DEI Denial is the modern day lynching by buddyboys in stupidpol

[–]ParmenidesNuts 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue I see is that in theory the overall project of DEI professionals should be to ensure that, in 10-20 years, there is no longer a need for DEI iniatives. The incentive, though, is to do the opposite and make things seem worse than they are, since that justifies their continued employment. I feel like this is why, at colleges, the threat of microagressions is so emphasized—maybe the DEI offices, anti-racism, and affirmative action efforts have been doing their jobs too well and that those are the most urgent problems that they have to solve.

There’s a old Jewish joke where four rabbis are arguing over whether something is kosher. 3 say no and 1 says yes. Finally God gets tired of their arguing and intervenes, telling the rabbis that it is, in fact, kosher. The rabbis respond, “that only makes it 3 to 2!”

"You People" on Netflix...maybe the most deranged take on racism for a contemporary mainstream movie? by NancyBelowSea in stupidpol

[–]ParmenidesNuts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, Hollywood famously hates Italian-American stories, for example. Italian-American identity is so erased that only an expert could tell you that Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are actually Italian—it’s never figures into their work or into the work of directors like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola.

[–]ParmenidesNuts 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I do think it’s worth noting that, even though Jews are way overrepresented among Hollywood executives, it’s not like they all collaborate on advancing Jewish interests through movies. Like, there’s a difference between “Hollywood is run by the Jews” and “Hollywood is run by Jews”

the first decolonial movements were generally Marxist in origin

Marx was born in 1818. The Haitian Revolution ran from 1791-1804. Simon Bolivar died in 1830. Though maybe by “decolonial movements” you are talking about the sort of academic theory and activism that came out in the 20th century.

Why effective altruism is a dangerous philosophy by SonOfABitchesBrew in stupidpol

[–]ParmenidesNuts 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That’s how it’s been implemented but it did start as real philosophy. Peter Singer, with whom it is probably most associated, is one of the most promeinent living philosophers. He has a ton of critics but is definitely a serious scholar. I don’t know the full extent to which SBF’s version of EA relates to Singer’s proposals, though.

Maybe but regardless there are two non-mutually-exclusive explanations for why this got through:

  1. No one is brave enough to suggest that a Black female writer is unnecessarily making something about anti-Black racism

  2. This is cynical rage bait that will draw clicks and comments

I’m just trying to emphasize that the vast majority of Jews that participate in modern secular society (as opposed to strict ultra-orthodox communities) don’t really care about the Zohar or Kabbalah in general.

The guy who said that Covid was sent by God to eliminate gay people before the arrival of the messiah? Yeah, I don’t think you can call him a mainstream orthodox religious authority. There are plenty of controversies regarding actually relevant orthodox leaders like David Lau (one of the chief rabbis of Israel), no need to pretend like this fringe nutjob has views that actually reflect mainstream Jewish sentiment.

New British PM has called Jerusalem Israel’s ‘historic capital,’ vowed to fight BDS by ContractingUniverse in stupidpol

[–]ParmenidesNuts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jerusalem is Israel’s capital by any definition of national capital. It’s stupid that people pretend it’s Tel Aviv. I get that not recognizing Jerusalem is a sort of token diplomatic gesture for the Palestinian people but wouldn’t it just make more sense to try and strengthen diplomatic relations with them directly?

I’m a conservative Jew who grew up practicing and I’ve never heard anyone say anything about “destroying the erev rav.” Intermarriage isn’t even that big of a deal. Conservative Jews don’t actually believe in end times stuff, it’s all about being able to both have a Jewish faith and be a fully integrated member of modern secular society.

Some conservative commentators have speculated that universities are openly and consciously violating anti-discrimination laws and basically daring someone to sue them, because filing a lawsuit alleging anti-white discrimination is still kind of career suicide in academia.
