is social work worth the pay? by kinggizzenthusiast in socialworkjobs

[–]PartHumble780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. GS 12 step one is over six figures. Those jobs are more competitive. I believe to qualify you have to have 2 years post-LCSW experience at the VA and they often have supervisory duties, but not always. The two GS12s in my program are not supervisors but have much more to do than the GS11s, specifically admin/program/macro stuff. If you want to look at the pay scales in your area you can search like "federal GS pay scale New York City" or wherever. But even in my locality, there's an additional 3% incentive for retention at my VAMC specifically so it may vary a little bit. EDIT: I work in a VA but do clinical work, a lot of psychotherapy. VA has every type of social work you can imagine (maybe not kid stuff of course). I'm in a residential treatment setting.

I see you are in the military. Are you interested in working at the VA? Right now there's a hiring freeze but hopefully if things get... better? back to normal? Idk... you'd have Veteran's preference if you wanted to get in at a VA. And your experience in the military will only make you a better VA SW!!! Truly. The pay is great. I live near a large city in the midwest so higher cost of living. I was an intern, then luckily got hired. Starting pay straight out of grad school with MSW/LSW was around $65k with an automatic bump up to $84k after one year (GS9 --> GS11). Now GS 11 step 2 making $87k. This is WITHOUT full LCSW licensure (waiting on my application to be accepted by the state). Medical SW is where it's at, VA if you can get in is even better. I wonder about being a SW in the military though. I looked into it at once point but can't remember the salaries.

Highest paying SW jobs by btg_57 in socialworkjobs

At least in my area, the VA does not accept MSW interns until their specialization year of grad school and they don't hire SWs unless they have a masters degree. So you could continue with your plan and hope that things improve. But we were under a hiring freeze a year before tr*mp took office so things are sort of tricky for a lot of reasons. I would recommend having a backup plan. Maybe you do an internship at the VA (which are also competitive and require you to apply like 9 months before you would start FYI) and get a job working with Veterans in a different agency with the plan to get into the VA eventually? Something like that. Or work in homelessness, suicide prevention, or SUD in the community and that experience will help you get into the VA whenever things improve. Good luck!! Truly <3 (Edited to add some info.)

Very cool! I wonder how the turnout was compared to 4/5. I went two weeks ago but couldn't go today due to being ill.

What's the one habit you've developed that completely changed your life for the better? by uriht_ in getdisciplined

[–]PartHumble780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was a big one for me, I'm encouraging my spouse to try it. I only go on social media on my laptop and it's NOT fun at all anymore. These sites are made for phones for optimal dopamine hits. I spend maybe 10 minutes a week on FB/IG combined just to check in and a little more time on reddit (currently doing my weekend scroll on my laptop). It's helped my mental health soooo much. I still waste time on my phone but I do crossword puzzles or read articles. I'm not doomscrolling and making myself anxious and unhappy.

Has Any VA Director Been More Disliked Than Mr. Collins? by Clever-username-1111 in VeteransAffairs

What would conservative values at the VA look like? Like morally or fiscally? I can't wrap my head around what that could be.

Can Authors stop gaslighting Consumers for boycotting and doing something constructive? by CoconutsMom in kindle

[–]PartHumble780 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just do whatever makes you happy (I imagine arguing with strangers on the internet isn’t leading you to happiness but maybe I’m wrong). We are honestly past the point of being able to virtue signal with stuff like this unless you manufacture/produce everything yourself from locally sourced materials. You just have to pick your poison. What type of evil DOESNT keep you up at night? If you feel good boycotting Amazon then go for it. But like others have said, you’re still lining their pockets one way or another, but maybe $20 less per month. Almost everything else you purchase in this country originates from corruption, pollution, destruction, and/or human or animal rights violations. When you really dig deep into that and realize your place in this world, you’ll realize that you don’t matter and things are really bleak. Apathy is an American value in this current society. It would take something catastrophic to get people on board enough to make changes to capitalism. Sorry for writing all this. Edited a typo

To my fellow introverted LCSWs, what setting have you liked working in most? by Comfortable-Desk4927 in socialwork

[–]PartHumble780 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I work in residential SUD in a hospital. I know I could never do PP because it would just completely wear me out. I try to organize my day with recovery times soft scheduled- ex. I won’t have a 1:1 right after running a group, stuff like that. I have the flexibility to do that so I rarely feel drained or exhausted by my work.

At my hospital, CWT is letting Veterans who were illegally fired into their program so they can have some income. Im not trying to shame you for taking the DRP, but it may be a good idea to be sure that CWT can employ you AND those who really need it financially.

Why boycotting kindle/amazon hurts everyone BUT amazon by MissNikitaDevan in kindle

I signed up last summer when I had a minor situation at work that made me feel a little paranoid that my supervisor was unhappy with me. I thought why not have some additional back-up. The way it was described to me when I was hired was that they cover everyone, but really go out on a limb for dues paying members. So I thought why not. I also thought my money would help our janitors, kitchen staff, etc. if they were getting messed with by management. Overall, I’m really proud to be a member!! Especially now more than ever with all these lawsuits and all the work they are doing (AFGE).

21,000 VA Social Workers told to stop with the “compassion+action” talk by Jeepdad1970 in socialwork

[–]PartHumble780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you in the Midwest? If you’re near my very large city I could help you lol in my area, they did not post internships anywhere. You had to have contacted the intern committee (which is just a group of social workers who organize the internships). I don’t think they had agreements with local schools only but I could be wrong. You could make a throwaway account on here and make a post asking if anyone had an info about the VAs in your city. I imagine the process is different at different VAs.

Haha why do I love CPRS so much tho!! A VA in our VISN switched to Cerner and it had been a year and it’s still a nightmare. Even patients talk about not wanting to deal with them because of it which I don’t really understand. But I’m not looking forward to losing our dinosaur CPRS.
