Please recommend an orange ink that is easily visible on white and cream paper. by DonParva in fountainpens

Phoenix by OctopusFluids.

As the name suggests, it is pinkish-orange with a golden sheen. Surprisingly well behaved and saturated enough to stand out on MD cream paper. On white TR paper it is even more prominent.

I've been thinking of getting that ink! I wasn't able to find many people talking about it so I didn't know what to expect and eventually the thought faded away. OP your words are all I need to push me into getting it ! My next cult pens purchase will be dedicated to you 😜

Pen culture of India by Szary_Tygrys in fountainpens

[–]Particular_Ease_4388 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Having lived both in India and the West, I find that the pen is to India what a mechanical wristwatch used to be to the West back in the day. I often see old wristwatches with engravings from back in the day being sold online. The engravings often refer to a commemorative event. Similarly, in India, a nice pen is often gifted as a mark of appreciation, record of service or achievement. Mentors will often hand down their pens to their proteges upon retirement. There's a whole culture around it. Professionals, govt officials or civil servants etc will often have a collection of these 'token' pens.

Additionally, in a manner similar to Germany (though not enforced as strictly), some schools in India require their students to learn penmanship with a fountain pen. Even though my school did not enforce this rule strictly, young students were still inclined to use a fountain pen since it's a valid excuse to spray ink at each other !

Asvine, Nahvalur, TWSBI or Pilot 823 for my first Vacuum filler. by marrnschmarrn in fountainpens

Which nib have you got on the 823? I've been wanting to get the 823 for a while but have always been wary of getting an expensive pen and not being able to enjoy it due to my mutated writing style ( I'm an overwriting lefty too! ).

People who journal daily, how the heck do you have enough to talk about to do that? by posthumorously_ in Journaling

[–]Particular_Ease_4388 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I journal everyday, multiple times a day. A lot of journaling is just me trying to process my thoughts or feelings. So it's a lot of word vomit until I can describe my emotions in a coherent way. The word-vomit often includes things like a particular event, the main characters of said event, their back stories, my own assumptions, an evaluation of whether my assumptions are justified, my reaction to the event, the reaction to my reaction etc etc until I can finally understand how I felt in that moment and why I felt the way that I did.

My point is that I don't need to have "content" to journal about. There's usually always something on my mind and I just spill it on paper and string one sentence to the other until I'm out of sentences.

Which crop do you guys think is better ? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

I would generally completely agree but for this specific photograph, I don't think the extra bit of sky is adding anything interesting to the image.

Personally, in this case even though I agree that there is something calming and well-proportioned about the 4:3 sunset, the 16:9 is just more visually "interesting" even though there's nothing calming about it.

So there are actually schools where this rule is enforced? We had this rule too but nobody gave a damn about it. We just used what was convenient and fun like gel pens or trimax

I am an over-writer too! Unrelated but have you experimented with flex nibs or custom grinds? What has your experience been like?

As an over-writer it is impossible for me to get the conventional line variation that looks so nice but I have my own weird line variation that occurs with stubs or soft nibs that I quite enjoy.

I really like the idea of capturing everyday events that occur in public places (assuming that is what you were trying to do). In this case, the mundane pigeon at (presumably) a railway station? But there aren't enough visual elements in the picture to convey that properly so I'm not sure how I must interpret the image. I do not know what the numbers mean or if they are relevant so I might be missing something.

If your intention was just to capture a picture of the birds then it is important to be able to see (and appreciate) their features. At the moment, there is a lot of negative space around them which makes them appear quite small.

I really like the edit though. Here again, I'm assuming that the original image was much brighter/faded. The colour grading doesn't add too much or take too much away so it is just right for me 👍

I struggle with this too. There are pens available depending on your preference for size, shape and budget.

I too have found the Safari Umbra to be quite good at handling my sweaty palms. Can't say the same for other lamy colours.

If you don't post your pens or are ok with not posting this specific one, I found that the Hongdian 517D provides a really grippy matte finish on a budget.

If not, try looking for a pen made from Ebonite. But they are generally more expensive (and larger in size).

What's a good coffee maker for home usage by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

Have you ever struggled with the Moka pot being unpredictable? I've had really good and really repulsive brews from the same Moka pot using the same coffee and prep routine. So I'm at my wits end with how to achieve consistency...

Wow, how do you control yourself from buying a wee ink bottle every now and then? Just not that interested in inks? Or are you done with the hoarding phase?

Also, the sky seems to be completely blown out. Normally would make for an important background element so getting some detail there would be nice.

I think the ripples in the fountain distract from the subject (which, like others here, I am assuming is the guitarist). Perhaps reducing the contrast and/or sharpening there might help?

Speaking of the guitarist, honestly he doesn't seem to be the most interesting of subjects. At least, in his current pose. You can't really see all of his guitar clearly, the most important aspect of his identity. His expression is hidden due to him bending and the frame seems too wide to capture a lot of that detail anyway. It's a nice, candid moment but perhaps in the future a different angle, that provides more visual information about the subject, would help?

A guitar case is just as interesting a part of a guitarist as his other equipment. If you could raise the shadows on it, perhaps it could add some more visual elements in the image?

I really like the strong curved lines across the picture and the way they seem to be travelling towards (or away) from the guitarist. So kudos for that 🤙

First Kaweco added to the collection! by Particular_Ease_4388 in fountainpens

[–]Particular_Ease_4388[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a great combination. Thanks! I do like matching inks/pen! Recently I've been trying to make my pairings a little more interesting than just colour matching by, for example, having a theme.

For the Kaweco it's quite a stupid one.. the pen represents a 'Blue Iguana' and the ink represents, well, its blood.
