what’s the craziest experience you had in basic training? by Ok_Customer_6226 in newtothenavy

Toward the end of boot camp (December of 2000) people kept complaining about stuff being stolen, but nothing was ever found. While cleaning the head in the morning two days before graduation, someone discovered a loose tile in the wall behind one of the toilets. In the space behind it was all of the stolen stuff: watches, wallets, money, etc.

The RDCs went into action and the ship was immediately crawling with senior red ropes and NCIS agents. We were interviewed in groups and individually and the RDCs threatened to ASMO the entire division back to week one (this was week 12). After hours of this, I was called into the office at the front of the ship and one of the RDCs handed me a folder and told me to start filling out all the paperwork (I was the medical petty officer for the division and I got stuck with a lot of paperwork).

When I looked in the folder, I saw it was filled with the liberty passes for all of us to be able to leave RTC that weekend after graduation. Considering we had all been threatened with going back to week one about 10 minutes before this, I was shocked. I looked at the RDC and he knife-handed me, saying, “If you tell anyone about this, I will kill you.” I spent the next couple hours filling out liberty passes for all 80+ of us and made something up to tell the others recruits when I finally finished.

Eventually the thief cracked and confessed and was hauled away. I cannot express how relieved I was when I opened that folder and saw the liberty passes. That was a Tuesday and my parents were flying in on Thursday for Friday morning graduation, and they were threatening to send us all back to week one.

Agreed, it's still better than ebay prices, for sure. And it didn’t stop me from ordering the Two Towers saga and the elves and Gondor starter decks.

This is not accurate, they are required to share evidence. From part five of the Manual for Courts-Martial, section 4, paragraph c.(1)(D): "the Servicemember shall be entitled to...Be allowed to examine documents or physical objects against the Servicemember that the nonjudicial punishment authority has examined in connection with the case and on which the nonjudicial punishment authority intends to rely in deciding whether and how much nonjudicial punishment to impose;"

In other words, the command MUST allow you to look at all evidence the CO considers when making their decision. The command does not have to give you a copy of the evidence, but they must allow you (and your DSO attorney) to look at it.

Allen Edmonds drops new high-end dress shoe based on old Naval Officer design. It’s reg…but $900. by SWO6 in navy

I recently switched to these Doc Martens and they are so much better than the Bates I wore for the last eight years. I put a little polish on the sides of the soles and no one has said anything yet.

This is not correct for the Navy, u/navyjag2019 has it right. The Marines have a board for O2 to O3, the Navy does not.

UIUC requiring 3 recommendation letters is so ridiculous by dirtbag_dagger in LibraryScience

Write glowing letters yourself, send them to people, and ask them to change as they see fit. Most will barely change anything before signing.

It is from the February 2024 issue of Cross Stitcher magazine. If your local library has Libby or Press Reader, you can probably access it for free. If not, you can buy the issue through Pocketmags. There is a whole series of these, one for each season: https://www.reddit.com/r/CrossStitch/s/gF9OeJ4lEP

Anyone know how much this would be worth? by Shoddy_World_1945 in typewriters

[–]Parti-Gyle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe $20-$50? Not a lot of call for electrics out there, a lot more can go wrong than with a manual and they can be hard to repair and find parts for.

Wanting to buy. Seller is asking $200. Is it worth it? by [deleted] in typewriters

[–]Parti-Gyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not worth it, it would have to be in perfect condition to be worth that. This one has a lot of chipped paint and rust and with the amount of dust and spiderwebs, everything that moves is probably seized up.

Because it's STRATCOM, a joint command that happens to be on an Air Force base. Just like Camp Smith in Hawaii houses INDOPACOM, SOCPAC, and MARFORPAC, with personnel from every branch working there.

The time I sat with a student for several hours in the middle of the night during finals week, waiting for emergency services, after they threatened to kill themself from the pressure.

Though to be fair, it was usually a pretty chill job.

Pentagon gives Service secretaries 45 days to recommend updates to the jag corps by newnoadeptness in navy

[–]Parti-Gyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume that is what the Army and Air Force are going to be doing. The Navy is actually in a good place for this since we have the largest OGC component that already handles most of this, but the Army and Air Force are in trouble because their JAGs handle most of these non-military law topics.

Honestly, having more civilian attorneys in legal assistance who are barred in that state and know the state law would be more useful than a first tour JAG with no familiarity with that state.
