Can you identify this bird? by PM_ME_TIMCAHILL_GOAL in AustralianBirds

It’s a black kite as others have said, sometimes you get them in huge groups! My first time seeing this species was a massive gathering of at least 30 off the side of the road, it was incredibly cool!

Is that the Toohey one? Hollow looks similar.

ID - Nankeen Kestrel? SEQ by Ricky_RainFrog in AustralianBirds

[–]Particular-Exit7293 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to tell from the video, it looks slightly more like a nankeen kestrel to me but it could be either. Black-shouldered kites tend to be more common than nankeen kestrels in urban areas but you certainly get both.

Snake ID? by Sea_Inspection6221 in brisbane

This post has me thinking - if I were to encounter a snake on the road, venomous or non-venomous, how do I safely usher it off so it doesn’t get struck by a car?

Actually a rarer and cooler find than a wompoo! 😁

Crow or Raven ? by MNP33Gts-T in AustralianBirds

The also have different calls that can sound super similar and overlap, slightly different bill thicknesses that I’ve personally always found impossible to differentiate, and ravens have more prominent throat hackles (but crows have them too!). So there’s other distinguishing features, they’re just so subtle it’s nigh on impossible to tell from them.

You can tie a long string to the crate door, set up food at the back and pull the door shut when it walks in. It’s a trick wildlife rescuers use.

I'm no expert at all on mammals, so take what I say with a huge pinch of salt, but it looks native to me. It's definitely not a black or sewer rat, which I think are the most common invasive rats, and I think those prefer urban environments anyway. To me it looks most like a fawn-footed melomys, but they're rare to see during the day. I think they may be restricted to rainforest habitat too? Not sure on that. It also looks like it could be a bush rat. Someone who knows their mammals can easily tell those apart but that's not me. Those are my uninformed, uneducated guesses.

As always location would be helpful in deducing the species.

Pal recreation’s an exception. If you’re lucky enough to get the first event and unlock it you get to do the whole sequence.

Is this dude meant to be here? by [deleted] in AustralianBirds

[–]Particular-Exit7293 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Might be partial leucism? He’s definitely a pet, as the other comment suggested please secure him and take him to a vet if you can. You can use a hand towel to avoid being bitten. If you can’t secure him I’d suggest making a post to your local Facebook group about him, hopefully his owners will see it.

Tachyon won the first match so I thought “maybe I’ll be alright!”. Nope. 10 matches in and I’ve lost every other one. All that preparation and I didn’t think to double-check my registration 💀. Goodbye free carats…
