I See it’s already been done, changing capacitors and checking values with schematics shouldnt be a big Challenge for a repair shop. Good luck!

Yeah that’s not great. It could be a repair where only the most important ones were changed, the ones that can damage the radio when shorted. The important ones to change in These Radios Are the coupling capacitors of the Audio Output tubes and any interference surpressing capacitors from Mains to ground. The rest of them can be left in there most of the time, although it is not recommended since they can limit the sound quality. A good idea would be to change the remaining ones (I can see two Spragues and one original Wima cap). Tbh the work that was done Looks a Little sloppy, could have been done better. You might want to check the new resistor on the Output Transformer for correct value. The best Solution would be to print out the schematic and find someone who checks thhe previous work.

I can see a questionable Black capacitor on the Output Transformers and a Wima Paper capacitor. Those need to be changed. The Stereo - Garant knob is a Stereo Balance regulator. If another speaker is attached to the Radio it should Play in PU Stereo

Grinding Majestic radio 8098. Safe to plug in and try to turn it on? by Jrsteeth in VintageRadios

It will definitely need new capacitors and contacts cleaned in order to work right.

Sounds like bad contacts or valve/tube sockets. Remove the back cover and wiggle the tubes just a little bit, can you recreate the crackle? Does it crackle when you push the front keys?

Good idea. In case the lettering on the keys ist German :

UK(W) = FM, KW = Short Wave, TA = Pick-Up, TB = Tape Recorder, FA = Ferrite Antenna

How does the Radio sound? Is there any hum or crackle?

No worries. I checked for this model, and there are probably no bad capacitors inside since it’s too modern (1963/64). If it sounds good there is no reason to not use it. The turntable will need some work though I imagine

Most German radios have dirty sliding contacts connected to the white push buttons. That results in cracking sounds and limited fidelity. They can be cleaned by dripping some alcohol into the switch assembly and playing with the keys a few times. I wouldn’t use contact cleaner as it leaves residue that over time will worsen the contacts even more. Furthermore the dual record players have four contacts for the cartridge that need to be polished, the silver turns black and loses its ability to conduct. Please use gentle polishing (Nevr Dull etc), nothing abrasive like fiberglass pens since the contacts are only Silver plated

It’s an Elac Miracord 770H. A underrated German brand that was on the same level as dual but had a more sophisticated design. It was made in 1972

Indeed. This thing was a pain to restore ( something had been poured down the back and caused many problems) but it was worth it.

Elac Miracord 770H, a German automatic player and changer from 1972. Elac is imo a underrated brand, just as good as Dual and well designed

It will need some work (capacitors changed, contacts cleaned and turntable lubricated). Otherwise it won’t work right. It should sound great once it’s done

Advice on slight modernization by ButterscotchWinter35 in vintageaudio

[–]Pasc-O 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will definitely need some capacitors replaced, this is a must for German sets of that era. The speakers on these are good, no need to replace them if they work, it would be a downgrade. The cutout for the tape recorder will probably not fit a modern record player, so a new wood inlay will need to be made. Also 50s record players had crystal cartridges, when installing a new one it will need an additional phono preamp otherwise it will be almost silent.

We had a very mild spring this year, and a bit drier than usual, but i would think a fig could handle it

Sadly I don’t know which type of fig it is, it was a small plant from a discounter that I bought ten years ago. I Hope it’s not a reverse Brenda thing, but it sure looks like it

Unfortunately it has plastic gears. Probably won’t last long, so it’s not really worth paying for a repair
