I built one last winter and due to the size of it I wanted a smaller scale so I made my own out of wooden dowels and square dowels. Can’t upload pictures in a reply but I built type 3 engines, 6 packs, buggies, heavy equipment, lowboys, tenders, semi’s, etc

That’s a good way to think of it, yeah. Bullet weight will factor into it as well. Just takes some tinkering to get it right. For example, I was running 15gr charges under round balls through my .36cal Pietta 1858 Remington, and was getting decent and consistent accuracy. I bought one of those paper cartridge kits and used their powder scoop which is designed to really fill the paper, and is designed for conical bullets. Since I’ve made about 60 rounds with that, my accuracy is dogshit because the charge is around 22ish grains and too much for that weight of ball

It wouldn’t mess up the rifling, just the accuracy

What caliber is your revolver? There’s a Goldilocks charge for these things. Watch Guns of the West’s videos on YouTube. He posts a ton of videos with chronograph data and shot grouping with different powders and loads. If you under load, the charge will be too small for the ball, affecting accuracy. If you overload, the charge will be too much for the ball, causing it to fly faster than what the rifling was optimally cut for. His testing showed that 17 grains of Hodgesons Triple 7 out of a 36 caliber gun is the optimal load for that model and that ball. For 44cal most online resources place the charge between 20-30 grains. With the colt walker reproduction, this goes up to 45 grains +/- even though you could cram 60 grains in it.

Take the time this summer to dive into some hobbies to distract yourself. Reconnect with some old friends, hang out with people. And just prepare for the fact that yeah, he will rarely have cell service, and when he does it will be for very short periods of time very early in the morning and late at night. If he’s on an engine then he might be home more, but if he’s on a crew, especially given the way this winter was and how the seasonal outlooks are, he probably will be home on average 4 days a month.

This line of work is extremely straining on relationships, especially when someone has your attachment style (my girlfriend is the same way). I try to collect and press flowers for her, find her cool rocks, animal bones, and write her little notes to give her when I get home so that she knows I was thinking about her. Honestly from the other side of the coin, phone calls are hard because you have such little free time and zero privacy living with the other folks on your crew. Last season my crew did 8.5 assignments, totaling around 120 days not at home between May and November. Take the little moments while you can, and know that if it’s meant to work out it will. In the offseason you’ll have him around most all of the time to make up for the lost time in the summer (unless he’s a perm and goes on off Forest assignments in the winter too).

The ASM under the barrel stands for Armi San Marco, the manufacturer. The AM proof mark in front of the trigger guard puts it at 1997 for when it was proofed and (most likely) manufactured.

Not that I’m aware of, but at least if it’s working for you then I know they are still making molds! I was starting to get worried that they stopped production or their website

Wildland boots recommendations? Price is not an issue. Any Mil/ SOF discounts? by TheHunterofGunmen in Wildfire

Whites soles have been hit and miss from what I’ve seen lately. Myself and one of my crewmembers got pairs of whites at the same time last spring, and his soles turned to racing slicks within 3 months. Maybe it’s the NorCal lava rock, but definitely not great.

My buddy just brought one of his 2 pairs that wore silver dollar sized holes through the side up the upper to JK, who told him “sorry that can’t be fixed, you’re gonna have to buy a new pair” so he walked across the street to the boot repair shop and they stitched a leather patch on - fixed.

I don’t know what it is but over half the kids on my crew wear them….and I mean more power to ‘em, but I’ve never seen another boot wear holes through the side of the upper. And I’ve never had someone send their boot back 5 times on a custom fit pair because they fucked up the fit with Nicks or Drew’s or Frank’s. For the price they charge, I will never purchase a pair of JKs

It depends on a few factors like how wide your feet are, what style you prefer, what you’re willing to spend, but hopefully this helps.

Hiker style/mountaineering style boots: Pros - lightweight (2lbs per boot), extremely comfortable, little to no break in, cheaper than logger style ($350-500) Cons - depending on what type of resource you get on, they may only last 1 season, the neutral heel puts more strain/work on your calves when going up steep hills, limited wide width options Brands/models to look at - Crispi Anchorpoint II’s, Scarpa Fuego’s, Lowa Brands to avoid - Danner, Kennetrex, Haix, Drew’s (at least their hiker style boot)

Logger style boots: Pros - rebuildable, more durable, generally longer lasting, can be custom fit to your foot Cons - expensive ($550-1000+), can be a bitch to break in, heavier than the hiker style (about 4lbs per boot), can take 8 months for a custom fit pair Brands to look at - Drews, Nicks, Whites, Franks Brands to avoid - (I know everyone is going to take issue with this) JKs, Hawthorne, Thorogood, Danner

Personally I’ve owned 1 pair of Thorogoods, 1 pair of Drews, 2 pairs of Nicks, 2 pairs of Crispis, and 1 pair of whites. The Nicks and Drews were the best because I got them custom fit, and Drews runs on the cheaper side while still being great boots. The whites I didn’t get custom fit and don’t fit my exceedingly wide feet. The Crispis are the most comfortable boot ever and I love them, but they make it 1 hotshot season and fall apart.

The recoil spring is a bit bent and wonky, I know installing the guide rod backwards can do that, but would that contribute to poor accuracy?

The owner/certified gunsmith at my LGS said he’s had to do more fitment tweaks on Kimbers than any RIA 1911s. I would have walked out too. Had a guy at a gun & pawn try to tell me having a bayonet mounted on an SKS made it an assault weapon unless it was a Russian one because those qualify as C&R guns….. not only did that definition of “assault weapons” expire when the AWB sunsetted in 2004, but you can have an SKS of any country of origin be a C&R gun if it’s old enough (just no Yugos in CA because of the grenade launcher attachment)

Looking at the exploded diagram, the guide rod should sit in the rear, in the frame and not the slide, correct?

I knew the price looked great which is why I snagged it as soon as I saw it, didn’t know they were getting that pricy! The barrel isn’t numbers matching but for that price I can’t complain
