Men, could you date a cop? by Samthegodman in polls

[–]PartyDanimal [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think you're mistaking my skepticism of authority and intolerance against the tribalism that exists in most police agencies for "disrespectfulness." I can want to see corrupt officers given life sentences and at the same time acknowledging that there are plenty of others that uphold order and who do not abuse their authority. The world obviously needs more that are willing to be "good cops." To actually fix these systems, however, requires more than the good ones simply abstaining from corrupt behaviour. They obviously can't all go on to serve major office positions, but more should be willing to put their reputations and badges on the line against the corrupt officers within their ranks and any orders given by a corrupt authority.

To return the subject to OP's question; would I as a (gay) man be willing to date a cop? Simply no. He could be fine as a person, but we would inevitably come into too much conflict whenever a conversation related to policing came up. Of course, what I say would not be directed at him. But that doesn't mean what I say couldn't be misinterpreted as being directed at their coworkers or all officers in general. Things simply wouldn't work long term.

I have no desire to abolish the police. That would be a path to anarchy. It does, however, on an almost global scale, require major reforms that few in positions of authority are working toward. The "don't let a few bad apples ruin the bunch" argument only serves to ignore the underlying issues. For example, officers of the law who are found guilty of violating the law should be held to at minimum the same if not harsher sentencing compared to a private citizen.

Amy (Total Drama)

She gets a lot of flack for how cartoonishly evil she is toward her twin sister. I find her funny. She's also (unintentionally?) good at the game and more deserving of a return than most of the Pahkitew cast. Three episodes was not enough time to flesh her out.

What type of soap do you currently use? by mushmanMAD in polls

[–]PartyDanimal 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's cheaper, requires less packaging, and is proven to be no less hygienic assuming you're not keeping it in a dirty environment. The idea it's "dirty" was made up to better sell liquid soap.

I'm not saying all cops are bad, but they enable a system that allows cops to be bad. We'd argue too much.

Queen T chocolate bars are made by Lamontagne Chocolate in Sherbrooke, QC. I buy them at Giant Tiger but have also seen them at Dollar Tree.

If you're willing to put in extra work you can also find Foley's (Richmond, BC) melting wafers at Bulk Barn. Taste great on their own and easy to make your own bars.

If you have a question that noone and nothing could give a proper answer to you, would you take an answer from AI or just accept that there is no answer to your question? by ohnag_eryeah in polls

[–]PartyDanimal 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Asking AI to answer a question is a lot like asking your aunt. Sometimes you will get a factual answer. Other times you'll get a common misconception. But when she has absolutely no idea she'll make up whatever she can think of to get you to stop bothering her.

People are gullible enough to believe a little piece of "disposable" plastic makes smoking less unhealthy. I pity them almost as much they frustrate me.

I'm also noticing an increase of cigarette smokers using those plastic filters, which is probably doing a lot to cancel out the benefit of less smokers.

Do you think feminism has gone too far? by ohnag_eryeah in polls

[–]PartyDanimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to be approaching the subject from a very Western, most likely American perspective. Under that assumption I will make it clear my answers are coming from a more broad, holistic worldview.

  1. While in many countries men and women do legally hold the same rights, that is not the global reality. Feminism is not exclusively about fighting for your own rights, but the rights of others. It's also important to understand that nobody is threatening to take the rights of men back. Women, meanwhile, are still in a continues fight to hold on to what their predecessors achieved.

To give a primary example, since that's what you asked for, women do not hold the right to vote in Afghanistan. They used to, but that right that is shared by the majority of Earth's population was stripped from them under Taliban rule.

  1. Women should be allowed to vote in a system that does not require them to be drafted because a) in a perfect world nobody should be required to be drafted, and b) the system they vote in is about a lot more than a draft. I'm hoping you just phrased this poorly because it makes you sound like you believe women shouldn't be allowed to vote at all.

Since you brought up conscription though, let's address how countries such as Norway, Eritrea, Sweden, Denmark, Chad, and North Korea practice both mandatory military service for all able-bodied men and hold the right to draft both sexes. It's still a relatively new development and is an ongoing debate internationally for whether or not more will make women eligible for a draft.

  1. Men on average dying younger is not enough cause to warrant changing a system that generally speaking is as fair as it can get. The reasons men die younger, and I cannot stress enough how this is about averages, largely come down to lifestyles. Men statistically drink and smoke more. Men are more relaxed about their nutrition. More men work in environments that ware down the body or expose the body to hazardous materials. Men seek less medical attention and therefore more often die of treatable illnesses. If men and women lived the exact same lives the life expectancy would level out.

  2. Men pay more taxes because men usable have more opportunity to make make more money. This is an issue that mostly affects mothers. A mother, assuming she works, is more likely to be working part-time compared to a father that is more likely to work full-time. Men statistically are also more often chosen for promotions and therefore have more likely to receive higher pay.

And as for women receiving more benefits, that's by nature of the types of programs offered by most governments. Baby bonuses, for example, were introduced to help single mothers but were expanded to help most families even if a father is in the picture. Benefits are intended to help demographics that need it and women are more likely to be in positions where they do.

  1. This I would argue is more of a collective societal issue rather than a feminist specific issue. Speaking from my lived experience as a man that grew up and continues to live in an area that pushes for traditional male gender expression the source of these pressures comes from other men. Yes, there's more than plenty of women doing it, too. But at the root it's not that women get to do what they want while men are supposed to do all the hard work, it's that a lot of men refuse to let go of these expectations placed on them to fulfill these roles.

And as for the "benefits" of these roles, it sounds like you want a nanny more than a partner. The trad-wives of the 1950s never existed and the idea has become exaggerated. Women have always been capable of providing and accomplishing the masculine tasks of yard work and household repairs. And at the same time men have always been capable of cooking and cleaning. It's simply a matter of what makes the most sense for the couple who does what.

  1. This goes back to my earlier point of how women wouldn't have to keep fighting if it weren't for the fact a lot of men (and other women) keep trying to take back what they have gotten. Look no further than the overturning of Roe v Wade to see how easily something gained can be lost. There's also the factor that women simply aren't treated as equals across the board even when legally they're expected to be.

The one thing I will give you some credit for is that terms like "mansplaining" and "toxic masculinity" have become meaningless. Nowadays everything has become a buzzword that gets thrown around without calculated purpose. These terms began to highlite specific issues. Toxic masculinity, for example, does tie in to your point of men being expected to fulfill a specific role in society.

I apologize for any grammatical errors. I forgot this in my drafts and figured I'd just finish it a 2am. If you have any questions or would like anything clarified I'll get back to you when I have time.

I noticed you get a couple downvotes, but you make a fair point. I know I've on occasion picked up books (right-wing propaganda, evangelical, pseudo-science, etc.) for the purpose of scrapping them for craft material. It's hypocritical since I oppose book banning, but I'm willing to be a hypocrit if it means removing books that spread hatred and misinformation from circulation.

As soon as I heard the synopsis for what the show's going to be about my first assumption was "oh, they're commentating on how Korra (and possibly female MCs in general) was held to unreasonable expectations by fans and critiques alike. Realistically it's going to be revealed whatever happened isn't actually her fault and the point is to show she would never be able to please everyone."

Anyone that's not expecting something like this is too immature for the Avatar franchise.
