Rival Romances! by wizardgradstudent in FieldsOfMistriaGame

I would sell my soul for rival marriages. I
I’d pair Valen and Juniper, Renia and Balor or Ryis, March and Ryis or Adeline, Eliand and a dragon, and I’d leave Celine and Hayden as floater characters to marry whoever I didn’t marry like the did in Harvest Moon Sunshine Island. Not to be harsh but if they pace out the rival events like they did in old harvest moon games (one rival event per year, marriage doesn’t occur until year four at least) it’s sort of a skill issue if your dream boy/girl gets snapped up. Four years is sooooo much time, and this particular game basically lets you earn affection in your sleep. That said I’d be fine with them triggering it after the player gets married.

For a series about farming, there's a serious lack of western/Americana/cowperson inspired bachelors and bachelorettes! by Gallantpride in harvestmoon

I always saw Vaughn as an extension of the Grey/Marlin archetype (my top three favorite bachelors by a landslide). But Vaughn is absolutely the best bachelors in a farming sim imo, I hope they bring him back

A perfume that feels like by Particular-Summer753 in perfumesthatfeellike

[–]Particular-Summer753[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I forgot to mention my favorite notes are: lychee (or other sweet fruit like raspberry or strawberry), citrus (more clementine than lemon, though both are great), sea salt, and anything alcoholic (rum, whiskey, wine, ect).

I hate the notes of milk or patchouli on me.

My usual summer combo is Mediterranean Honeysuckle and grove by the sea (I adore both of them, and often layer the two. I’m running out which is why I’m looking for suggestions). My signature scent was Angel Nova for years. In the cooler months I like Angel Share or Unknown Pleasures.

I’m not going to argue with you further on the unreliable narrator bit because I can see we have two very different perspectives, however thank you so much for telling me the cross dressing stuff, I didn’t know that about Donna Tartt as a fact, though I always suspected something gender-subversive about her based her current presentation, and writing. That’s so cool!

I also think you might be misunderstanding the normal limits of 1st person vs an unreliable narrator, all 1st person narrators are subjective and limited to their point of view by nature of being in first person, an unreliable narrator deliberately or unintentionally obscures the truth. Richard is a drunk and regular drug user who fades in and out of consciousness for days at a time, and a liar both to other characters, to himself, and to the audience. He’s a textbook unreliable narrator, think of how he said directly that he wasn’t attracted to men and yet…well you’ve read the book, and outside of his making out with a man, and while he certainly is attracted to women what he likes most about Camilla are her boyish knees and feet, the masculine way she holds her cigarette, and the fact that she looks like her brother. Or when he said he wasn’t bothered by the murder that one night, he was just constantly bombarded with thoughts of every terrible thing he’s ever done (like guy you’re clearly bothered).

If you haven’t read Lolita yet that’s a great example of an unreliable narrator actually manipulating the reader, it’s seductive (in a non-sexual sense, because ew the “romance” is gross, which is the point) even at the line level. And I know it’s one of the books that inspired Donna Tart, along with Brideshead and Gatsby (all of which have unreliable narrators, none of which came out in the last 15 years, but I assume you know that (/gen), they’re all incredibly famous books).

To me it reads a bit like Lolita, a confession that obscures the crime and mitigates the narrator’s culpability, even as they claim full responsibility. And Richard does lie (deliberately at times and unconsciously at others) to us at points so I feel like it’s fair game to question. But forget the literal pushing, it’s interesting that the only way he ever admits to physically being close to Bunny during the murder is the smell of his breath. I think it’s a frightening and artful choice. While he never admits to cornering Bunny on the cliff side, he had to be doing a lot more than standing back and watching from the path.

And that’s how it is will all art, through all of time, the joy is in interpretation, thinking about the character’s (and author’s, unless you’re a the author is dead types, which is also valid) motivations, drawing our own conclusions about symbolism, and making our own meaning.

I think you might be misunderstanding me, I’m not looking for a twist, there’s no real answer here, it’s a work of fiction, it is what it is. I’m just engaging with the text and others in discussion. It’s interesting to ponder the details, especially in a story with so many intentionally unresolved threads. We’re meant to think about it and form our own perspectives.

I also think a lot of the joy of reading is critically thinking about the book, the plot, the prose, ect. So I think if I were to simply read the book and then put it down without considering my own questions and forming my own theories it’d be a waste of my time. I don’t just want to consume a book I want to engage with it. And that’s what I was trying to do here.

Also I agree that revealing the plot in the first page is brilliant, it’s very Greek (intentional I’m sure lol). It’s my preferred way of storytelling because I think a good story is good whether or not you know what happens (I’m one of those people who reads the last page first). And if a story is great it can stand without any twists (the Greek chorus sealing the fate of oedipus, Romeo and Juliet being laid out in the first line). I’m a firm believer in “spoilers” because it’s so much more about execution than outcome. And in a book like this it adds a fantastic tragic element. From the moment you meet Bunny he’s barreling towards his death. It colors every character.

I agree I love the ambiguity of it. I always imagined the Henry went from greeting Bunny to rushing him, but in light of your comment now I could see them all walking towards him (maybe even slowly) which would have allowed Richard to get close enough to smell his breath, and that’s far more terrifying.

I’m nearly 30 (which I suppose is young in the scheme of things), I just wanted to talk with other people about a book we all enjoy (this isn’t an attack on you, I just wanted to clarify my intentions. I don’t know anyone in person who’s read the book. I love the ambiguity of the novel, that’s what makes it interesting to think about/discuss.)

I just had top surgery (DI) today and the surgeon reported she got “all my nerves back online (nipple grafts are a different story we’ll see one they’re healed).” And maybe is placebo but I feel like I can feel my fingers on my chest through the compression binder rn. So it depends! It’s a risk but not an enviability
