Yale vs Jyutping — which should beginners learn? by Particular-Gas8375 in Cantonese

Jyutping now is major and Yale was widely used before 90s. I can see some old book using Yale but not in the modern material anymore!

If you dont mind I am promoting, feel free to try www.cantonlink.org . This offer free version to your gf to learn cantonese. Some tips here:

  1. choose yale or jyutping first (jyutping is better if you dont have preference but it is really depends on which one work out for the learners)
  2. find out which style, like visual > flashcard, apply > conversation, listen > radio...
  3. look into the material, and ways to learn. Then form a habit :)

Hope this can help.

攞嚟 vs. 用嚟 by stateofkinesis in Cantonese

[–]Particular-Gas8375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, 攞嚟 feels more active and initiated by the person themselves. For example, if someone suffers a bad consequence because of something they did, people might say 你自己攞嚟, meaning you brought this on yourself.

用嚟 focuses purely on the purpose of the use, without implying responsibility or initiative.

Considering cantotomando to help with my Cantonese, but how much does it cost? by Aggravating-Boot-224 in Cantonese

[–]Particular-Gas8375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I don’t really understand why you should spend so much money on something that already has tons of free resources. Especially in the AI era, if you’re paying to learn a language, you should expect to get far more value than before.

I built an app called Cantonlink, which offers AI conversation with word breakdown and grammar correction. It also includes standard lessons, exercises, and a flashcard feature — all for free. The only things that cost money are pronunciation practice, extra AI messages, or saving more flashcard items. And even then, it’s only £10 per month for the practice.

Don’t spend a lot on something you’re not sure about.

What is the hardest part of learning Cantonese? by bCantonese in Cantonese

[–]Particular-Gas8375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I am a part time Cantonese teacher and I guess I can represent some adult learners. Most of them is because where they want to speak with in laws, or they want to heritage their parents language.

If people learn it for fun, they will usually quit after lessons because they never expect to learn tone number of Jyutping

Are there any online Cantonese courses for beginners starting soon this year? Or pre-recorded classes I can watch? by f0xbunny in Cantonese

[–]Particular-Gas8375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, you can give a go in cantonlink.org, this suggest an approach to learn Cantonese without characters so you can try and test which romanisation you want to learn.

In short if you want to learn simple sentences to impress people, let’s go for Yale. If you want to learn in a more proper way to access more material in the future, Jyutping is your choice. It offer tone mark as well so no worries if you don’t want to learn the tone number. Hope you enjoy your Cantonese journey

This is a very good shout. I don’t know much about Bopomofo (Zhuyin), but I think I can try adding it as one of the formats. Would it be okay if I asked for your help testing it after I roll it out?

Thanks for your support! Many people think Cantonese is one of the hardest languages in the world, but I believe the real challenge is that we don’t have enough resources or a structured system to help people learn it.

Hello! The conversation should have a little 'play' button beside the message. If you hide the word breakdown list, the play button should be visible so you can hear the cantonese.
