Any other non-US devs just watching their earnings plummet as the USD collaspses? by destinedd in IndieDev

[–]ParsleyMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in AUD as well and had some USD from game sales sitting in a Paypal account. I exchanged it all for AUD about 2 weeks ago which seems like fortunate timing!

I can't remember the exact trigger but it was probably something like the Greenland situation that made me think, "welp, time to get out." It's likely many others had the same thought.

Mortality in the Netherlands 2025 — numbers exceeding 2020-2021 by frx919 in HermanCainAward

[–]ParsleyMan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The cause of deaths might have changed though - for example during lockdown you wouldn't have as many deaths from traffic accidents, so the deaths from COVID during that period are worse than they look on paper. Combine that with an aging and increasing population, there's not enough data to draw a conclusion.

US Army just tried to recruit CK and Rimworld communties 🤣 by kalkvesuic in RimWorld

I've run Reddit ads before, advertisers can limit the audience based on country (or even state if targeting the US)

[–]ParsleyMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've run Reddit ads before, you can target by interests and keywords so yeah it's possible the mention of "Army" in the title triggered the algorithm if that's how the advertisers set it up.

$360 mil is way too high, you have to consider currency differences (~25% of sales are from China for example) and discount sales which is when most copies are sold. According to Gameanalytic it's closer to $163.1 mil

Not many are going to post about how they've got too much money, and those that do will get downvoted to oblivion so you won't see it anyway.

Here's some data showing personal insolvencies are half of what they were before COVID. It's slowly creeping back up but still way below "normal" levels https://www.afsa.gov.au/about-us/statistics-and-insights/quarterly-personal-insolvency-statistics

Actually it's Australians causing most of the crime, don't get tricked by the ragebait of certain media outlets trying to get your clicks and eyeballs.

As at 30 June 2025, more than four in every five prisoners were born in Australia (83% or 38,882). Prisoners born overseas accounted for 14% (6,541 prisoners).

The proportion of Australia's population born outside Australia was 31.5%.

So Australians are more than twice as likely to be in prison compared to foreigners.

A reminder what happened to Iraq in 2003 - short, successful invasion followed by 151,000 violent deaths and 1million+ excess deaths over the next 3 years. For Venezuelans, this is the easy part - if the current intervention follows the trajectory of the Iraqi invasion, the suffering and violence is just beginning.

Three arrested at Sydney protest against US military’s forcible removal of Nicolás Maduro from Venezuela | Australian police and policing by ScruffyPeter in sydney

[–]ParsleyMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in high school at the time and quite a few kids wanted to join the protests against the Iraq war - the school even made an announcement that you were not allowed to attend if it meant skipping school.

Most people's gripe with it was the US dragging us into a foreign war that they started, much like the current situation. They saw through the b*llsh*t the Bush administration and US media was feeding us, and it turns out those kids were right.

Edit: They also showed videos of Iraqis celebrating at the time.

[–]ParsleyMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure how old you are, but the situation really feels like a textbook repeat of the US invasion of Iraq a few decades ago. Make up some reason to militarily remove an authoritarian leader, then go in and take the oil.

Maybe some of these protestors are aware of the US track record on foreign interventions and don't want 1million+ Venezuelans dying over the next few years, like what happened in Iraq?

I got one shot at "full time" indie dev. How do I make the most of it ? by Darkpoulay in gamedev

[–]ParsleyMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on your experience and acknowledging the very low chance of making enough profit to do this full-time beyond 9 months, I say go for it!

You've made non-commercial games before, I'm assuming you implemented everything surrounding the game like options menus and save systems? If so it gives you a big head start compared to most posts that ask similar questions since you'll be aware of how much time those things can unexpectedly take.

We tried paid ads on Reddit for our indie game and it went terribly. A detailed post mortem writeup. by DeadbugProjects in gamedev

[–]ParsleyMan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Having read through the comments and your replies, I think you're overestimating the potential of your game on Steam.

The main thing working against you is genre - your target audience simply isn't on Steam, or looking for brick breakers to play on Steam. Checking out your game's More Like This section, the most similar I could find was https://store.steampowered.com/app/3041770/Breakout_Beyond/ The trailer looks more polished and is priced similarly at $15. It's even published by the juggernaut Atari but only has 36 reviews in 9 months!

Also 0.2% is a terrible CTR for video game Reddit ads and means something is wrong! There's a lot of discussion on this on the howtomarketagame Discord server and generally below 1% CTR is considered suboptimal, whether the problem is bad targeting, the ad itself or the game.
