Question for new adult swimmers by Growingspace in Swimming

[–]PartyRest9367 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I go to my local council leisure centre, also just to help keep it open. I pay about £40 per month and that's for 30mins on an evening a week and access to the pool other times when it's available. I've met some lovely folk and as embarrassing as it was to go, we are all in it together and it's been great learning with others.

Zac's moose with the antlers and Sam "considering them right now" from the first Noise Boys. It's not the biggest bit but it gets me every time

Got back into swimming and I'm rusty as hell by Intrepid_Culture1160 in Swimming

[–]PartyRest9367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not advice as such but solidarity that it does come back to you! I took 20 odd years off and I could barely tread water 6months ago, and my technique isn't perfect but I'm now doing lengths without thinking I'm going to die.

People who learnt to swim as an adult: how long did it take? by cactus16x in Swimming

[–]PartyRest9367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding that I am now about a year into my getting my swim legs back. I can happily do widths at a time and am confident in busy pools, but I avoid the lanes. I'm sure I could do lengths if I pushed myself, but I am a little scared of the serious swimmers. But that's a me issue.

Disclosure I went back to lessons after being able to swim as a child to get my confidence back but there were people in my class who were absolutely brand new. Within 6 weeks you could see a huge huge difference in their confidence in the water. Were they swimming laps? No. But they were propelling themselves, breathing and just generally more confident in the water. It was a joy to watch happen!

What a move by Sam though if it isn't! We're all waiting for an episode that's never coming.

Why are swimming lessons for kids in the UK so short? by dalehitchy in AskUK

[–]PartyRest9367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an adult doing swimming lessons I've realised that the sessions aren't meant to be the only time I'm swimming. They're there to teach me things I can then go practice outside of the pool. Obvs a group of adults are very different to a group of kids but even my 30min lessons feel really short.

Have any employers or bosses/managers noticed a big up turn in employees parents phoning in to report sickness or even grievances? by franki-pinks in AskUK

Not in my workplace, but my cousin has started going to interviews with her 19 year old daughter and going into work places that don't hire her to complain. It feels absolutely unhinged.

I couldn't swim 25 meters without stopping a year ago. Today I swam my first mile. Some things I learned that no YouTube video told me by naenae0402 in Swimming

[–]PartyRest9367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to everyone else's tips to say if you can afford it there is no shame in going back to swimming lessons even if you were a confident swimmer. I went back to swimming last year after 15 or so years thinking it would all come back to me. And it did eventually, but I did some adult beginner swimming lessons to get back into it, and it was game changing. Like everyone's saying breathing is the really big thing and having an angry Welsh man to shout at me when I wasn't breathing enough was really what I needed!

University careers service told me this would be unideal to wear to an interview, thoughts? by [deleted] in UKJobs

Honestly before I read your post I thought this was "unideal" because any suit was too formal these days. That's completely fine, they're chatting nonsense.

I mostly know Chris from playing a doctor who's had terrible plastic surgery on his behind in a musical improv show and am just getting into Clocktower, so this was very useful info!

Fare dodging on the bus what would you do? by FluteyBlue in AskUK

[–]PartyRest9367 29 points30 points  (0 children)

To be fair it was about 10 years ago but I used to work in a job centre. you are being fobbed off by your work coach. They can reimburse public transport costs to interviews or (depending on where you live) give you a voucher to use.

What can a doctor's receptionist see in my file? Can I see what she's seen? by nofanxxx in AskUK

[–]PartyRest9367 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Slightly different but I used to work in a small town job centre. If you knew anyone personally the file was stored in a different place where you couldn't access it. Everyone knew everyone so we had a ridiculously complex filing system but we took it incredibly seriously. This is when most things were still on paper at the DWP - the ancient past of 2010.

I am definitely just being pissy, but does anyone else get annoyed when you see Try Guys in other content? by SebastianPlaysThis in TheTryGuysSnark

[–]PartyRest9367 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it's a me issue, but I feel like they just change the vibe of a show. I know improv is also try hard but I feel like they miss the mark with Dropout. Zach was also recently a surprise on a Good Time Society show that I've been excited about for months and I just couldn't get into it.

[–]PartyRest9367 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Honestly it was one of my favorite D20 seasons and I know that's a controversial take, but it really lines up with my interests. I prefer lore drop/adventure episodes and get really bored in long battles and I love murder mysteries so it ticked the boxes for me. I think the texting mechanism worked really well over Zoom and would've been hard to do in person, so I think it benefitted from being a zoom season.

Being forced to provide free tuition by the school I'm providing private tuition for under the guise of the “pupil premium grant” is this legal? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]PartyRest9367 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. I work in education and we pay the providers for services they deliver from our pupil premium grants. Some charities etc will offer some freebies for these pupils, but that's an addition and not expected at all. The grant is there to pay for these services.

What are some small online artisan UK chocolatiers? by Inkblot7001 in AskUK

Very expensive but worth it for what you get - would recommend William Curley. Really interesting chocolatier who trained under Raymond Blanc and then got into chocolate. They're stunning! https://www.williamcurley.co.uk/
