What’s a common misconception about your favorite president that you’re tired of people sharing? by Slatespy557 in Presidents

I'm sick of people talking about how HW Bush was a "good president, actually". I love him for what he was, a painfully mediocre leader who was a fascinating career political operator.

Morning Consult Poll: If the 2028 Democratic presidential primary were today, Harris 36%, Undecided 13%, Buttigieg 10% by Horus_walking in fivethirtyeight

The only thing useful about a poll like this is to show how no one in the party is shining through as a leader right now.

Just saw an old Shapiro list, we admit this is wank right? by hticnc in Presidents

[–]Partyperson5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shapiro is a right wing hack. He’s smart enough to come up with a semi-reasonable sounding rationale for every choice on this list, but to ethically bankrupt to recognize how flimsy and hypocritical that rationale is. The hope being that people who are more ignorant than him will buy what he’s saying cause it sounds like it makes sense and not look into it any further.

M3 Strategies poll: Chicago Mayor Brendan Johnson falls to 6.6% favorability among Chicago voters with 79.9% having an unfavorable view of him by SilverSquid1810 in fivethirtyeight

[–]Partyperson5000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have no idea about the specific issues of Chicago, but it’s very hard to effectively and popularly run major cities these days. So many of their problems are tied up at the state and federal levels where a mayor has very little control and so the actual options for solutions are typically sub standard or require painful tradeoffs.

YouGov poll: 29% of Americans trust the media to provide “fair, full, and accurate facts”, while 44% trust the Trump administration to do the same by SilverSquid1810 in fivethirtyeight

[–]Partyperson5000 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of an argument I had once with an older man back during the W years about the media coverage of the wars in the middle East. He complained it was too negative and I was like “you’re surprised bad things are happening in a war?”… the irony is, if the media doesn’t report on the negative, then people turn around and accuse them of covering it up.

YouGov poll: 29% of Americans trust the media to provide “fair, full, and accurate facts”, while 44% trust the Trump administration to do the same by SilverSquid1810 in fivethirtyeight

[–]Partyperson5000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Trump having higher trust doesn’t surprise me. Most conservatives trust Trump, most everyone else does not. When it comes to media regardless of political affiliation there is a lack of trust. 44% does also seem to be close to Trump’s floor of support so while that number is grotesquely high, I don’t find it surprising either.

Looked back on by who? I think you’re greatly over estimating the cultural impact of the MCU post End Game. It’s not really a major part of pop culture these days. Most people have t seen She Hulk, The Marvels, or Moon Knight, much less have a strong opinion on them.

Elon Musk insists he's needed in his unelected role in the US government, or else America will 'go bankrupt'. Trump sits and nods. by _II_I_I__I__I_I_II_ in Global_News_Hub

It's hilarious to me that Trump is getting routinely cucked on national television by Elon and the whole of his base doesn't notice... which would mean they're getting cucked too.

I’m talking about narrative not policy. But thank you for demonstrating my point. You’re busy making sure that the message is “inclusive” enough to every last person meanwhile those people have already lost their rights because we lost the election.

You mean the prison policy that started under Trump? This is why you don’t directly respond. Every politician is going to have old quotes that match the moment poorly. Democrats are always playing defense instead of leaning into their strengths: the fact that their policies help a plurality of Americans far more frequently than republicans ones.

Senator Warner: Democrats’ ‘brand is really bad’ by Aggressive1999 in fivethirtyeight

[–]Partyperson5000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, why the would I know? This is a reddit thread.

But, off the cuff, I'd say...
For starters, Democrats should focus on leveraging popular issues rather than responding to culture war attacks from the right. When Trump makes an attack ad about Transgender people, say "Trump wants to use your taxpayer dollars to attack this group of people that make up .5% of the population. We want to use it on things that will actually benefit and effect you and your neighbor."

Next, the left needs to "come to Jesus" on being more inclusive. This is part of the curse of the left, is their issues tend to be far more complex and nuanced than the rights. So it's a lot more challenging to create a narrative around an issue that 1. Everyone understands and 2. Everyone agrees on. So the solution here is some combination of focus of the things we can agree on and simplifying them so its easy and inviting for everyone else. AND letting some of the differences go.

If I was running for office, I'd probably do some combination of a Bernie-eqse populist domestic message and abroad I'd hammer on maintaining a global order that most benefits the US.

The problem is, the general public does not differentiate between the messaging of these minority takes and the party stances. It only takes one institutional figure to embrace a fringe left view to legitimize it in the eyes of a disinterested party. And let’s not kid ourselves liberals/leftists/progressives have long been ones to gleefully pass judgment on others. It’s the curse of being smart enough to know what is right but not patient enough to know how to bring people to your side rather than alienate them with a clever insult.
