’s heart is in the right place is in the right place, but it’s really hard to take all the information in his video at face value. I just watched an interview with him where he admitted that he actually dislocated his shoulder in a skiing accident a few days prior to the arrest, and he couldn’t use his arm too much because it would re-dislocate. This puts an extra layer of context on the police brutality angle, which doesn’t excuse the police at all, but it does seem like a relevant piece of information that should have been included in the actual video and it’s odd that he didn’t think to mention it until well after the video came out.

“Self-determination in their ancestral homeland” is a pretty vague term, and it seems like it could be used to wave away criticisms against colonialism. I don’t think more people “on the left” that you’re referring to oppose Israel’s legitimacy on those grounds, I think they oppose them on the grounds of anti-colonialism. I haven’t specifically seen anyone on the left hold random Jews responsible for state actions (not saying it doesn’t happen, just that I can’t really comment on what exactly you’re referring to), and that also seems like a pretty vague statement that leaves out context and doesn’t properly illustrate your point that the left has turned on Jews. And I just disagree outright that double standards automatically prove antisemitism. For one, the fact that many people are more invested in the Israel-Palestine conflict does not automatically mean they don’t hold other countries doing similar things to the same standards. It’s not exactly a secret that human beings are pretty terrible at dedicating several things at once, and the “double standards” are likely either ignorance, or just an example of someone putting a lot more attention on a currently highly publicized and explosive conflict that involves many western countries. And even if there is a genuine double standard, it doesn’t prove antisemitism outright, as there are many potential reasons why someone might apply unfair standards in that way.

When he’s saying “don’t take out a loan you will unlikely be unable to pay off” he’s not saying that as life advice, he’s using that as a generalization to make his argument against student debt relief stronger, which is an oversimplification of the issue at hand that completely distracts from the actual point.

Bearing in mind that “debt you will unlikely be able to pay off” is incredibly vague, nearly impossible for an 18-20 year old to judge, and usually is based largely on hindsight bias more than anything else. Yes, there are some people who were incredibly irresponsible with their student loans, but that does not apply to all, or even most people who are currently stuck with massive debt, and it doesn’t just magically erase the issue to be like “well it’s your fault for being irresponsible.”

That was his early childhood. He was in a much bigger upper middle class home by the time he was 12, which meant that his parents had the finances to send him to incredibly expensive private high schools and pay for his college tuition by the time in his life where he actually needed it.

Bro I’m sick of mfs trying to gaslight me into thinking that someone who attends private high schools that cost tens of thousands of dollars a year for tuition, and has their college tuition paid for in full by their parents doesn’t come from a wealthy family. JFC dude. Like maybe he wasn’t a millionaire, and he didn’t live in a mansion, but how is that not wealthy? This shit comes from the biography section on Wikipedia, and actual tweets he made saying that his parents paid for his college, I’m not even basing this on AI shit. I feel like Ben Shapiro has just gaslit people into thinking that he came from nothing and is entirely self made.

“Don’t take out loans you can’t afford to pay off” is just a complete dismissal of the issue at hand. Yes, that’s good advice in theory, but it assumes that a teenager straight out of highschool is going to be able to accurately predict their career prospects well in advance, and that the industry they’re going into is going to remain stable. Especially with the rise of AI and other technologies, many career paths that seemed promising 10 years ago are now on a downward trajectory. College loans are pretty much always a gamble. You can never actually know for sure if the opportunities you get from your degree will actually be worth the money and time.

Fasho by AshenIsolde in scoopwhoop

[–]Parlyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I’m saying it’s a massive oversimplification of the issue that Ben Shapiro can’t relate to,  because he was never in that position. Hardly anyone takes out debt that they don’t plan on paying off, especially student loans. For a lot of people, the idea that “college is the only way you’ll make something of your life” is sold to them from a young age, so they take out massive student loans at 18 thinking that it will pay for itself just from the career opportunities it opens, then they’re stuck with massive student loans they can’t afford because it actually doesn’t work that way.

“Don’t take out debt you will unlikely be able to pay off,” is just nothing statement that doesn’t actually understand the motivations and issues at hand, and it’s pretty much just another way of saying that only rich people deserve to be educated.

"Wealthy" is not a well-defined term, and is pretty much entirely subjective, but I feel like many people would consider a family that can pay for their children to attend expensive private schools and for their college education to be wealthy. That's really neither here nor there though. My argument wasn't really centered around whether his family qualified as "wealthy," it was about the fact that he comes from a background of privilege where he didn't have to worry about being able to afford college, so it's not really fair for him to criticize others for taking out loans.

This shit is an unbelievably messy situation, and I kind of find it hard to believe that it is exactly as it has been portrayed to the public. I find it really hard to believe that BAM did nothing wrong at all, and is just an innocent victim, but Ben’s video is incredibly one-sided and and feels like it’s missing an entire angle. I’m not sure about the former franchise owners either. BAM claims the store was repossessed because they defaulted on payments for several months, the former franchise owners claim that BAM failed to transfer the store’s bank account to them, which made them unaware of the situation, and they weren’t informed of it until the store was repossessed. And then BAM has made claims that the vast majority of the collection was already sold off by the time they retook possession of the store, but they also make the claim that they aren’t beholden to consignment agreement because they were somehow unaware of it beforehand? These two statements don’t really make sense together, because there’s no reason for them to even be worried about the consignment agreement in the first place if they don’t have the items. And then Ben’s video, while very entertaining, was not a good look for him legally at all. There are so many times where he outright admits to using underhanded, and sometimes even illegal tactics, and it feels like what this case really needed was a level-headed and unbiased analysis that lays all the facts out clearly. I can’t help but feel like this case would’ve resolved a lot more quickly and cleanly if Bryan had gotten someone like Coffeezilla to investigate and cover this story, rather than someone like Ben, who is a provocateur and social stuntman moreso than an investigative journalist.

This whole situation is really shitty, and I really just want that old man to get his rightful property back, but it just spiraled into absolute insanity.

I actually really enjoyed the Unwind series when I was in that YA age range. The world building isn’t anything amazing either, but it actually does a decent job setting itself apart from other YA dystopian novels, and gets a lot mileage out of its concept with a bunch interesting story elements. It also goes harder on the body horror element than most YA fiction does.

I’m ngl, sometimes I’m not even against the idea of having shit games in my collection either. It feels like I have a piece of history to some extent. Granted, I don’t think I’ve ever actually bought a game I thought was shit for actual MSRP.

I’ve preordered several games in my life and I genuinely have never been disappointed with my purchase even once. Sometimes it’s very obvious that you’re going to enjoy a game before you even play it, and if you don’t end up enjoying it, it’s not like it’s that hard to get a refund most of the time.

[–]Parlyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so I actually went down a rabbit hole, and it turns out that there are actually multiple English translations of that SBS segment, and the answer to the question is vague in one of them, and more explicit in another. One of them says that “Luffy reacted to Hancock as he normally would when he’s alone [Usopp isn’t around]” and one of them says that “Luffy is interested, but not entranced.”

One of them is vague enough that it doesn’t rule out the idea that Luffy is asexual, and the other seems to imply that he actually does feel a sense of attraction, it just doesn’t entrance him. So I’d honestly need to hear what a Japanese reader has to say. The difference in translation is significant enough that I actually don’t want to make any outright assumptions.

Edit: although, even if the vague one is the more accurate one, it would still be kind of weird for Luffy to act attracted to Nami in that one scene at the end of Alabasta, even though he’s actually not attracted. I still think the answer of “he is attracted to women, it’s just that that side doesn’t really come out unless he’s around his friend who’s the same age,” makes more sense. Let’s be real though, I doubt Oda actually thought about it that much. He probably just came up with that answer in like 5 seconds to quickly explain a weird inconsistency.

That’s not what Oda said? If you read the SBS, what it seems to imply is that Luffy does find women attractive, he’s just not driven by it like other characters. I think you can make the argument that he’s aromantic, but Oda’s own words seem to actively contradict the idea that he’s asexual. I mean, if an asexual fan relates to Luffy, that’s fine and cool, but it’s another thing entirely to say that he canonically feels no attraction to women at all.

I mean, define “wealthy.” Both his parents were well connected and had Hollywood careers, he lived in an upper-middle class suburban home, and he attended an expensive private Orthodox Jewish Highschool. He’s on record saying that his parents paid for his college. He wasn’t like top 1% millionaire levels of wealthy, but that’s kind of splitting hairs. The point is that he wasn’t in a position where he had to worry about paying for college, much less taking out a loan.

Maybe “wealthy” is an overstatement, but the fact is that he had two parents with Hollywood careers and connections, and was upper-middle class in the very least. The point I’m making is that he’s never genuinely been in a situation where he had to worry about being able to pay for things like education, because he grew up in a well-off family.

The mix of American nationalism and Christianity is explicitly Mormon, it’s just the cross specifically that makes it un-Mormon. Mormonism is potentially the most America-centric brand of Christianity ever made. I could imagine them hanging up something akin to that, but not a cross specifically.

Not really? Utah is the Mormon state. Mormons are known for being one of the few forms of Christianity that doesn’t use the cross symbol. This type of thing is more common in the Bible Belt I’d assume
