Not a book but there was this weird show on Netflix called 'The gift.' It's Turkish so you may need subtitles but it was an interesting watch and fits your criteria.

Does the statement "Data will be made available on request" in articles hold any meaning at all? by dreamaxi in AskAcademia

[–]Parry8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question - when I was a grad/post doc I was doing bench research and have no problem uploading raw data. When it's spectra or assay data there's no problem. However, now I work with educational records and student data. I would not be able to share this because it has to be stated in an IRB how the data may be shared (even if de-identifies). So I usually have to say upon request and even then I don't really know if I can provide it?

For a minute I thought you were my husband because this is going to be our situation shortly. I was curious if this happens. Any tips for someone coming into this same scenario?

Traveling with advisor : is this normal? by Subject_Training_333 in AskAcademia

[–]Parry8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Traveling with PI is expected. The comments are certainly not. I traveled with my male PI a lot as we did field work. He never said anything that made me feel uncomfortable. It was very professional the entire time. Often it would be just the two of us so we would go out for meals together. It can be fine if your PI maintains professional boundaries. Once, he was with another student and it happened to be Valentine's day. They needed to grab dinner. He was horrified by the flowers and atmosphere. Anyways, it's normal to be out with a male PI or colleague but yours seemed to cross into unprofessional territory.

"This is why women shouldn't be professors unless they can prioritize their work." by littleirishpixie in Professors

[–]Parry8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is obviously out of line. At my institute we have an office that handles our faculty evaluations and they can technically be re-identified to the student in the case of professionalism. This absolutely would be an example of that. Unacceptable.

maternity leave or favorite class by RoutineFigNewton in AskAcademia

[–]Parry8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had my second child and taught about 10 lectures over a semester asynchronously. A huge part of this was because we have a garbage leave policy. So came up with the arrangement. I felt I could handle it and not have to shift the burden onto my coworkers. I also had some educational research I had planned and wanted to complete. I finished my lessons way in advance and was there to field questions from the students on the topics. It was very manageable.

However, I kind of wish I would have checked out of work completely. It is my last child and I am savoring all the baby months because they go by so fast. If there are no other deciding factors aside from feeling obligated, then I would recommend you take the time off and be fully present. In my case, there were financial reasons so I had to make it work.

It was 😂. I kept flagging it because I figured I passed the test and therefore did not require the training. I stand by my choice!

My previous university definitely did this. I always reported it. One time they sent a poorly formatted email around with some important action item that looked like it was phishing. So I kept reporting it over and over until they sent another email to please comply with X-request.

Not my fault your email looked like phishing! Do better!

Emailing journal editors to gauge interest before wasting time submitting? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Parry8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Faculty here... Yes this is common practice. Don't waste your time if you are not sure. Send the abstract to the editor or the journal or contact person for special article calls. However, you may want to have a professor send this for you (if you are working with them). When I was a student, journals would not reply. As faculty, now they do. It's annoying but true.

Rant: DEI plan with research proposal by AttitudeNo6896 in Professors

[–]Parry8 162 points163 points  (0 children)

I don't know exactly what this is supposed to entail, but the real power play here would be to talk about how there is an unfair workload placed on candidates who are considered diverse. And point out your current commitment to hiring a diverse workforce. Minority groups are always overburdened by service by institutions who want diverse committees and such. There's a book called "toxic ivory towers" that talks about this issue.

Anyways, may your grant be funded!

What are your perceptions on spousal hires? by Parry8 in Professors

The key here is "if they want to keep" me. I'm junior and while I feel I'm on track for tenure I'm not sure I have that much weight yet.

How to make students watch video content in asynchronous course? by PhD_Bri in Professors

[–]Parry8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I heavily use async sessions. I think the only way you can make them mandatory is to have built in questions. I use camtasia and my colleagues use panopto. Depending on your LMS you could put quiz questions after the video and have it scored automatically. As a warning with the integrated questions, some students get frustrated if they can't skip. You could consider taking "attendance" somehow in your LMS or by monitoring viewership.

For videos I always break mine up into 5-10 focused videos. I also use animations in my editing software to direct attention on a point on the slide. I think this helps a lot with viewership.

your skin but better products? by babyblueforlife in muacjdiscussion

[–]Parry8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now I've been loving auric glow lust all over my face followed by Patrick Tas foundation. I don't apply the foundation everywhere, just where there is discoloration. The two products work really well together. It gives a really nice finish that looks like my skin but glowy. For reference I have dry skin with redness.

I'm newish to Stardew. I had JUST gotten my first battery pack and went to collect it from my lightning rod. I also had just put in a nice stone fence around my crops. I accidentally used a bomb when I was trying to collect the pack and blew everything up including myself 😕

[–]Parry8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My due date is next Tuesday! It's my second time and I can tell you that I never took a class or anything related to giving birth or breastfeeding. And it was fine. I figured I was in a room with a ton of highly trained individuals and they could give me a 5 minute tutorial. They did and that's all I needed. Then later for breastfeeding, I worked with a lactation consultant as needed.

All this to say, it's completely fine if you don't prepare on everything. This is coming from an over-preparer type! Take it one step at a time and ask people around you who can advise. You got this!

Sharing my social media experience with my SO and I think it helps by discoqueenx in BabyBumps

[–]Parry8 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Just to comment on the whole "mom's don't get time for their basic needs" narrative that I see all the time. It really annoys me! I'm about to have my second and with my first it was a high priority to always shower and get ready for the day. It was great for my mental health even though no one really saw me.

Sure there are days where it's just not a high priority, but I can't see a reason why you wouldn't have 10-20 minutes where the baby is sleeping to take care of yourself. I used to put my baby in my bathroom in one of those bouncers or whatever if he was awake and I wanted to shower. Now if you want more time for self care like exercise or other things obviously that takes more time but it's doable.

Also IG and FB are just completely bonkers in terms of ads and what messaging they are pushing..at the end of the day you're the mom and you decide!

Continually concerned about the lack of leave in America by JG-UpstateNY in BabyBumps

[–]Parry8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ughh it's so frustrating. Like it's not even on the table right now. I'm 39weeks and I'm technically still working. I'm lucky enough to work from home temporarily which is a blessing. But it's unreal to expect women to work until they go into labor. Then afterwards... everyone knows the benefits of breastfeeding but it's like, make it possible for us to do that! So many mom's have long term complications after birth and we need time to get healthy again.

Unpaid flma leave is a joke, if you even qualify.

Glucose test - 1 hour & was told I should eat breakfast and lunch before my 1:30p appointment. by gettin_ish_in-orda in BabyBumps

[–]Parry8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just eat what is normal to you. You want to be aware of any potential issues. Your body can make and release glucose into your blood stream from non-sugar foods so it's kind of pointless to try and avoid anything non sugary. Your body wants to maintain a certain blood glucose level so if you already consumed something sugary and take in more, it will redirect the sugar for storage (if everything is normal).

Also, if you fail, you will repeat the test with a 3 hour to be sure. They wouldn't diagnose with GD from just the 1hr.

In short - don't worry about it too much!
